Compartment doors: hinge landings, gas struts, latch geometry and master lock rods
The most common call we get on a service body has nothing to do with a collision. It is a compartment door that will not latch. Owners try a new latch, then a new striker, then a shim behind it, and the door still will not close. The reason is almost always that the door has dropped, which means the hinge mounting has moved, or the opening has lost square because the body flexed on loose mounting or took a knock at the corner.
So the sequence is opening geometry first and hardware second. We measure the opening diagonally to find out whether it is square, straighten or rebuild the frame where it is not, and only then address the hinge. Hinges on service bodies frequently fail because somebody mounted them into thin door skin or a frame flange rather than into the door post. The fasteners wallow their holes, the hinge sags, and no amount of latch adjustment recovers it. We rebuild the landing in sound material with backing that spreads load, then hang and set the door.
Gas struts and master lock rods finish the job. Strut mounting studs pull through door frames the same way hinges do, and the answer there is backing rather than a larger fastener. Master lock rod linkage bends when a door is forced against a stuck latch, and after that one turn of the key no longer throws every latch on that side. We straighten or replace rod sections, reset the bell cranks and clevises to the corrected door positions, and cycle every door through its full travel before anything goes to paint.

Compartment floors, shelving and what a wet parts bin does to a service body
Compartment floors rot from the top down and they do it out of sight. A battery box that vented, a bin that held wet fittings, a compartment that carried a leaking jug of coolant: the liquid sits on the floor pan, works under whatever liner is there, and by the time the technician notices a soft spot the pan is gone and the corrosion has already moved into the compartment sides and the divider.
We pull the compartment down, cut the failed pan back to sound material, let in new floor with the seams sealed, and treat and coat the inside of the compartment rather than just the outside of the body. Where corrosion has reached a compartment side or the vertical divider between two compartments, that material gets let in as well. It is worth doing properly once. A rubber liner laid over a rusted pan hides the problem and adds another year of trapped moisture on top of it.
Shelving and divider structure is a separate conversation, and it is often the reason the floor failed early. Shelves sized for hand tools end up loaded with impact wrenches, fittings and cases. They deflect, and the deflection loads the shelf standards, which then tear out of the compartment side. We rebuild shelf structure to what the truck actually carries, tie standards into compartment framing rather than into thin sheet, and fabricate dividers, drawers and tool holders in shop when a crew changes what they run.
The crossmember set under a service body and the mounting that holds it square
A service body is heavy, it is loaded high, and it sits on a set of crossmembers or a subframe spreading that load across the chassis rails. When the mounting works loose, the whole body starts to move relative to the rails, and everything that depends on the body being square starts to complain. That is when compartment doors that were fine last year suddenly stop latching, and when the tailgate stops meeting the rear apron the way it used to.
The tells are consistent. Rub marks in the frame rail paint. Elongated bolt holes at the mounting brackets. A body that rocks visibly at the rear when the truck turns. A gap under the body at one corner that is not there at the others. We pull the mounting apart, inspect the crossmember set for cracking, sag and corrosion, repair or replace members, refit brackets to a straight rail, shim the body square and retorque to specification.
The single most damaging thing we find under a service body is drilling through the frame rail flange. Somebody needed a bolt somewhere and put it through the flange, which is the part of the rail loaded hardest in bending, and cracks propagate out from that hole. We weld it closed with correct preparation, add a doubler where the section allows, and relocate the mounting to the rail web where it belongs. On a truck carrying a crane or a compressor, that detail is not optional.

