What separates camper repair from RV repair

A motorhome or a fifth wheel is a rigid box. It has one shape, it holds that shape, and when it fails it fails at seams and penetrations that stay in the same place for the life of the vehicle. A camper is different in a way that changes everything about how it breaks. Most campers fold, lift, collapse, hinge or bolt onto something that moves independently of them.

That single difference produces a completely different failure list. Where an RV leaks at a sealant bead, a camper leaks at a joint that opens and closes several hundred times a season. Where an RV cracks at a stress concentration in a laminated wall, a camper cracks where a jack mount, a tie down anchor or a hinge is trying to carry a load through a panel that was built light on purpose.

Weight is the other governing constraint. Campers exist because owners wanted something lighter than an RV. Manufacturers deliver that with thin composite panels, aluminum skins over minimal framing, foam cores and small section extrusions. All of that is fine under design load and unforgiving of point loads. An anchor that was never backed, a rack foot bolted through a roof skin, a jack that took a side load: those are the repairs we see.

So a camper evaluation looks in different places than an RV evaluation does. We spend our time at the mounts, the hinge lines, the lift hardware, the fold seals and the panel edges. We spend less time on things a camper does not have, like a fifty foot run of membrane roof or a bank of slide rooms on a shared hydraulic system.

Canvas, soft walls and the way fabric actually fails

Every pop up, folding camper and pop top carries fabric, and fabric in Southern California has a service life driven by ultraviolet exposure rather than by use. The vinyl or acrylic coated material itself goes chalky and stiff first. It loses the ability to flex without cracking, and the cracking starts at the fold lines where the material is creased every time the camper comes down.

The stitching goes before the fabric does on most units. Thread is a smaller cross section than the panel it holds and it takes the same ultraviolet load, so it degrades faster. Owners describe it as a seam that opened for no reason. What actually happened is that the thread had been failing progressively for three seasons and the last fold finished it. Restitching a panel whose fabric is still sound is a legitimate repair. Restitching a panel that is chalked and stiff is not, and we say so.

Windows and screens are the third element. Vinyl window panels haze, then crack, and cracked vinyl in a corner spreads across the panel quickly because the crease concentrates the movement. Zippers seize with grit and then get forced, which tears the tape out of the fabric. On a camper that is otherwise sound, a panel by panel replacement plan is often the right answer rather than a full canvas replacement.

The single largest cause of premature canvas failure is folding it damp. West Covina owners come home from Big Bear or the Colorado River on a Sunday, put the camper down wet, and open it four weeks later. Mildew stains the fabric, and more importantly it degrades the coating. Nothing we do at the shop reverses that, so it is worth saying plainly: open it up and dry it before it goes away.

Lift systems, actuators and roofs that raise

Pop up trailers, hard side pop ups, pop top truck campers and modern collapsible campers all raise a roof, and the mechanism doing it is where the expensive failures live. Older folding trailers use a cable and winch system with four lift arms in a scissor arrangement. Newer designs use gas struts, electric actuators or a hydraulic system, and some hard side units use a screw drive at each corner.

The failure mode common to all of them is going out of square. If one corner lifts before another, the roof racks in its guides, the roof to wall interface twists, and every part of the system takes a load it was not designed for. On a cable system this shows up as a cable that frays at the drum or at a pulley. On an actuator system it shows up as one motor stalling while the others keep running.

Owners almost always report it as a roof that got hard to raise. That is the early warning and it is the point at which the repair is cheapest. Push past it and the results are a bent lift arm, a stripped drive, a torn roof skin at a guide, or a roof that comes down on someone. We are direct about this because a lift system that binds is not a nuisance, it is a load path that is failing.

Repair starts with getting the roof square and level again, then addressing what caused the loss of square: a worn bushing, a stretched cable, a seized guide, a bent arm, a corroded screw drive or an actuator that has lost synchronization. Cables get replaced as a set rather than individually, because a single new cable next to three stretched ones just relocates the problem.

How campers attach to trucks, hitches and racks

Truck campers sit in a pickup bed and are held by four tie downs that pull the camper down against the bed floor. The load path runs from the camper's tie down eyes, through the turnbuckles, into brackets mounted to the truck frame or the bed rail. Every one of those points is a place we see damage. The camper side tears at the wing where the eye is mounted. The truck side bends a bed rail that was never intended to carry a vertical pull.

Trailer campers hang their weight on a coupler, a tongue and an axle. Teardrops and A frames are light enough that owners tend to ignore the running gear, which is exactly why we find seized bearings, cracked axle mounting plates and spring hangers whose fasteners have worked loose. On a small trailer those failures happen quickly because there is no second axle to carry the load.

Rooftop tents and roof mounted camper boxes are their own category. The load goes into a rack, the rack goes into a vehicle roof, and vehicle roofs are thin panels supported by bows. Static load is rarely the issue. Dynamic load on a washboard road, multiplied by a tall lever arm, is what cracks mounting feet and dimples roof panels.

Overland and off road campers add articulation deliberately, with a pivoting hitch or a three point chassis mount, so the trailer or box can move relative to the tow vehicle without loading itself. Those systems work well until a bushing wears or someone adds a rigid accessory bracket that quietly defeats the articulation. Then everything downstream of the mount starts cracking.

