Cabover bunk delamination and what causes it
The cabover on a Class C is a laminated box hanging out over the cab with a large window in its front face and very little supporting structure beneath it. It is exposed to more sun than any other vertical surface on the coach because it faces forward, and it is exposed to more water because the roof to cabover transition, the window frame and the marker light penetrations all live within a few feet of each other.
Delamination there usually starts at the window frame. Butyl tape behind a Kinro or Hehr frame dries out, shrinks, and stops sealing at the top corners. Water enters the wall cavity, wicks into the luan or the foam core, and the adhesive bond between skin and core releases. You see it as a shallow wave in the fiberglass above or beside the window, and it becomes obvious on a hot afternoon when trapped moisture expands.
The second cause is structural. A cabover flexes as the coach drives, and on many builds the front face is bonded to a light frame with no midspan support. Years of that flex plus a window opening cut through the middle equals a laminate that eventually lets go on its own, even without a leak. That version shows up as a symmetrical wave on both sides of the window rather than a single wet corner.
Repair means finding out which one you have. A dry, contained delamination can be injected and vacuum clamped. A wet core has to be opened, dried or replaced, and reskinned. Either way, the window comes out, the frame flange gets rebuilt if it has softened, and it goes back on fresh butyl with the fastener pattern into sound material.
The cab to house joint on an E450 cutaway
A Ford E450 cutaway arrives at the RV plant as a cab, a frame and nothing behind the B pillar. The manufacturer builds the house on the frame and then joins it to the back of the cab. That joint has to be watertight and it has to flex forever, because the cab is bolted to the frame at its own mounts and the house is bolted to outriggers at different points. They do not move together.
The joint is typically a combination of a metal or fiberglass transition trim, a bead of sealant and an interior finish panel. It sits directly above the driver and passenger seats and directly behind the cab roof, which is why a failure there shows up as water on the driver seat or a wet headliner corner. Owners often blame the windshield first. It is usually the joint.
Doing this repair properly means removing the transition trim entirely rather than caulking over it, cleaning both mating surfaces, correcting any corrosion on the cab side and any laminate softness on the house side, and rebedding on new material with fasteners that land in structure. Where a previous repair has piled sealant on top of sealant, all of it comes off. Layered sealant does not bond to itself and it hides the actual gap.
This joint is also where cab to house wiring, plumbing and duct pass throughs are routed. When we have it open, those get inspected and resealed too, because a grommet that has hardened around a wiring bundle is a leak path that no amount of exterior sealant will stop.

Rear cap cracking at the ladder and the rear corner
The rear cap on a Class C carries a ladder, often a spare tire, sometimes a bike rack, and on many models a rear mounted receiver. All of those loads land on a molded fiberglass panel with a laminated wall behind it, and all of them bounce every time the coach hits a pavement joint. The mounting points are usually four to six screws through the cap into a backing block that may or may not still be sound.
The failure pattern is a crack starting at a mounting hole and running outward, or a spider pattern around a mount that has begun to move. Once the mount moves, the sealant around the fasteners fails, water gets into the wall, the backing block softens, and the mount moves more. It is a loop that accelerates.
We fix it by getting behind the panel. The ladder comes off, the backing gets replaced with material sized for the load, the cracks get ground out and laminated, and the mount is reset with proper hardware and fresh sealant. Where the backing is inaccessible from inside a finished wall, we build access, repair, and close it in a way the interior finish can hide.
Rear cap corner damage from backing into something is the other common job on this vehicle. Class C rear corners are a compound curve, which means they cannot be pushed back out. They get sectioned or relaminated and refinished, and the rear cap to sidewall seam gets rebuilt at the same time, because an impact that deformed a corner almost always opened that seam a few inches even if it does not look damaged.
Water damage that shows up at the entry step
The most common water symptom we see on a Class C is a floor that flexes near the entry step. Owners assume the leak is at the door. It usually is not. Water entering at the roof to sidewall seam, at the awning rail, or at a cabover corner travels down the inside of the sidewall cavity, and the entry step is where the floor is lowest and where the sidewall meets a large cut opening.
By the time the floor gives, the damage is a stack: wet floor decking, a softened sill under the door frame, and often a rotted lower sidewall section behind the interior panel. Repairing only the floor leaves the sill and the wall to keep feeding the same area.
Our sequence is fixed. Find and correct the entry point first, with sectional water testing and moisture readings rather than assumptions. Open the interior to sound material. Replace the decking, the sill and any compromised framing. Rebuild the sidewall laminate if the core is gone. Then reset the door in a square opening and seal it. Then the interior finish.

Roof work on a Class C and what it actually involves
Most Class C roofs are EPDM or TPO membrane over a plywood or laminated deck, with a molded cap at each end. The membrane itself rarely fails in the field. What fails is everything that pierces it: the vent flanges, the fan housings, the AC gasket, the refrigerator vent, the antenna base, the solar feet and the front and rear cap seams.
A recoat and reseal is the right repair when the membrane is intact and the deck is dry. That means cleaning the entire roof properly, removing loose lap sealant rather than covering it, rebedding fixtures that have moved, and laying new sealant that bonds to a clean surface. Applying a coating over failed sealant and dirt looks good for a week and peels in sheets by the end of summer.
Membrane replacement is a different job. It is warranted when the membrane has been punctured or torn, when it has been coated so many times that nothing will bond, or when the deck underneath has gone soft. Deck condition is the deciding factor. If a roof feels spongy anywhere when walked, the membrane is not the problem, the plywood is, and the roof has to come apart to fix it.
Class C roofs are narrow enough that walking them is genuinely damaging on older coaches. If you have been up there and felt the roof move under you, tell the estimator that, because it changes the scope from a reseal to a deck repair and it is better to know at the estimate than after teardown.

What causes the wave in the fiberglass over my windshield?
That is cabover delamination, and it is usually fed by the cabover window frame. Butyl tape behind a Kinro or Hehr frame dries out and shrinks at the top corners, water gets into the wall core, and the bond between skin and core releases. It looks worse on a hot day because trapped moisture expands. We pull the window, determine whether the core is wet or just unbonded, and either inject and vacuum clamp or open, recore and reskin.
Water shows up on my driver seat when it rains. Is it the windshield?
Usually it is the cab to house joint, not the glass. On an E450 cutaway the cab and the house are bolted to the frame at different points and do not move together, so the joint above and behind the cab roof works constantly and the sealant eventually releases. We remove the transition trim rather than caulking over it, clean and correct both mating surfaces, and rebed on fresh material with fasteners landing in structure.
My ladder feels loose and there are cracks around the mounts. Can that be fixed?
Yes, and it needs to be, because a moving mount opens the sealant and lets water into the wall, which softens the backing block, which lets the mount move more. We take the ladder off, replace the backing with material sized for the load, grind out and laminate the cracks properly, then reset the mount with correct hardware and fresh sealant. Building access from inside is sometimes part of it on a finished wall.
How do I know if my Class C roof needs a reseal or a new membrane?
Walk it carefully and feel for movement, and look at the sealant beads. If the membrane is intact, the deck is firm and the failure is at fixture flanges and cap seams, a proper reseal is the right money. If the roof feels spongy anywhere, has been coated repeatedly so nothing bonds, or has punctures, then it is a membrane and deck job. We check moisture from inside as well, because a firm feeling roof can still have a wet deck.
