Compartment door alignment and latch geometry on a working engine
The complaint we hear most often from an engine company is a compartment door that has to be lifted or slammed before it catches. The door is rarely the actual problem. Compartment openings are built into the body structure itself, and when the body has taken a hit, settled on a tired mounting, or corroded at the lower sill, the opening stops being square. A pan door hung on a straight hinge line inside a rhomboid opening will bind hard on one corner and miss the striker on the other.
So we measure the opening across both diagonals before anyone touches the hardware. If the diagonals disagree, the repair is structural: straighten or let in new corner post and sill material, re-establish the opening, then hang the door to it. If the opening measures true, the fault is hinge wear, a sagging door pan, a striker that has walked in its slot, or a compression seal that has taken a permanent set. Latch geometry gets set against a seal at its correct crush, never against a flattened bulb.
Compartment interiors come apart in the same job. Shelf standards, roll out trays and tool board backing all fasten through the compartment wall, and when a wall panel is replaced the structure behind it has to be rebuilt too. Otherwise the first fully loaded tray pulls its fasteners straight through new skin. We fabricate backing plates, tie tray slides into framing rather than into sheet, and put the compartment back to the layout the crew had before the rig came in.

Roll up shutter doors: slats, tracks and a header that moved
A roll up shutter door is a curtain of interlocking aluminum slats riding in side tracks with a counterbalance drum housed in the header above the opening. That construction is forgiving of small dings and unforgiving of anything that changes its geometry. One crushed slat from a scene contact will hang up at exactly the same height every time the curtain travels, and running it that way peels the interlock on the neighboring slats until half the curtain needs replacing instead of one piece.
We take the curtain out, replace damaged slats individually where the profile is still available, and inspect every track for pinch points along its full length. Tracks that have been squeezed at the bottom by a hose load or a scene strike get straightened or replaced. The important check is the header itself: if the body header above the opening has bowed, resetting the track only hides the problem, and the curtain will bind again within a few weeks. Header structure comes first, track second, curtain last.
Bottom rail, latch bar, seal and weather strip are replaced as a set once the opening is true, because a curtain that has been fighting a bent track has usually chewed all four. Finish is handled panel by panel. Where a slat section can be refinished without stacking film thickness into the interlock we refinish it, and where it cannot we tell you plainly that new slat stock will look and travel better than a repaired one.

Aluminum, stainless and diamond plate on a single body
A modern apparatus body is three metals bolted together. The structure is usually aluminum extrusion and sheet. Hinges, latch hardware, grab handles and many fasteners are stainless. Tread surfaces, rub rails and kick plates are polished or brushed diamond plate. Each of those responds differently to a hit and to a decade of washdown, and the joints between them are where an apparatus body actually starts to fail long before any panel gets damaged.
The dissimilar metal joint is the one to watch. A stainless fastener driven into aluminum framing sets up a galvanic couple, and once the isolating washer or sealant is gone, the aluminum around the fastener corrodes. It shows as a white powdery bloom at the fastener head, then as paint lifting in a halo, then as a tread plate that no longer sits flat because the material under it has swelled. Tightening the fastener at that stage makes it worse, not better.
Repair means opening the joint. We remove the tread plate or rub rail, cut back the corroded aluminum to sound material, let in new stock, and reassemble with correct fasteners, isolating washers and a sealant rated for the couple. Diamond plate is replaced in matched pattern and matched brightness so a new piece does not read as a patch next to the original. Rub rails go back with the standoff spacing the body maker intended, since that gap is what keeps the rail from trapping water against the side.
Subframe mounting, hose bed structure and running boards
Apparatus bodies are not welded to the chassis. They sit on a bolted or floating subframe designed to let the body move a controlled amount relative to the frame rails, because a heavy chassis twists on a driveway apron and a rigid aluminum box does not want to twist with it. Isolators, spacers and correctly torqued hardware are what make that work. When the isolators harden, crush or come loose, the body starts taking frame twist directly, and the cracks show up at compartment corners and at the top rail rather than at the mounting.
That is why we inspect the whole mounting line whenever an apparatus comes in for body work, even when the reported damage is somewhere else entirely. We check hardware condition and torque, look for elongated bolt holes, replace hardened isolators, and rebuild cracked mounting brackets with correctly specified stock. Restoring the intended float is usually the difference between a compartment corner repair that lasts and one that reopens in a season.
Hose bed floor, dividers, tailboard and running board structure get the same treatment. A hose bed floor that deflects underfoot has lost support beneath it, not just surface stiffness, so we go in from below and rebuild the framing. Ladder racks, hard suction tube troughs and the brackets that carry them are tied into body framing rather than hung off skin, and the load path is checked before anything is refinished and reinstalled.

