Hood repair on a Cascadia, T680, 579 or VNL

A heavy truck hood is one of the largest composite parts on any road vehicle, and it is the part most likely to be damaged and most expensive to replace. Because it is a molded panel with long unsupported spans, damage presents as cracking and delamination rather than dents. A crack that starts at the headlight cutout will grow every time the hood is tilted, because the tilt cycle loads exactly that area.

Repair means stopping the crack before rebuilding the surface. We drill the crack tip to arrest propagation, grind the crack out to a V from the show face, back the underside with structural mat and resin where access allows, laminate the front face, fair the contour, and refinish. On SMC panels the resin system and the primer have to be compatible with the substrate or the repair telegraphs through the finish within a season of Southern California sun.

The last step matters as much as the laminate. Hood hinge bushings, the tilt assist cylinders and the latch strikers all have to be checked. A hood that no longer sits square in the opening is being loaded in torsion every time it closes, and the repair will crack again in the same spot. Where hinges are worn we rebush or replace them before the panel goes back on.

Fairings, chassis skirts and aero parts after a curb or trailer strike

Aero packages take the majority of tractor body damage in urban work. Lower fairings hang close to the ground with long unsupported runs, so a curb or a barrier bends the panel and the failure shows up at the mounting bracket rather than at the impact. Owners see a fairing hanging low and assume the panel is the problem. In most cases the panel is repairable and the bracket has torn through.

We rebuild the mounting structure first: new brackets, repaired flanges, reinforced attachment points with load spread rather than a single bolt through thin material. Then the panel gets repaired, faired and refinished. Where a fairing has been hit hard enough to tear through multiple mounting points, replacement is genuinely the better outcome and we will say so instead of stitching together something that will fail again on the 91.

Sleeper roof fairings and cab extenders are lighter and crack in a different pattern: at the mounting feet from vibration, and at the leading radius from wind load plus a rock strike. Those get bonded, reinforced on the back side, and repainted. Cab extenders and side extenders are frequently damaged by trailer swing on tight yard turns, and their hinge and stop hardware wears out long before the panel does.

Cab structure, doors, corners and glass surrounds

Cab structure damage on a tractor divides into impact and corrosion. Impact damage from a lane change or a rollover moves the cab shell relative to its mounts and shows as door gaps that will not set, a windshield opening out of square, and a sleeper to cab seam that has opened. That is measured and pulled on the bench, not eyeballed, and the cab air suspension mounts get inspected because they carry the shell.

Corrosion damage on a cab is concentrated in three places: the lower door skins, the cab corners behind the step box, and the windshield and back glass surrounds. All three fail from the inside because seam sealer cracks and lets water sit in a lap joint. Cutting out and letting in new metal is the only durable repair. Filling over rusted metal on a truck that lives outdoors buys a year at best.

Glass surrounds get particular attention. When a windshield comes out for repair, the pinch weld frequently shows corrosion underneath that nobody knew about. We treat and rebuild that surface before new glass goes in, because urethane bonded to rust is not bonded to anything. Cab glass, door glass and sleeper window replacement is part of what we do in shop.

Headache racks, deck plates and equipment mounting on a tractor

Anything bolted between the cab and the fifth wheel lives in a torsional environment. The frame twists, the cab moves on its air mounts, and every bracket in between is cycled thousands of times a day. Headache rack mounts crack, deck plate supports fatigue at the weld toe, and light bar brackets loosen and then wallow their holes. This is fatigue, not a single event, so repairs have to change the load path rather than just reweld the crack.

We rebuild those mounts into the frame rail web with correctly sized fasteners and load spreading, gusset where the geometry allows, and avoid the rail flange entirely. Where a previous shop drilled the flange, we repair the hole and relocate. Coating goes on before install because a raw weld behind a bracket is a corrosion cell that will not be seen again until the bracket fails.

The same rules apply to chain hangers, tarp boxes, tool boxes, mud flap hangers and auxiliary tanks. We fabricate mounting in shop, fit it to the actual truck rather than to a catalog drawing, and finish it to match. Custom fabrication and body work happen under the same roof, so a rack rebuild and the paint that follows are one job rather than two shops and two schedules.

Fleet paint, unit numbering and reflective tape on tractors

Owner operators and small fleets out of West Covina care about how the truck presents, because the truck is the business card. We spray out and verify color before any panel is shot, and blend into the adjacent panel rather than stopping at a body line, which is the only way to make a repaired aero part sit correctly next to a sun aged cab.

Reflective conspicuity tape is replaced on clean prepared substrate after refinish. Tape applied over fresh paint before it has cured properly will lift at the edges the first time the truck is pressure washed, so sequencing matters. Chrome, polished aluminum and stainless trim is removed rather than masked wherever the part comes off cleanly.

Questions we get asked

Is a cracked hood on my Cascadia worth repairing or should I replace it?

It depends on where the crack is and how many there are. A single crack from a headlight opening, or a damaged leading edge, repairs well and lasts. A hood with cracks at multiple mounting points, delamination across a wide area, or damage through the hinge boss is a replacement, because the repaired panel would be carrying load through rebuilt material at every stress point. My lower fairing is hanging down after a curb strike. Do I need a whole new fairing?

Usually not. In most curb strikes the panel bends and the mounting bracket tears through, so the visible sag is a mounting failure rather than a panel failure. We rebuild the brackets with load spreading attachment, repair the panel, and refinish. Where the panel has torn through several mounting points or has crushed section, replacement is the better call and we will tell you which case you are in.

How long does a sleeper cab collision repair take?

A sleeper cab job with structural movement runs longer than most owners expect. Measuring, pulling the shell, replacing damaged panels, resetting glass openings and refinishing a large area typically puts the truck with us for two to three weeks, and longer if a molded sleeper panel has a lead time. We give you a start date and a realistic window at the estimate rather than taking the truck and finding out later.

Can you replace a windshield on a tractor while it is in for body work?

Yes, and doing it during the body repair is the right time. When glass comes out we get to see the pinch weld, which on an older tractor often has corrosion hiding under the urethane. We treat and rebuild that surface before the new glass is set, so the bond has sound substrate under it. Combining glass with the body work also saves you a second trip in from West Covina.

Do you service the engine or perform inspections while the truck is in the shop?

No. We are a body, paint, fiberglass and structural facility. Engine, aftertreatment, drivetrain, transmission and brake work all stay with your dealer or heavy truck mechanical shop, and we do not perform DOT inspections. Coordinating the two is common: many operators schedule the mechanical work right before or right after their body repair so the truck is only out of service once.
