Side sheet let in repair on a packer body, and why plating over does not last
A refuse body is a pressure vessel that somebody drives around a residential street. The packer blade puts cyclic load into the side sheets on every cycle, and those side sheets are already being abraded from the inside by whatever the morning produced. So when a container swings into the side of the body, or a low branch creases a panel, the damage does not stay local. The crease becomes a fold line that the blade works against, and the fold eventually becomes a split.
The repair that lasts is a let in. We cut the damaged sheet out to a clean boundary, land the cut on or near a vertical stiffener where the body design allows, let in new sheet of matched or heavier gauge, and weld it with full preparation so the seam carries load rather than sitting proud of it. Corner radii on a let in matter more than people think. Square corners are stress risers, and a square cornered patch in a packer side sheet will crack from that corner within a season of collection work.
What we do not do is plate over the outside. A doubler tacked across a split panel looks like a repaired truck for about four months. Water gets between the plate and the parent sheet, the joint corrodes from the inside, and the split keeps running behind the plate where nobody can see it. If a previous shop plated your body, we take the plate off and show you the parent metal before quoting, because what is underneath changes the scope more often than not.

Hopper skins, the rear sill and a tailgate that lives in leachate
The hopper is where a refuse body dies first. Every load lands in it, every wet load drains into it, and the rear sill sits in that liquid until the truck reaches the wash rack. Leachate is acidic and loaded with chlorides, which is about the fastest way to lose steel there is. The pattern almost never varies: the sill perforates first along the bottom radius, then the lower tailgate corners go, then the hopper skin at the loading edge where cans and shovels have been abrading it for years.
Hopper skin replacement is straightforward work and it is worth doing before the sill goes with it. We remove the worn skin section, inspect the framing behind it, replace or repair the frame members that have thinned, and fit new skin with the seams sealed rather than left open to wick. On a rear loader that also means checking the hopper lip, which absorbs the impact of every can dumped over it and is frequently the only part that has genuinely worn through.
A rear sill replacement is a bigger job and it is structural, because the sill ties the tailgate hinge structure back into the body. We cut the old sill out, verify tailgate hinge geometry before the new material is set, weld in with correct preparation, and reset the tailgate so it seats on the seal all the way around. A tailgate that seats on three quarters of its perimeter is why the body drips down the street, and it is also why the next sill will not last either.

Floor plate at the blade path and the body to chassis mounting line
Floor plate wears along the path the packer blade sweeps, and it wears unevenly. The heaviest loss usually sits in a band where the blade first bites, and again where it reaches the end of its stroke. Drivers notice a change in sound before they notice a hole, and by the time daylight shows through the floor, the plate all around it is already thin enough that a small patch has nothing sound to weld to.
We let in new floor plate across the whole worn band rather than spot patching, dress the weld on the wear face so the blade does not catch, and check the floor to side sheet seam while there is access. That seam collects leachate and corrodes from the inside out, so on an older body it frequently needs opening, cleaning back to sound metal and rewelding as part of the same floor job. Doing the seam later means cutting the new floor apart to reach it.
Body to chassis mounting gets checked on every refuse truck that comes through. These bodies are heavy, a side loader loads the rails asymmetrically all day, and the mounting works loose. The tells are rub marks in the frame paint, a body that rocks visibly at the rear on a turn, and elongated bolt holes in the mounting brackets. We rebuild brackets, replace fasteners, repair any drilling somebody put through the rail flange, and retorque to a body that has been shimmed square.
Cart tipper plates, side loader arm mounting and cab guards
Cart tipper mounting on a rear loader takes a full load cycle every few seconds on a residential run, and it is the mounting plate that fails rather than the tipper. Cracks start at the weld toe where the plate meets hopper structure and then run along the bead. Rebuilding means cutting the cracked plate out, letting in new stock, welding with correct preparation, and spreading the load into the body framing instead of into a sheet of skin that was never designed to carry it.
Automated side loader arm mounting is the same problem with a much longer lever arm. The arm reaches out, picks up a loaded cart, and swings it over the body, which puts a large moment into a structure bolted to the body side. When that structure cracks it is usually at the base plate corners and at the tie in to the body frame. We rebuild the mounting, gusset it with transitions that end on a taper rather than a square edge, and refit the arm assembly to a straight, coated surface. The arm mechanism, its grabber and the valves that drive it are equipment service items.
Cab guards and roof structure get hit by front loaders and by containers swinging overhead. A crushed cab guard has done exactly its job, but it has to be rebuilt rather than pushed back into shape, because a guard that has yielded once will fold at the same place at a fraction of the load. We straighten what is straightenable, replace what has kinked, rebuild the mounting into body framing, and refinish. Roof panels that have deflected get the framing under them checked before any skin work starts.

