Jack mounts, the wing and the load nobody sees

A truck camper is the only vehicle we work on that routinely picks itself up off the ground and stands on four legs. Each jack carries roughly a quarter of the camper's loaded weight, and it carries it through a bracket bolted to the wing, which is the projecting section of the camper body just above the truck bed rail. That bracket is the most concentrated load path in the entire vehicle.

It is also mounted to a laminated wall. Manufacturers back the area with reinforcement, plywood, aluminum plate or a fabricated bracket depending on the builder, and how well that reinforcement was executed determines whether the mount lasts twenty years or ten. What we see is a mount that begins to rotate under load, cracking that radiates out through the wing skin along the fastener pattern, and eventually a bracket that has torn a section of the wall out with it.

The other cause is side loading. A camper that is jacked on uneven ground, or jacked with one leg on a soft surface, or jacked while it is still partially engaged with the truck bed, puts a lateral load into a bracket designed for a vertical one. Owners who load and unload frequently accumulate this damage in a way that owners who leave the camper on the truck do not.

Repair rebuilds the load path rather than reattaching the bracket. We open the area, assess how far the water and the tearing have gone, install proper backing that ties into structure, laminate the wall back to full thickness and remount the bracket with hardware that spreads load. On campers where the original mount was plainly undersized we fabricate a heavier one and detail its attachment accordingly.

Corner post rot and why the camper looks fine while it happens

The four vertical corners of a truck camper are the primary structure. On most builds a corner post ties the roof structure to the floor structure and holds the side and end walls together, and everything else in the camper depends on those four posts staying sound. They are also the place water goes when it enters at any seam near a corner.

The reason corner post rot goes unnoticed is that it is invisible from both sides. From outside, the corner is covered by a molded trim or a lap seam with sealant over it. From inside, it is behind interior paneling and usually behind a cabinet. Water can work at that post for two or three seasons with nothing visible anywhere.

The symptoms that do appear are indirect. A jack that has started to sit at an angle. A rear door that no longer latches cleanly. A seam at the bottom of a corner that has opened. A soft spot in the floor near a corner. A camper that has developed a slight twist so that it no longer sits flat in the bed. Any of those is worth having probed.

Repair opens the corner from the outside, removes the post and any framing, floor edge or wall material that has gone soft, rebuilds the structure with material that will hold a fastener and carry a load, then rebonds and refinishes the exterior. It is a real job and we do not pretend otherwise, but a camper with sound corners has decades left in it and one with rotted corners has a countdown running.

The cabover overhang and the crack at its transition

The cabover is the section that projects forward over the truck cab and carries the bed. It is a cantilever: supported only where it meets the main body, unsupported at its forward end, and carrying the weight of a mattress and two adults plus whatever is stored in the front nose. Every bump the truck takes flexes that cantilever.

The stress concentrates at the transition where the overhang leaves the main body, which on most campers is roughly above the front of the truck bed. Cracking there is common and it shows up as a line in the gel coat or paint running horizontally or diagonally at the transition, sometimes with a companion crack on the opposite side in the mirror position.

The other failure at the front is water. The cabover front window frame sits at the leading edge, takes the full force of anything the road throws and every rainstorm at highway speed, and its sealant is the first thing to shrink. Water that gets past it goes into the bunk floor, which is a thin platform, and the resulting soft spot is directly under where people sleep.

We repair the transition by grinding the crack back to sound laminate with a taper, rebuilding in stepped layers and reinforcing the internal structure at the transition where the design permits. Bunk floor repair means opening the platform, removing what has failed, rebuilding it to carry a real load and resealing the window frame properly rather than running another bead around it.

Tie downs, bed rail loading and the roof to sidewall seam

Four tie downs hold a truck camper down against the truck bed floor, and the load path runs from tie down eyes in the camper's lower corners, through turnbuckles, into brackets on the truck. That system is under constant tension, and every road input cycles it. Damage shows up on both sides.

On the camper side, the eye can pull through its mounting if the surrounding structure has taken water, and the lower rear corners are the usual location because that is where the camper wants to lift. On the truck side, bed mounted brackets can distort a bed rail that was never engineered for a sustained vertical pull. Frame mounted systems avoid that, which is why they are worth the extra work on a heavy camper.

The other structural item on the exterior is the roof to sidewall seam, which runs the entire perimeter of the camper. It is the longest seam on the vehicle, it is directly exposed to sun, and its sealant shrinks. Once it opens, water tracks down inside the wall and typically arrives at a corner post or a floor edge, which is how a seam problem becomes a structural problem.

We repair tie down structure by rebuilding backing that carries load into framing rather than into skin, and we will tell you plainly when a camper is too heavy for the tie down system it is wearing. Seam work removes the old material rather than burying it, inspects the substrate while it is open, and reseals with a product matched to the substrates involved.

Getting a truck camper to the shop from West Covina

My truck camper jack bracket is pulling out of the wall. Can that be fixed properly?

Yes, and the repair has to rebuild the load path rather than reattach the bracket. How do I check my truck camper for corner post rot?

Look for indirect symptoms, because the post itself is hidden behind exterior trim and interior paneling. A jack that has started to sit at an angle, a rear door that stopped latching cleanly, a seam that has opened at the bottom of a corner, a soft floor near a corner, or a camper that no longer sits flat in the bed are all worth investigating. Press firmly around each corner inside and out. If anything gives, bring it in and we will probe rather than guess.

There is a crack where my cabover meets the main body. Should I keep using it?

Get it looked at before your next trip. The cabover is an unsupported cantilever carrying a mattress, two people and whatever is stored in the nose, and the transition to the main body is where its stress concentrates. A crack there is structural, and it commonly has a mirror image on the opposite side that owners have not noticed. We grind it back with a taper, rebuild the laminate in stepped layers and reinforce the internal structure at the transition where the design allows.

Are frame mounted tie downs better than bed mounted ones?

For a heavy camper, yes, and the reason is where the load lands. Tie downs are under constant tension and every road input cycles them. A bed mounted bracket puts a sustained vertical pull into a bed rail that was not engineered for it, and over time the rail distorts. A frame mounted system carries that load into the truck frame instead. We can tell you at the appointment whether your camper's weight is reasonable for the system currently on the truck.
