Sheet and post versus composite: identifying your box before the estimate
The first thing an estimator does on a box truck is establish the body construction, because the two common types repair on completely different terms. A sheet and post body has visible vertical rivet lines every sixteen to twenty four inches, and each aluminum panel spans between posts. A composite body has a smooth exterior with almost no fasteners visible on the sides, because the panels are wide bonded sections of fiberglass reinforced skin over a core.
On a sheet and post body the damage is contained by the posts. A forklift puncture in one bay is one panel. We drill out the rivets across the affected bay, remove the skin, inspect and treat the post faces, fit new panel material and re rivet with correct diameter and grip length. The repair line falls at a rivet seam so it disappears into the existing pattern.
On a composite body there is no natural repair boundary, so we make one. Damaged laminate is cut back to sound material, the edges are scarfed to create a bonding taper, the core is rebuilt, and new skin is laminated or bonded in with structural adhesive under clamp pressure with cure time at temperature. The result is stronger than the original panel at the repair, but the job takes longer and the truck cannot leave halfway through.

Rivet line corrosion and what is actually happening behind the panel
Every West Covina box truck that has been in service ten years shows the same thing: a chalky white bloom around the rivet heads and a vertical stain streak running down from each one. Owners read that as cosmetic. It is not. It is aluminum reacting with steel post material and moisture in a galvanic cell, and the corrosion is eating the fastener and the post face from the inside.
When we pull a panel on a truck showing this pattern, the post face underneath is usually pitted, and sometimes the top hat section of the post has perforated. Putting a new panel over that substrate is a repair that looks perfect and fails in three years. So the estimate on a corroded seam includes treating or replacing the post material, and we show you the condition with the panel off before committing to a scope.
Prevention on a repaired seam comes down to isolation and sealant. Correct fastener material, isolation between dissimilar metals, and a sealant bead in the lap joint rather than a bare metal to metal contact is what makes the new seam last. It costs a small amount of extra labor at the time and it is the difference between a ten year seam and a three year seam.
Roll up door repair: track, rollers, hinges, bottom panel and spring
Roll up doors fail in a sequence and the symptoms tell you where in that sequence you are. A door that is stiff at the top but fine at the bottom usually has a spring losing tension. A door that binds at one specific height has a pinched track or a seized roller. A door whose slats no longer stay in line has worn hinges. A door that will not latch has almost always got a rear frame that is no longer square.
We rebuild all of it. Track sections are straightened or replaced, rollers and hinges are replaced across the whole door rather than at the one obvious failure, damaged slats and the bottom panel are replaced, the threshold seal is reset, and the counterbalance spring is retensioned or replaced as an assembly. Springs are handled as an assembly because a wound spring is stored energy and rebuilding it piecemeal is not how it is done safely.
The critical step is squaring the rear frame first. A roll up door is a precision assembly running in two parallel tracks. If a dock strike pushed the corner post in an inch and a half, no amount of door work will make it run right. Post straightening comes first, the header gets checked for square, and only then does the door go back together.

Interior scuff band, liner and floor damage inside a dry van body
The inside of a box takes as much damage as the outside and gets ignored twice as long. The scuff band, that hardwood or composite strip running along the lower wall, is designed to be sacrificial and it does its job until it splits and starts catching cargo. Replacing scuff band is straightforward and it protects the liner and the post structure behind it.
Liner panels above the scuff band separate from the posts when the fasteners pull through or when a load punched the panel. Once a liner panel is loose it flaps, catches, and tears further every load. We replace liner panels, refasten to sound post material, and address the post if the fastener holes have wallowed out. Floors take the worst of it. Hardwood van floors wear at the door threshold and at the pallet jack line, screed rails loosen, and water gets in at the rear where the seal gave up. We replace floor sections, reset threshold plates, replace logistics track and E track, and repair or install tie down anchors that are mounted into structure rather than into the floor boards alone.
Roof damage on a box body after a low clearance strike
The low clearance hit is the most common catastrophic box truck event in the San Gabriel Valley, and it is nearly always a parking structure, a drive through clearance bar or a tree limb on a residential street. What separates a moderate repair from a major one is whether the roof bow structure moved or only the skin tore.
A translucent or aluminum roof sheet torn between bows, with the bows intact, is a skin replacement. We remove the damaged sheet, inspect every bow and the top rail on both sides, fit new sheet material, and seal the perimeter properly. That perimeter seal is the whole job on a roof: a roof that leaks after a repair leaks at the edge, not in the middle.
When the bows are bent, the top rails have deflected and the whole box has racked slightly. That shows up as doors that no longer close and a body that has lost square. The repair is structural: straightening or replacing bows, resetting the top rail, and squaring the body before the roof goes back on. We measure rather than eyeball, because a box that is out of square by an inch will never seal at the rear.

My roll up door binds halfway. Do I need a new door?
Rarely. A door that binds at a specific height almost always has a pinched track, a seized roller or a rear frame that is out of square from a dock strike. The fix is squaring the frame, straightening or replacing the track section, and replacing rollers and hinges across the door. Full door replacement is reserved for doors with widespread slat damage or a curtain that has been forced so often the hinges are gone throughout.
What is the white powder and the streaks under the rivets on my box?
That is galvanic corrosion at the fastener where aluminum panel meets steel post structure, plus the runoff staining the panel below it. It is not cosmetic. Behind the panel the post face is usually pitted and sometimes perforated. When we open a seam like that we show you the substrate before we scope the repair, because putting a new panel over a corroded post is a repair that fails within a few years.
A forklift punched a hole in my composite box. Can that be patched?
Yes, but properly rather than with a plate over the hole. We cut back to sound laminate, scarf the edges to create a bonding taper, rebuild the core material, then bond and laminate new skin under clamp pressure with a full cure. The finished repair is as strong as the original panel and gets faired and refinished so it does not read as a patch. It does need the truck to stay through the cure.
How long is a box truck in the shop for a rear post and door job?
For a typical dock strike with a bent corner post, a jammed door and a damaged threshold, plan on most of a week. Post straightening or replacement is the long pole and runs in a band of roughly ten to twenty hours depending on how far into the header and side rail it reaches. Door track, rollers, hinges and spring work add several more, then paint and cure. Parts lead time is often the real variable.
Can you replace the wood scuff band and liner inside the box?
Yes. Scuff band replacement is common and worth doing as soon as it splits, because it is protecting the liner and post structure behind it. Liner panels get replaced and refastened into sound post material, and where the fastener holes have wallowed out we address the post rather than moving to a bigger screw. Floor sections, threshold plates and logistics track are handled at the same time.