Coating a body that gets hot washed nightly, plus city seals and unit numbers
A refuse body is washed daily, often with a caustic detergent and hot water, and that changes what coating makes sense on it. A standard automotive finish will chalk and lose gloss in a single season on a body treated that way. We prepare back to sound substrate, treat, apply an epoxy or direct to metal primer, and topcoat with a hardened industrial finish selected for chemical resistance rather than for showroom depth. On hopper interiors and sills, a high build protective coating buys far more service life than paint does.
High visibility paint and reflective markings are part of the safety package on a municipal body, and they have to go back exactly as they came off. We photograph and measure the placement of chevron panels, rear conspicuity tape, side markings and beacon locations before disassembly, then reinstall after the coating has cured. Tape applied over a topcoat that has not fully cured lifts at the corners the first time the truck goes through the wash rack, which is the most avoidable callback in this line of work.
City seals, department names, unit numbers and recycling program graphics are the part the public actually reads. We remove what can be saved, refinish, then reinstall or reorder to the original placement measurements. Where a municipality supplies its own artwork or uses a specified vinyl vendor, we coordinate placement so the finished unit matches the rest of the yard. A truck that comes back with the seal sitting an inch low is a truck that gets talked about, so we measure rather than eyeball.

The floor of my packer body has worn through along the blade path. Is the body finished?
Not necessarily. Floor wear is expected, and a worn band gets let in with new plate as routine work. What decides whether the body is worth rebuilding is everything around the floor: side sheet condition at the bottom radius, the state of the floor to side sheet seam, and whether the sill and tailgate are still sound. We measure plate thickness in several places and give you a straight read on whether you are looking at a floor job or a body replacement.
My tailgate drips down the street on every run. Is a new seal the answer?
Rarely just a seal. A tailgate that leaks is usually seating on only part of its perimeter because the sill has corroded and dropped, the hinge geometry has shifted, or the gate itself has bowed. Fitting a new seal to a gate that is not seating square buys a few weeks. We check sill condition and hinge geometry first, rebuild what has moved, reset the gate, and then fit the seal to a body that can actually close on it.
There is a crack where the arm mounts on my automated side loader. Can that just be welded?
It can be repaired, but welding the crack alone is not the repair. The crack is telling you the load path concentrates at that point. We drill the crack tip, grind to sound metal, weld with matched filler, then rebuild the mounting so the moment from a loaded cart spreads into the body framing instead of into one plate corner. Gussets get shaped to end on a taper. The arm mechanism, its grabber and its valves stay with your equipment service provider.
What kind of paint holds up on a truck that gets caustic washed every night?
Not a standard automotive finish. We prepare to sound substrate, treat, prime with an epoxy or direct to metal primer, and topcoat with a hardened industrial finish chosen for chemical resistance. Hopper interiors and sills get a high build protective coating instead of paint, because that is a wear and immersion environment rather than a cosmetic one. Reflective tape and chevron panels go on after the coating has cured, which is what keeps them from lifting at the wash rack.
Will you do any mechanical or inspection work on a refuse truck while it is in the shop?
No. OCRV Center is a body, paint, structural and equipment mounting facility. Engines, drivetrains, transmissions and heavy truck brakes stay with your fleet maintenance provider, and we do not issue DOT inspections. Packer control systems, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves and PTO drives are equipment service items. Panels, hoppers, sills, floors, mounting plates, coatings and graphics are ours, and all of that is performed in shop at Yorba Linda.
