Walk in step vans: step wells, door frames and the corrosion that starts there

A walk in parcel van has one structural weak point that outlives every other problem: the step well and the entry door frame. The driver steps in and out of it a hundred times a day, water and grit ride in on boots, and it collects in the well where it sits against the floor pan and the lower door frame. On a ten year old body that area is usually the reason it comes to us.

Repair is cut and let in, not fill. We remove the corroded step tread, floor pan section and door frame material, fabricate replacements in matching material, weld or rivet them in with correct isolation between dissimilar metals, and coat both faces before final assembly. On aluminum bodies with steel structural members, isolation is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that starts blooming next winter.

The entry door itself gets attention at the same time. Folding door hinges, tracks and seals on a step van are consumables, and a door that has been forced against a distorted frame has usually worn its own hardware. We reset the frame square first, then rebuild the door hardware to it.

Aluminum body panels and translucent roof repair on a delivery body

Parcel and furniture bodies are usually aluminum sheet over structural posts, often with a translucent roof panel that lets drivers work inside without lighting. That roof panel is the part owners forget about until it leaks. The panel yellows and embrittles with ultraviolet exposure, then cracks, and the failure is almost always at the perimeter where the panel is fastened and sealed.

We replace translucent roof panels, rebuild the perimeter fastening and sealing, and check the roof bows and top rails underneath while the panel is off. That inspection matters, because a roof that has been leaking has usually been dripping onto the top of a bow for a year, and there is corrosion up there that nobody has seen.

Side panel work follows the sheet and post logic used on any aluminum body. Damage between posts is contained to that bay, so we drill out the rivets, replace the panel, treat the post face, and re rivet with correct fasteners. The repair line lands on an existing rivet seam so it does not read as a patch. Wheel arch and lower panel corrosion gets cut out rather than covered, since the substrate behind it is what failed.

Rear doors, ramps and lift gate mounting on delivery bodies

Furniture and appliance delivery bodies almost always run a rear ramp, a lift gate or both. Ramps live in a stow channel under the body and get dragged across curbs, so the channel bends, the ramp stops sliding, and the hinge or the pull handle gets bent trying to force it. We straighten or replace the stow channel, rebuild the ramp structure and hinge, and repair the tread surface.

Rear frames on delivery bodies take residential damage rather than dock damage: a curb, a gate post, a low branch on a narrow street. The result is the same as a dock strike, a corner post out of plumb and a door that binds, and the repair sequence is the same. Post straightening first, header squared, then door track, rollers, hinges and seal.

Lift gate mounting plates crack at the corners and at the rail weld toe. On parcel bodies the gates are often lighter duty units where the crack starts earlier because the plate is thinner. We cut out and rebuild the plate with matched stock, gusset where the design allows, tie into the chassis rails, and refinish. Gate hydraulics, pumps and control wiring belong with your gate service supplier.

Interior shelving, E track and cargo restraint that actually holds

The most common interior failure we see on parcel and furniture bodies is restraint hardware pulling out of the wall. E track, logistics track, tie rails and shelving all get mounted with fasteners into the liner and, if you are lucky, into a post. Under a real load, fasteners in liner alone pull through and take a piece of the wall with them.

The durable fix is to move the load into the post structure. That means locating the posts, mounting track to them with correctly sized fasteners, adding backing plates where the post section is thin, and repairing the wallowed fastener holes left behind by the previous install rather than moving to a larger screw in the same hole.

Shelving and package racks get the same treatment. We fabricate and install racks, blanket bars, moving pad hangers and strap anchors in shop, mounted into structure with load spreading, then refinish where the install disturbed the interior. Where an operator is changing what they haul, we redesign the interior layout on the vehicle rather than working from a catalog drawing.

Identity graphics and fleet presentation on a last mile van

Delivery vans are the most visible vehicles in a West Covina neighborhood, and their appearance is part of how a carrier is judged at the door. That means the paint and graphics work has to be right, not just structurally sound. We refinish repaired panels with spray out verification and blend into the adjacent panels rather than stopping at a rivet seam.

It is the single most common structural failure on a walk in body, and it usually goes further than what you can see. Water and grit ride in on boots, sit in the well, and corrode the floor pan and the lower door frame from the top down. We cut out the affected pan and frame material, fabricate replacements, isolate the aluminum to steel joints properly, and coat both faces. Catching it before the frame goes keeps the job much smaller.

My translucent roof panel is cracked and leaking. Can it be patched?

Patching a translucent panel is a short term measure at best, because the material has embrittled from ultraviolet exposure across the whole panel and the next crack is already coming. Replacement is the right call. When the panel is off we inspect the roof bows and top rails underneath, which on a roof that has been leaking usually have corrosion nobody has seen. The perimeter seal is where the new panel succeeds or fails.

My E track pulled out of the wall. Can you just put bigger screws in?

No, and that is the repair we most often get called to redo. A fastener that pulled out has already damaged the material around the hole, so a larger screw in the same place lasts less time than the first one. We locate the post structure, mount the track into it with correctly sized fasteners and backing plates where the post section is thin, and repair the wallowed holes rather than reusing them.

Can you build custom shelving and blanket bars in a furniture body?
