Cabover or conventional: what changes in a medium duty repair
Cabover trucks like the Isuzu NPR, Hino 195 and Fuso FE put the cab directly over the front axle and tilt the whole cab forward for service. That geometry means the cab has no crush structure ahead of it, so even a low speed front hit loads the cab floor and the front cab mounts rather than a bumper beam. It also means every repair has to preserve the tilt function. A cab that has been pulled without checking hinge alignment will bind on the way up and crack the fiberglass at the hinge boss.
Conventional medium duties like the Freightliner M2 106, Hino 268, Ford F-650 and Chevrolet 5500HD behave more like a pickup at the front end. There is a hood, a real bumper structure and frame horns ahead of the cab. Front damage on those is a bumper, hood and grille support job most of the time, and the cab only becomes structural at higher energy. Hoods on the M2 are fiberglass and get repaired the same way heavy truck hoods do.
The practical difference for a West Covina operator is repair time. Cabover front damage tends to run longer because the cab is the structure. Conventional front damage tends to run shorter because the sacrificial parts are bolted on. Both are estimated on the floor with the cab tilted or the hood open so nothing hides.

Body to chassis mounting, sub frame and the U bolt line
Every medium duty carries an aftermarket body on a factory chassis, and the joint between the two is where a lot of complaints originate. Bodies are mounted with U bolts, brackets or a wood or steel sub frame that spreads the load across the rails. When those fasteners loosen, the body starts to walk. The symptom is a body that rocks visibly at the rear when the truck turns, a rub mark on the frame paint, and doors that suddenly stop lining up.
We check the entire mounting line on any truck in for body work: fastener torque, bracket condition, sub frame integrity, and whether anyone has drilled the frame rail flange, which is the single most common damaging modification we find. Rail flange drilling puts a stress riser exactly where the rail is loaded in bending, and cracks propagate from it. Repair means welding the hole closed with correct preparation, adding a doubler where the section allows, and moving the mounting to the web.
Wood sub frames on older units rot from the top down where water sits between the body floor and the frame. By the time it is visible from underneath, the section is gone. We replace sub frame members, refit brackets to a straight rail, and rebolt to spec. That work is often the difference between a body that lasts another five years and one that starts cracking at every corner.

Panel work on a medium duty cab: steel doors, plastic fascia and composite hoods
Medium duty cabs mix materials in a way that catches general shops out. Doors and cab shells are usually steel. Front fascias, grille surrounds and fender flares are injection molded plastic or fiberglass. Hoods on conventionals are fiberglass. Step boxes are frequently aluminum. Each of those wants a different repair method, a different adhesion promoter and a different flex additive in the finish coat, and using the wrong one is why cheap repairs on these trucks show cracking within a year.
Steel cab panels are repaired with conventional metal finishing: dents pulled or worked, panel sections cut and butt welded where a full skin is not available, corrosion cut out rather than filled, and epoxy primer over bare metal before any filler. Cab corners rust from the inside where the seam seal has failed, so cab corner repair almost always includes reopening and resealing the seam.
Plastic and composite parts are repaired with the correct backing material for the substrate, a two part adhesive rated for that plastic family, and a flexible primer surfacer. Fiberglass hood cracks get ground out to a V, backed with mat and resin where the underside is accessible, faired and refinished. On thin unsupported fascia sections we will tell you when replacement is genuinely more durable than repair rather than talking you into either one.
Rear body damage, lift gates and dock strikes on a medium duty
Medium duty box and van bodies live at loading docks, and the rear of the body takes the abuse. The classic sequence is a driver backing at a slight angle, catching the dock bumper with one rear corner, and bending the corner post inward a couple of inches. The door then binds halfway up. Straightening the corner post, squaring the header and resetting the door track is the actual fix. Forcing the door to work on a bent post destroys rollers and slats in a month.
Lift gate mounting plates on medium duty rear frames crack in a pattern. The load path from a Maxon or Tommy Gate platform arm concentrates at the plate corner and at the weld toe on the rail. Cracks start hairline and are visible only after washing. We cut out the cracked material, replace with matched plate stock, weld with proper preparation and preheat, gusset where the design allows, and refinish. Cylinders, pumps and gate wiring go back to your gate service supplier.
Rear bumpers and ICC bars are structural and they get repaired as structure, not straightened by eye. A bar that has been bent and pushed back changes the mounting geometry on the rail ends, so we replace or rebuild rather than heat and hammer. Rear light housings, wiring runs and license plate brackets are replaced at the same time, since they are usually crushed in the same event.

Scheduling a medium duty repair from West Covina

My Isuzu NPR cab will not tilt smoothly after a front hit. Is that structural?
Almost always, yes. On a cabover the cab is the front structure, so even a modest hit can move the front cab mounts and the hinge boss. When the cab binds or lifts unevenly, it means the mounting geometry has shifted. We measure the cab mounts, straighten or replace the affected structure, and verify the tilt through its full travel before any paint goes on. Repairing the visible panel alone leaves the bind in place.
The body on my medium duty rocks at the rear when I turn. What is happening?
That is body to chassis mounting. U bolts, brackets or the sub frame have loosened or the sub frame itself has deteriorated, and the body is moving relative to the rails. It gets worse quickly because every movement wears the mounting surfaces. We pull the mounting apart, check the sub frame and the rail flange for cracking or previous drilling, replace what is gone, square the body and retorque. Catching it early is a much shorter job.
Can you match the color on a ten year old fleet white cab?
Yes, but not by code alone. A decade of sun in the San Gabriel Valley moves white further than most people expect, especially on the horizontal surfaces. We spray out cards, check them against the actual cab under shop lighting and in daylight, adjust the mix, and then blend into the adjacent panels rather than cutting a hard edge at a seam. That blend is what makes a repaired door disappear next to an original one.
Do you work on the hydraulics or the electrical side of a lift gate?
We handle the structural mounting: the plate, the rail reinforcement, cracked welds and gussets, plus mounting a gate to a properly prepared rear frame. Pumps, cylinders, solenoids and gate control wiring belong with your lift gate service supplier. Tell us at the estimate which parts you want us to carry so the scope is clear before the truck is torn down.
Do you do brake, engine or DOT inspection work on medium duty trucks?
No. OCRV Center is a body, paint, fiberglass and structural shop. We do not perform engine, drivetrain, transmission or brake work on commercial trucks, and we do not issue DOT inspections. Those stay with your dealer or fleet maintenance provider. What we do is everything on the outside and the structure: collision, panel work, body mounting, glass, equipment mounting, paint and graphics.
