What reconditioning means on a vehicle this size

Detailing a 38 foot motorhome is not detailing a car with more surface area. The materials are different, the failure modes are different, and the access problems are real. A coach has gelcoat, painted fiberglass, filon, aluminum, EPDM or TPO membrane, vinyl awning fabric, acrylic windows, chrome, and half a dozen kinds of rubber seal, and every one of those wants a different chemical and a different pad.

Reconditioning is the broader term for what most owners actually want. It covers the wash and the polish, but it also covers pulling black streaks that have been baked into the gelcoat for three years, removing oxidation down to sound material, cleaning and treating the seals so they stop taking a set, deodorizing an interior that has held a closed up summer, and getting the roof clean enough that the next inspection is meaningful.

All of it happens in the building at Yorba Linda. That matters more than it sounds for a job this size. Working under a roof means controlled water use, no direct sun on the panel while a compound is on it, proper lighting to actually see what you are correcting, and lift access to reach the top third of a coach without a ladder wobbling under someone. We do not offer mobile service, so the vehicle comes to us.

Reading the paint before anyone touches a buffer

Every reconditioning job starts with an assessment of what is actually on the panel, because the wrong first move is expensive. Our detail lead checks whether the surface is gelcoat or paint, whether the clear is intact or already failing, how much material is left to work with, and whether the defects are in the surface or below it.

That distinction decides everything. A swirl or a water spot sitting in the clear can be leveled and polished out. Oxidation in gelcoat can be cut back to sound resin. But if the clearcoat has begun to delaminate, aggressive compounding will accelerate the failure and take the finish off in sheets. In that case the honest answer is that the vehicle needs paint, not polish, and we say so before taking your money for a correction that will not hold.

We also test a small area first. A test spot with the intended pad and compound tells us how the finish responds, how much correction is realistic, and how many stages the job needs. Showing an owner a corrected two foot square next to the untouched panel is far more useful than any description, and it sets expectations honestly on a coach that has been sitting outside for fifteen years.

Decontamination: the stage that decides how the polish turns out

Washing removes dirt. It does not remove what is bonded to the surface, and on an RV that has lived outdoors in Los Angeles County the bonded contamination is substantial. Industrial fallout, rail dust, tree sap, overspray, hard water mineral deposits from sprinklers, and the black streaks that are actually oxidized sealant and roof runoff baked into the finish.

Chemical decontamination comes first: a dedicated black streak remover worked panel by panel, an iron remover on painted surfaces where fallout has embedded, and an acid safe treatment for mineral deposits where the etching has not yet gone deep. This stage is slow and it is the difference between a coach that looks clean and a coach that looks new.

Mechanical decontamination follows with a clay bar or a clay medium on paint and gelcoat that is smooth enough to take it. On heavily oxidized gelcoat clay does nothing useful, so that surface goes straight to compounding instead. Skipping decontamination and going directly to a buffer drags bonded contamination across the finish under a spinning pad, which is exactly how a detail creates more defects than it removes.

Correction stages, pad selection and controlling heat

Correction is done in stages, and the goal is always to use the least aggressive combination that gets the result. A heavy cut wool pad with an aggressive compound removes defects fast and leaves its own haze behind, which then needs a polish stage and sometimes a finishing stage to clean up. Starting too aggressive means removing more material than necessary, and on an RV there is a finite amount of gelcoat or clear to work with.

Pad and compound get matched to the surface. Gelcoat is thicker than automotive clear and tolerates more cut. Filon panels flex under pad pressure, which changes how the machine tracks and makes it easy to burn an edge. Painted fiberglass caps have curves and corners where the pad rides on a high spot and cuts through in seconds if the operator is not paying attention. Edges, body lines and raised seams get taped or hand worked rather than machined.

Heat is the constant enemy. A rotary buffer on a dark sidewall in a hot bay builds temperature fast, and heat is what causes burn through, what softens filler under a repair, and what makes a compound gum up instead of cutting. Working indoors, keeping panel temperature down, working smaller sections and cleaning pads frequently is not a nicety on a vehicle with 400 square feet of sidewall. It is the only way to finish the job without damage.

Interior reconditioning on a coach that has been lived in

An RV interior is a small home that gets closed up hot for months at a time. That produces problems a car interior never has: mildew in the shower surround and around window frames, odor absorbed into upholstery and headliner fabric, grease film on the ceiling above the cooktop, and the dust that comes in through every vent on a dirt road and settles into the fabric.

The work is systematic. Cabinets and drawers emptied and wiped, headliner and wall panels cleaned with material appropriate to whether they are vinyl, fabric or padded, upholstery and carpet extracted with hot water rather than surface cleaned, hard floors stripped of old dressing and re treated, and the shower, sinks and toilet area cleaned and deodorized properly rather than perfumed.