Ladder racks, pipe racks and crane mounting put into structure, not into door frames
Racks are where good service bodies get ruined by well meaning installers. A ladder rack or a pipe rack loads the body in ways it was never designed for. A long pipe overhanging the back acts as a lever, and a ladder catching wind at highway speed pumps the mounting thousands of times a day. When the rack is bolted to the top rail of a door frame, the door frame is what fails, and then the door stops closing and the owner blames the door.
We mount racks into the body posts and the compartment framing, with backing plates spreading load across more than one member, and we tie the rear leg into structure rather than into a rear apron panel. Where a rack has already torn a door frame, the frame gets rebuilt before new mounting goes in, because a repaired frame with the same bad mounting fails again in the same place. Rack fabrication happens in shop, sized to what the crew actually carries rather than to a catalog drawing.
Crane and compressor mounting plates are a larger version of the same principle. The plate transfers a moment into the body and then into the chassis, so cracks show at the weld toe and at the plate corners. We cut out cracked material, rebuild with correctly specified plate, prepare and weld into structure with gussets that end on a taper, and coat before assembly. The crane itself, its winch, its hydraulics and the compressor internals stay with your equipment service provider. We do the plate, the structure and the finish.

Aluminum against steel: how each service body ages, plus DOT tape and department graphics
Steel and aluminum service bodies age completely differently, and knowing which one you have changes the repair plan before the estimate is written. Steel bodies corrode from the seams and from the compartment floors, and the answer there is cut out, let in, seal and coat. Aluminum bodies do not rust, but they corrode galvanically wherever steel hardware, steel mounting or the chassis contacts them without isolation, and they crack at fastener holes and square corners because aluminum does not have the fatigue behavior steel effectively does.
On an aluminum body we repair with matched alloy and the correct filler, isolate dissimilar metals at every joint, and radius the corners of any let in rather than leaving them square. On a steel body we cut corrosion out rather than filling over it, prime bare metal with epoxy before filler goes anywhere near it, and reseal the seams that let water in to begin with. Both get finished with a coating chosen for a truck that lives at a jobsite rather than in a driveway.
The last layer is identity and markings. DOT conspicuity tape, department names, unit numbers, placards and contractor lettering all come off during a repair and all have to go back where they were. We photograph and measure before disassembly and reinstall to those measurements after the coating has cured. And the scope line, stated plainly: no engine, drivetrain, transmission or heavy truck brake work, no DOT inspections, no hydraulic pump, cylinder, valve or PTO service. Two compartment doors on my service body stopped latching. Is that a hardware problem?
Almost never. A door that stops latching has usually dropped because the hinge mounting tore out of thin material, or the opening lost square after the body flexed on loose mounting. We measure the opening diagonally first, rebuild the frame where it needs it, then rebuild the hinge landing into the door post with backing that spreads load. Latch and striker adjustment comes last, and it holds once the geometry underneath it is right.
The floor of one compartment is soft and rusted through. Can that be fixed without a new body?
Yes. We cut the failed pan back to sound material, let in new floor, seal the seams and coat the inside of the compartment, not only the outside of the body. If the corrosion has reached a compartment side or the divider between two compartments, that material gets let in as well. Laying a liner over a rusted pan is what most people do, and it traps moisture against the remaining metal so the compartment is worse a year later.
My ladder rack tore the top out of a door frame. Where should it have been mounted?
Into the body posts and the compartment framing, with backing plates spreading the load across more than one member, and with the rear leg tied into structure rather than a rear apron panel. A door frame is a light section whose job is holding a door square. It was never meant to carry a lever load from a pipe overhanging the back. We rebuild the frame first, then install mounting that puts the load where the body can actually carry it.
Is an aluminum service body harder to repair than a steel one?
Different rather than harder. Aluminum does not rust, but it corrodes galvanically wherever steel hardware or steel mounting touches it without isolation, and it cracks at fastener holes and square corners. We repair with matched alloy and correct filler, isolate every dissimilar metal joint, and radius the corners of any let in section. Steel bodies get corrosion cut out rather than filled, epoxy primer on bare metal before filler, and the seams that admitted the water resealed.
Can you build custom drawers and racks while the truck is already in for repair?
Yes, and it is the efficient time to do it, since the body is apart and heading through paint anyway. We measure on your truck, draw what you want, agree dimensions and material, then fabricate in steel or aluminum, coat it and install it into framing rather than into sheet.
