Why a puncture in a reefer body is never just a puncture

A refrigerated body is a sandwich: an FRP or aluminum outer skin, a foam insulation core, and an inner liner. It works because that core is dry and sealed. The moment a forklift tine, a dock plate or a gate post breaks the outer skin, the core starts taking on moisture, and wet foam is not insulation. It is dead weight that conducts heat.

So the repair scope on a reefer is always larger than the visible damage. We probe the surrounding area to find where the sound core ends, cut back to dry material, remove the wet foam, rebuild the core, then scarf the skin edges, laminate or bond new skin under clamp pressure, and reseal. A patch bonded over a wet core traps the moisture and the panel keeps degrading underneath.

You can feel the consequence in operating cost long before you see it. A body with wet core sections runs the refrigeration unit harder to hold temperature, which is the actual reason many operators come in. Repairing the panel correctly restores the thermal envelope, which is the point of the whole body.

Insulated liner delamination and interior wall repair

Inside a reefer, the liner is bonded to the core. When that bond fails, the wall goes soft to the touch and then bulges. Drivers notice it as a wall that flexes when a pallet leans on it. The bond fails for two reasons: moisture from a breach in the outer skin, or impact from inside that broke the bond line without breaking the liner.

Repair depends on how far it has gone. A localized delamination in an otherwise dry wall can be re bonded with injected adhesive and clamped, which is a good and durable repair. A wall where the core is wet, or where the liner has cracked over a wide area, needs the section opened, the core dried or replaced, and new liner bonded in. We tell you which one you have after probing, not before.

Scuff band is the sacrificial part that is supposed to prevent all of this, and it is worth keeping in good condition for that reason alone. When scuff band splits, its fasteners start working loose and pulling out of the post structure, and cargo then contacts the liner directly. We replace scuff band, repair the post material where fasteners have wallowed out, and reset the band at correct height for how you actually load.

Rear frames, door seals and holding temperature at the door

Most temperature loss on a reefer body happens at the doors, and most door sealing problems are frame geometry problems. A rear corner post pushed in an inch by a dock strike breaks the seal along that whole edge. Replacing the gasket on a distorted frame gives you a new gasket that also does not seal.

So the order is frame first. We straighten or replace corner posts and header sections, square the rear frame, verify the door closes against a consistent gasket compression along its full perimeter, and only then fit new gaskets and thresholds. On swing door bodies the hinge and cam lock hardware gets rebuilt so the door pulls in evenly at both top and bottom.

Roll up doors on reefers add an insulated curtain and a much more sensitive threshold seal. The track, rollers, hinges and counterbalance spring all get rebuilt exactly as they would on a dry van, but the seal package matters more. A threshold that is out by a quarter inch is a visible frost line on the floor after a hot day, and that is what a route driver reports as a refrigeration problem.

What stays with your refrigeration service provider

This is a body shop scope and it stops at the refrigeration equipment. We do not service, diagnose or repair the reefer unit, the compressor, the evaporator, the controls, the refrigerant circuit or the fuel system that runs it. Those belong with your refrigeration service provider, and they are specialized work with their own certifications.

What we do handle is everything the unit mounts to and everything around it. The front wall structure the unit hangs on, the mounting frame, the bulkhead penetration and its sealing, the front cap and the panel work around the unit are all body work. When a unit has been removed for service, that is also the best moment to repair the front wall behind it, because that access does not come around often.

We also do not perform engine, drivetrain, transmission or brake work on the chassis, and we do not issue DOT inspections. Coordinating a body repair around a scheduled reefer service or chassis maintenance is straightforward when you tell us the dates, and it keeps the truck out of service once instead of three times.

Sanitation surfaces and finish choices on a food service body

Bodies carrying food have to present clean interior surfaces that survive repeated washdown, and that constrains what materials go into a repair. Liner materials, adhesives and any sealant used inside the box get selected for washdown durability and for compatibility with the surfaces already in the body, and joints get sealed so there is no open seam collecting product.

Aluminum and stainless threshold plates, corner guards and floor drain surrounds all take a beating from cleaning as much as from cargo. We repair and replace those in materials that hold up to it, and we finish transitions so there is no lip catching a pallet jack or trapping residue.

On the outside, the finish system is chosen for wash frequency and sun load. Reefer bodies get washed more than any other truck in a fleet, so a coating that chalks quickly under pressure washing is a bad choice regardless of how it looks on day one. We prepare, prime and topcoat with systems built for that duty cycle, and reinstall livery and unit numbering after cure.

Questions we get asked

There is a hole in the side of my reefer body. Can it be patched quickly?

A quick patch over a breach traps moisture in the foam core, and wet core is dead insulation that keeps spreading. The right repair is to probe out to dry material, remove the wet foam, rebuild the core, scarf the skin edges and bond new skin under clamp pressure with a full cure, then reseal every edge. It takes longer than a patch and it restores the thermal envelope instead of hiding the damage.

My reefer unit runs constantly to hold temperature. Is that a body problem?

It can be, and it is worth checking the body before anyone starts on the unit. Wet insulation core from an old breach, delaminated liner, a rear frame out of square so the gasket does not compress evenly, or a worn threshold seal will all make a healthy refrigeration unit work far harder than it should. We inspect the envelope and tell you what we find. The unit itself stays with your refrigeration service provider.

The inside wall of my box is soft and bulging. What causes that?

That is liner delamination: the bond between the inner liner and the foam core has failed. It happens from moisture that got in through a breach in the outer skin, or from an interior impact that broke the bond line without breaking the liner. A localized area in an otherwise dry wall can often be re bonded with injected adhesive under clamp. A wet or widespread area needs the section opened and rebuilt.

Do you service the refrigeration unit while the body is being repaired?

No. Compressors, evaporators, refrigerant circuits, controls and the fuel system that runs the unit are refrigeration service work and belong with your provider. We handle the structure the unit mounts to, the mounting frame, the bulkhead penetration and its sealing, and all the panel work around it. If your unit is coming off for service, tell us, because that is the best access anyone gets to the front wall.

How long is a refrigerated body down for a panel and core repair?

Longer than the same size repair on a dry van, because the core work and the bonded laminate both need full cure at controlled temperature. A moderate side panel breach with wet core removal typically puts the truck with us for about a week, sometimes more if the wet area turned out larger than the visible damage. We probe and scope before you commit, so the number you get is based on the actual boundary of the damage.