Water damage in a camper starts low and hides well

Campers have compact floors and those floors sit close to everything. The floor of a truck camper is right above the truck bed. The floor of a folding camper carries the bunk ends that cantilever out either side. The floor of a teardrop is the structural spine of the trailer. When water gets into a camper floor, it does structural damage faster than the same water would in a large RV, because there is less material and every square foot is doing a job.

The classic truck camper case is corner post rot. Water enters at a seam or a window frame, runs down inside the vertical corner, and softens the post and the surrounding floor edge. From the outside the camper looks fine. From the inside the paneling looks fine. The evidence is a corner that flexes when you push it, a jack that has started to sit at an angle, or a seam that has opened at the bottom of the corner.

On folding campers, the bunk end floor is the equivalent. It is a cantilevered platform with a hinge at the inboard edge, it carries the weight of sleepers, and it is directly under the fabric that has been leaking. Sag at the outboard corner of a bunk end is a structural finding, not a settling issue.

Our approach is the same across types: find where the water entered, open the affected area, remove everything that has gone soft, rebuild the structure with material that will carry the load, then reseal the entry point with a system rather than a bead over the old bead. Skipping the entry point means paying for the same repair again.

Shells, composite panels and the finishes over them

Camper construction covers a wider range of materials than any other vehicle category we work on. Teardrops may be a molded fiberglass shell, an aluminum skin over a wood frame, or a composite panel box. Truck campers are usually a laminated wall with a fiberglass or filon skin over foam and framing. Overland campers increasingly use structural composite panels with a foam or honeycomb core. Modular campers add hinged or telescoping panel sets.

Each construction repairs differently. A molded fiberglass shell gets ground back to sound laminate and rebuilt in stepped layers, then faired and refinished. A laminated wall gets its delamination injected and clamped when the substrate is intact, or opened and rebuilt when it is not. A structural composite panel with crushed core needs the core removed and replaced, because filling the hole restores the appearance and leaves a soft spot.

The finish is a separate conversation from the structure. Gel coated shells that have chalked can often be brought back with heavy oxidation removal and a proper cut and buff, and we test a small area before quoting so an owner knows which they have. Painted campers need color matching, and small campers are harder than large ones because there is less panel to blend into before you hit a break line.

Aluminum skinned campers, which includes a large share of older pop ups and many teardrops, have their own set: dents that work harden, cracking radiating from rivet lines, and sealant at lap seams that hardened and shrank decades ago. That work is metal finishing and riveting rather than laminate repair, and it is a different skill on the same shop floor.

Getting a camper from West Covina to the Yorba Linda shop

Bring the camper cleared of gear, with the water drained and the tanks dumped. If canvas is part of the job, bring it dry. If a lift system is the complaint, do not keep cycling it before you come, because every additional attempt on a binding lift does more damage than the original fault. Is it worth replacing canvas on an older pop up camper?

It depends entirely on the floor and the lift system, not on the canvas. New fabric on a camper with a rotted bunk end floor or a binding lift is money spent on the wrong thing. We evaluate the structure first, show you what we find, and then talk about canvas. If the box is sound and the lift works, replacement fabric transforms the camper and is a reasonable investment. If the floor is soft, that conversation comes first.

My truck camper jack is sitting crooked. What does that mean?

Usually that the mount is tearing rather than that the jack is bent, though both happen. Camper jack brackets attach to the wing or to a reinforced area of the sidewall, and they carry the entire weight of the camper in a concentrated vertical pull whenever it is loaded or unloaded. When the surrounding structure has taken water and softened, the bracket begins to rotate. Stop using it and send us photos, because a jack mount that lets go while a camper is elevated causes serious damage.

Can a cracked fiberglass teardrop shell be repaired invisibly?

Usually yes on a gel coated shell, and the work is stepped laminate repair rather than filler. We grind the crack back to sound material, rebuild the laminate in matched layers, then fair, prime and block until the surface reads flat under a guide coat before any color or gel goes on. Small trailers are harder to blend than large ones because there is less panel between the repair and the next break line, so we plan the blend at the estimate.

How long does a camper repair usually take at your shop?

Structural and canvas work is generally faster than the same job on a large RV because there is less vehicle. Finish work is not. A composite panel repair with paint carries the same cure schedule a motorhome does, and blending a small panel is not faster than blending a large one. The estimator will give you a realistic window at the appointment. Parts availability on discontinued lift hardware and older window frames is the most common cause of a longer stay.

Do you work on campers that were built by their owners?

Yes, and it is a large share of what comes through on teardrops, overland builds and rooftop setups. We do not assume any previous work is correct and we do not price the job before surveying what is actually there. Bring photos from the build and tell us who did what. Owner built campers most often need mount, load path and sealing work rather than what the owner came in asking about, and we will show you what we find before anything is authorized.

Can you repair a camper that is still on my truck?

Sometimes, depending on the job. Roof and upper sidewall work can often be done with the camper loaded. Anything involving the floor, the corner posts, the tie down structure or the jack mounts requires the camper off the truck and supported properly. We will tell you which category your repair falls into when you call. Everything happens at the Yorba Linda shop, so plan on leaving the camper with us either way.
