Frequently Asked Questions for West Covina Owners

Short answer. 41 answers covering how estimates work, what an insurance claim actually looks like here, how long jobs take, what is in scope and what is not, and what to expect on the drive out from West Covina.

Set 01

Getting started

What is the very first thing I should do after damage happens

Photograph everything before anything moves, including wide shots that show position and close shots that show the damage itself. If another party was involved, get their insurance information and a police report number. Then call your carrier and open a claim, and call us at (949) 799-3387. Do not authorize any repair anywhere until the damage has been documented, because once a panel is disturbed the evidence of what happened is gone.

Do I need to open an insurance claim before contacting the shop

No, and there are cases where you should not. If the damage is small enough that the repair may land near or under your deductible, it is worth getting a written estimate first so you can decide whether filing is worth it. Bring the vehicle in, get the document, then decide. If you have already opened a claim, bring the claim number and the adjuster contact information with you.

My RV is not drivable. How do I get it to Yorba Linda

Call (949) 799-3387 and tell us the vehicle type, length and what specifically prevents it from moving. We do not offer roadside or mobile service, so the unit has to reach the facility, but we can point you toward transport operators who move oversized recreational and commercial vehicles and we will stage the arrival so the unit is not sitting on the street. Many policies include towing coverage worth checking first.

What information should I have ready when I call

Year, make, model and length. Vehicle type, whether that is a Class A, fifth wheel, box truck or van conversion. What happened and roughly when. Whether the unit is drivable. Whether there is an insurance claim and, if so, the carrier and claim number. If it is a systems problem, describe the symptom and whether it is constant or intermittent. That call takes five minutes and saves an hour at intake.

Can I send photos instead of driving out from West Covina first

Photos help us tell you whether the job is in our scope and roughly what category of repair you are looking at. They cannot produce a written estimate. On laminated construction especially, what a photo shows and what a tap test and moisture meter show are very different things. Email photos to info@ocrvcenter.com for an initial conversation, then plan on bringing the vehicle in for the actual document.

Is there a wait to get in for an estimate

Usually not long. Estimating capacity is separate from repair bay capacity, so you can generally get a written estimate well before a repair slot opens. Call ahead so we can put you with an estimator rather than having you wait on the lot. Repair scheduling depends on shop load and, more often, on parts lead times for your specific model.

Should I clean the vehicle before bringing it in

A rinse helps, particularly on a body that has been sitting, because dirt hides cracks and hairline damage. Do not wax, polish or apply anything to the damaged area. Do not attempt a temporary sealant repair over a leak you want us to find, because covering an entry point makes it substantially harder to trace. Leave the interior accessible where the damage is, so panels can be checked.

What if I already had another shop start the repair

Bring it in and bring whatever paperwork you have. A large share of our work is repairs someone else started, abandoned or performed poorly. We will assess honestly what is salvageable and what has to be undone, and we will document the condition on arrival so there is a clear record of what we inherited. That documentation matters if there is any dispute with the prior facility.

Set 02

Pricing and estimates

What are your posted labor rates

Body and paint labor is $210 per hour. Mechanical and electrical is $260 per hour. Diagnostics, scan and programming is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorized repair. Detail is $95 per hour. Those are posted rates that apply to every customer. Insurance billed jobs may be billed at carrier negotiated rates that differ from the posted retail figures, which is normal industry practice.

Why is there a charge for a systems estimate but not a collision estimate

Because they are different work. A collision estimate is a visual and photographic assessment of impact damage, and we write those at the shop at no charge with insurance walk ins welcome. A systems estimate means operating equipment, taking readings and reproducing faults, which is diagnostic labor. Those run $150 and are credited back against an authorized repair, so if you proceed the charge disappears into the job.

How do you calculate materials on an estimate

Paint supplies bill at $55 per paint hour. Body supplies bill at $5 per body hour. A $45 hazmat and disposal charge applies whenever chemicals, refrigerant or LP are involved. Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials, and labor is not taxed. Those formulas are posted and applied identically on every job, so you can check the arithmetic on your own estimate.

What is your parts markup

Parts priced at $100 or less carry 100 percent markup. Parts priced over $100 carry 35 percent markup. Special order parts require a full non refundable deposit at the time of order, because a molded cap, a specific cabinet door profile or a model specific panel has no resale market if you change your mind. All of that is posted rather than negotiated per customer.

Why is your estimate higher than the one I got somewhere else

Almost always because of operations rather than rates. Compare the two documents line by line. The usual differences are structural measurement, corrosion protection at opened seams, proper seam sealing, adequate blend panels, and removing failed core behind a damaged area rather than filling over it. Those omissions do not show for a year or two, which is exactly why they are the easiest lines to leave off a cheaper estimate.

What deposits do you require

50 percent at authorization on any job over $2,000. An additional 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000. The balance is due at pickup, and no vehicle leaves the property until it is paid in full. Special order parts are paid in full at order. A 3.5 percent surcharge applies to credit card payments over $1,000, which is a pass through of merchant fees on high ticket work.