Chevron striping, light bezels and the pump panel face
Rear chevron striping in the NFPA style pattern is reflective sheeting, not paint, and it is the first thing destroyed by a rear body repair. We photograph and measure the existing layout before removal so the angle, stripe width and color alternation go back exactly as they were. New sheeting is applied to fully cured, clean and prepared refinish, because sheeting laid over green paint will lift at the edges the first time the rig gets pressure washed. Body side identification striping and department lettering are handled the same way.
Emergency lighting work is deliberately narrow. Where a body repair required a light head to come off, we handle the mounting structure, the penetration through the panel, the bezel and its resealing, and the routing and protection of the harness through the body. That is a body and sealing job, and we treat it as one. We do not design warning systems, we do not specify or certify a lighting package, and we do not take on siren or controller work. Those belong with your apparatus electrical provider.
The pump panel surround is body work in a spot that gets looked at constantly. Dented surrounds are straightened or replaced, gauge panel faces cracked around their openings are replaced with new stock cut to the same pattern, and labels and placards are reproduced to the original layout. What we do not touch is anything behind the panel. Pump plumbing, valves, gauges themselves and the testing of any of it stays with the shop that services your pump.
What stays with your apparatus service provider, and driving the rig down
Being clear about the boundary saves a phone call and a wasted trip. OCRV Center is a collision, body, structural, fiberglass and paint facility. On a fire apparatus that means the body, the cab exterior, the compartments, the doors, the subframe mounting, the equipment mounting structure, glass, striping and paint. It does not mean anything that makes the apparatus perform its function, and we will say so at the estimate rather than after teardown.
Specifically: we do not perform pump testing or pump service, we do not certify or service aerial ladders and platforms, we do not touch hydraulic cylinders, pumps or valves beyond the structure they mount to, and we do not do engine, drivetrain, transmission or brake work. Ground ladder testing and any roadworthiness certification are outside our scope as well. Your apparatus dealer or service provider keeps all of that, and there is no overlap between the two scopes.

One compartment door on our engine has to be lifted before it latches. Is that just a hinge?
Usually not. That symptom almost always means the compartment opening has racked out of square, from a hit, from corrosion at the lower sill, or from subframe mounting that has gone loose. We measure both diagonals of the opening first. If they disagree, we correct the structure and then hang the door to a true opening. Adjusting hinges or moving the striker on a racked opening buys a few weeks and then it binds again.
Can a damaged roll up door be fixed without buying a whole new curtain?
Often, yes. If the slat profile is still supplied we replace only the damaged slats, straighten or replace the track, and reset the counterbalance. The deciding factor is the header above the opening. If the body header has bowed, that has to be corrected first or the new slats will bind exactly where the old ones did. We check the header before quoting the curtain, so you get an honest number instead of a repeat visit.
Our rear chevron striping is peeling at the edges. Can that be redone with the body work?
Yes, and it is the right time to do it. We photograph and measure the existing chevron layout before removal so stripe width, angle and color alternation go back the way your department specified them. New reflective sheeting goes onto fully cured, prepared paint. Sheeting applied over fresh refinish is the main reason chevrons lift at the edges, so the striping schedule follows the paint schedule rather than racing it.
Do you test the pump or certify the aerial while the apparatus is in your shop?
No. We are a body, structural, fiberglass and paint shop. Pump testing, pump service, aerial and ground ladder certification, hydraulic component service and all engine, drivetrain and brake work stay with your apparatus dealer or service provider. What we do is the body, compartments, doors, subframe mounting, equipment mounting structure, glass, striping and paint. We will tell you the boundary at the estimate so there are no surprises after teardown.
How long is an engine out of service for compartment and body repair?
It depends far more on parts than on labor. Slat stock, extrusion, hardware and diamond plate for common bodies move reasonably quickly. Model specific compartment door pans and body maker parts can add weeks. A squared compartment opening with door, seal and refinish work typically runs a labor band of roughly twenty to forty hours before paint and cure. We write the estimate, order parts, then give you a start date rather than holding the rig while parts ship.