Odor is the request we get most often and the one that takes the most honesty. Surface treatment removes surface odor. Odor that has soaked into a mattress, into carpet padding, or into a subfloor that got wet is a different problem, and no amount of ozone fixes a wet subfloor. If a smell is coming from water damage, the detail will not solve it and we will tell you what will.

Roof, awning fabric, seals and the parts owners forget

The roof is the surface that never gets attention and causes the most trouble. An EPDM membrane that has not been cleaned in years holds a layer of oxidized rubber and grit that runs down the sides every time it rains, which is where black streaks come from. Cleaning it correctly means the right chemical for the membrane type, soft brushing rather than pressure, and no petroleum based product anywhere near EPDM.

Awning fabric and slide toppers collect sap, pollen and mildew and are frequently ignored until they stain permanently. Vinyl and acrylic fabrics take different cleaners, and both should be dried fully before rolling up, because rolling a wet topper is how mildew gets started in the first place. We clean them extended and let them dry before retracting.

Seals are the last thing anyone thinks about and one of the most valuable. Slide bulb seals, wiper seals, window gaskets and door seals all dry out under ultraviolet load, take a compression set, and stop sealing. Cleaning and treating them with the correct conditioner keeps them pliable. That is a maintenance item that costs very little and prevents the water intrusion repairs that cost a great deal.

Why inland Southern California is hard on RV finishes

A coach stored at a home in Merced Manor or Sunset Hills, or parked in a yard along Azusa Avenue, is uncovered nearly year round. Ultraviolet exposure inland runs harder and longer than it does on the coast, and it is the primary driver of both gelcoat chalking and clearcoat failure. The roof cap and the upper third of the sidewalls always show it first.

Water is the second factor and it works in an unexpected direction. Sprinkler overspray on a rig parked near a lawn deposits dissolved minerals that concentrate as the water evaporates in the sun. Those minerals etch into gelcoat and clear, and once they have etched, washing accomplishes nothing. Catching that early, while it is a deposit rather than an etch, is the difference between a wash and a correction.

The third is airborne. Brake dust and road grit thrown off the 10 and the 60 during commute hours, agricultural and construction dust from the east, and industrial fallout all settle onto horizontal surfaces and bond there. That is why the tops of slide fascias, the roof caps and the awning rails collect a film that ordinary soap will not lift, and why decontamination is a standard stage here rather than an upsell.

Questions we get asked

Can heavy oxidation on a fifteen year old motorhome actually be brought back?

Usually yes on gelcoat, sometimes no on painted surfaces. Gelcoat is thick, and chalking is oxidized resin sitting on sound material underneath, which compounding can cut through to reach. Painted panels are different: if the clearcoat has started to delaminate, cutting into it accelerates the failure. We run a test section first and show you the realistic result before you authorize the full job.

How long does a full detail on a 36 foot RV take?

A wash, interior clean and single stage polish on a coach in reasonable shape runs one to two days. Multi stage correction with heavy oxidation removal, roof and awning cleaning, and full interior extraction runs several days to a week. Surface area is the driver. A 36 foot coach has roughly four times the exterior of a large SUV, and the roof adds a full working surface most vehicles do not have.

Is a ceramic coating worth it on an RV or does it just wash off?

It holds up well on sound paint and properly prepared gelcoat, and it makes future washing dramatically easier, which matters on a vehicle this size. What it does not do is fix a finish that is already failing. A coating over oxidized gelcoat locks the oxidation in place. Correction has to come first, and on fresh paint you need to let the finish cure for 60 to 90 days before coating it.

Will polishing remove the black streaks running down my sidewalls?

Polishing alone often will not. Black streaks are roof runoff and degraded sealant that have chemically bonded into the surface, and the correct approach is a dedicated streak remover worked panel by panel during decontamination, before any machine touches the vehicle. Streaks that have been there for years may leave a shadow that only correction removes. Cleaning the roof is what stops them from coming back.

Can you get the smell out of an RV that has been closed up all summer?

Usually, if the source is surfaces. Fabric extraction, hard surface cleaning, cleaning the AC return and ducting area, and treating at the source will handle stale closed up odor. What we cannot fix with cleaning is odor coming from moisture inside a wall or a soft subfloor, or from a mattress that has absorbed it. If we find that, we will tell you what the actual repair is instead of masking it.

Should I detail my RV before or after body and paint work?

After, always. Polishing a coach and then sending it into the body shop means the reconditioning gets undone by masking tape, sanding dust and repair work. Sequence body repair first, paint second, then reconditioning last so the finish work is what you take delivery on. If the vehicle is getting fresh paint, hold protection products until the clear has cured.

Do you detail the roof and is that necessary?

Yes, and it matters more than the sidewalls. An unwashed EPDM or TPO membrane sheds oxidized material every time it rains, which is where black streaking comes from, and a dirty roof makes any inspection of the sealant beads useless. We clean membranes with chemicals matched to the material, using soft brushing rather than pressure, and we look at the sealant while we are up there.