Are the price ranges on this site what I will actually pay

No. They are planning figures meant to tell you whether a job is a four figure problem or a five figure one. Actual cost depends on your vehicle size, construction type, extent of hidden damage, parts availability and whether a supplement is needed. Final numbers come from a written estimate on your specific vehicle, and we would rather you plan from a realistic band than from an optimistic single number.

Can I supply my own parts

In some cases, and we will tell you when it makes sense. Customer supplied parts change the arrangement, because we cannot control sourcing, fitment or condition, and a part that arrives wrong stalls your vehicle in a bay. On insurance work the carrier generally will not reimburse customer supplied parts. On planned projects with an owner sourced item it is more workable, discussed case by case.

Insurance claims

Which insurance companies do you bill directly

Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, AAA SoCal, AAA Enterprises, Mercury, Allstate, American Family, Wawanesa, National General, CSAA, Foremost, Liberty Mutual, Tesla, Cincinnati and AGWS. Carrier names are listed to show claim experience. OCRV Center is an independent shop and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting as an agent of any insurer. If your carrier is not on that list we can still work the claim, it simply may not settle through a direct billing arrangement.

Does my adjuster need to inspect the RV before I bring it in

No. Most RV claims are handled at a desk rather than by a field adjuster, which means the file moves on documentation. Bring the vehicle in, we write the estimate and build a photo package, and that goes to the carrier. If the adjuster does want to inspect, they can do it here. That is usually faster than trying to coordinate an inspection at a storage lot in West Covina.

What is a supplement and why does my claim need one

A supplement is an addition to an approved estimate covering damage found after work begins. Laminated RV bodies conceal damage: the visible crease is the smallest part, and core separation, wet framing or a displaced crossmember only become visible once the skin is opened. We submit supplements with photographs, moisture readings and part numbers before proceeding, so you are never billed for work the carrier has not approved.

Can my insurance company make me use their preferred shop

No. In California you select your repair facility. A carrier may recommend a direct repair program shop and may explain why it prefers one, but it cannot require it. Tell your adjuster the vehicle is going to OCRV Center in Yorba Linda and give them our phone number. If you feel you are being pressured, that is worth documenting, and the California Department of Insurance handles complaints on the subject.

What is betterment and can I avoid paying it

Betterment is a deduction some carriers apply when a worn component is replaced with a new one, on the theory that you gained life you did not previously have. It shows up most often on roof membranes, awning fabric and tires. It is negotiable with documentation of the actual pre loss condition, which is one reason we photograph and record component condition at intake rather than after teardown.

The carrier approved less than your estimate. What happens now

We reconcile it before any work starts. That means sending the adjuster the specific documentation supporting the disputed lines: photographs at scale, measurements, manufacturer procedures and part numbers. Most disagreements on RV claims come from a general estimating system that has no proper entry for laminated sidewall repair or cap bonding, so the fix is usually explanation rather than argument. You are kept in the loop throughout.

Do I pay the deductible to you or to the insurance company

To us, at pickup, along with any owner elected upgrades that fall outside the claim. On a direct billed job the carrier pays the shop for the covered repair, so you are not fronting the full amount and waiting for reimbursement. We keep claim work and owner elected work on clearly separate lines so there is never confusion about what the carrier paid for and what you did.

What happens if the claim is denied

The written estimate remains valid and the repair becomes customer pay, which you can proceed with, defer or decline. We will also tell you plainly if we think the denial reason is worth challenging. Denials on RV claims frequently rest on a wear and tear characterization of damage that actually had a specific triggering event, and photographic documentation is what changes that conversation.

Can you help with a total loss valuation dispute

We can supply the documentation that makes a dispute possible: a detailed repair estimate, teardown photographs and a written condition assessment. Request the carrier valuation worksheet and the comparables behind it, because RV comparables are frequently drawn from listings that do not match your floor plan, mileage or options. Most policies also contain an appraisal clause for resolving valuation disagreements without litigation.

Set 04

Scope of work

What repairs do you actually perform in house

Collision and structural work, frame straightening and fabrication, fiberglass and composite repair including delamination and cap replacement, aluminum skin work, paint and refinish, roof membrane and sealing, slide mechanisms and seals, awnings, interior including subfloor, flooring, cabinetry and upholstery, plumbing and tanks, LP and appliances, 12 volt and 120 volt electrical including inverters, converters and solar, generator service, and commercial equipment installation.

Do you work on RV engines or transmissions

No. Chassis mechanical work on a motorhome belongs with the chassis manufacturer service network, whether that is Ford, Freightliner, Spartan or Mercedes. We cover house systems: electrical, generator, LP, furnace, water heater, refrigeration, plumbing, tanks, leveling and slide mechanisms. Being clear about that boundary saves you a wasted drive out from West Covina and saves us from subletting work we cannot stand behind.

Will you do a cosmetic repair if I do not want the structural work

Not when the cosmetic work would cover a live structural or water intrusion problem. Filling and painting over failed core produces a repair that looks correct for a season and then returns worse, and putting sealant over an open seam traps water in a wall cavity. We will explain exactly what we are declining and why. If the underlying issue is addressed, cosmetic scope choices are yours.

Can you fabricate parts that are no longer available

Frequently, yes. That capability is what keeps older units repairable. We fabricate crossmembers, brackets, mounting reinforcements, custom bumpers and racks, and the cabinet shop can match a door or drawer profile that has not been produced in a decade. Fabrication is quoted as labor and material rather than as a part, and we tell you up front when fabrication is the realistic path.

Do you handle roof replacements or only repairs

Both. A recoat and reseal is appropriate when the membrane itself is sound and the sealant beads have failed. Full membrane replacement in EPDM, TPO or fiberglass is appropriate when the membrane has been compromised, when decking underneath has softened, or when prior repairs have layered incompatible materials. We survey the roof and log moisture readings before recommending one over the other.

Can you do a full interior renovation

Yes, from flooring and subfloor through cabinetry, countertops, wall panels, headliners, upholstery and furniture. Interior work benefits enormously from being done as one project rather than piecemeal, because so much of it is sequential access. Doing a floor now and cabinets in two years means removing and reinstalling the same components twice, and it usually means the finished result never quite matches.

Do you install solar, lithium and inverter systems

Yes. Roof mounted rigid and flexible panels, MPPT controllers, lithium and AGM house banks, inverter chargers from Magnum, Xantrex and Victron, transfer switches and distribution work. These are designed as systems rather than assembled from parts, because panel array voltage, controller capacity, bank chemistry and inverter draw all have to agree. We size the system to how you actually use the vehicle.

Is paint correction and detail something you offer

Yes. Full interior and exterior detail, multi stage paint correction, heavy oxidation removal and gelcoat buffing, headlight restoration and ceramic coating. Detail labor bills at $95 per hour. Order matters on these: correction happens before coating, and decal work is planned around correction. Doing them out of sequence wastes money, which is one reason we group them into a bundled exterior package.

Set 05

Timelines and process

What usually causes delays on an RV repair

Parts, by a wide margin. RV parts supply is genuinely unreliable, particularly for discontinued models and for molded caps and panels that are made to order. Six week lead times on a cap are routine. The second cause is carrier approval time on a supplement, which is outside our control although documentation quality strongly affects it. Shop capacity is a distant third.

How quickly can you start once I authorize

It depends on whether teardown is the gating step. On collision work where parts cannot be ordered until we see behind the panel, the vehicle goes in quickly because teardown has to happen first. On planned work such as a repaint or an interior project, we usually schedule a start once materials are in hand rather than holding your vehicle here waiting on a shipment.

Can you rush a job if I have a trip planned

Sometimes on scope, never on cure times. Composite bonding, sealant curing and refinish flash and cure schedules are chemistry, and compressing them produces a repair that fails. What we can sometimes do is stage the work so the vehicle is safe and usable for your trip and complete the remainder afterward. Tell us your date at intake so we can plan around it honestly.

How long does a typical slide seal job take

A straightforward seal set replacement on one room usually runs a few days once the vehicle is in a bay, because the room has to be operated, supported and accessed regardless of how many seals are involved. It stretches significantly if we find that a compressed seal has already been leaking, since at that point the slide floor or the wall cavity below has taken water and becomes the real job.

What if a part goes on backorder mid repair

You hear about it the same day we do, along with the options. Those usually include an LKQ recycled original part from a comparable unit, a quality aftermarket equivalent where one exists, or fabrication. On molded caps, an LKQ part can turn a six week wait into a few days. We do not sit on backorder news and we do not substitute parts without telling you.

Can I get status updates without calling every week

You get contacted at every stage change: authorization, teardown findings, supplement submitted, supplement approved, parts arrival, entry into paint, and ready for pickup. If a stage is going to run long, you hear it when we know rather than when you ask. Tell us at intake whether you prefer phone, text or email and we will use that channel throughout.

How long does a full repaint take

On a large coach, plan on several weeks of shop time. The spray itself is a small fraction of it. Decal removal, adhesive cleanup, sanding failed clear back to a stable base, gelcoat chip and stress crack repair, sealing, and color evaluation under natural light all happen before the first coat of base. Rushing preparation is the single most common cause of a repaint that fails early.

Why does the shop need the vehicle for the estimate rather than just photos

Because photographs cannot be tap tested and cannot be metered. On laminated construction the visible damage is the smallest part of the story, and a hollow area extending three feet beyond a bubble does not photograph at all. Moisture mapping, structural measurement and operating a mechanism to reproduce a fault are all physical. Photos are useful for triage and for telling you whether the job is in our scope.
