Why a curtain side is a structure problem, not a curtain problem
The complaint that brings most curtain side bodies to a shop is that the curtain will not slide, will not tension, or will not close at the rear. In almost every case the curtain is fine and the frame it rides in is not. A curtain side body is a rigid rectangle with a fabric side, and everything about how the curtain behaves depends on the top rail, the bottom rail and the rear frame being straight and square relative to each other.
So the diagnosis starts with measurement. We check the top rail for bow and twist along its length, check the bottom rail for the same, check the rear frame for square, and check that the two rails are parallel in both planes. A body that has been loaded heavy on one side for years will have a top rail that has crept, and that alone will make a curtain drag at the same point every time.
The repair follows the measurement. Rails are straightened where the section allows, sections are cut out and let in where they are kinked or torn, roof bows are straightened or replaced, and the whole box is squared before the curtain track hardware goes back on. Curtain fabric, buckles and straps are replaced afterward, and the fabric itself goes to a canvas supplier while everything structural stays with us.

Sliding posts, buckles and tensioning hardware
Sliding posts carry the load restraint on most curtain side bodies, and they take a beating from forklifts working into the side of the body. A post that has been struck bends at the mid span and no longer runs in the top track, and the bottom locating pin stops engaging the deck socket. Operators tend to work around it by not using that post, which pushes more load into the neighbors.
We straighten or replace posts, rebuild the top slider and the bottom locating hardware, and repair the deck sockets. Deck sockets tear out of the deck edge exactly the way stake pockets do on a flatbed, so the repair is the same: cut out the damaged material, let in sound stock, weld a new socket into it, coat and refinish. Plating over a torn socket does not last.
Curtain tensioning ratchets mount to the bottom rail and they get pulled hard every single load cycle. When the rail material at a ratchet mount fatigues, the mount tears out and takes a piece of the rail with it. We rebuild the rail section, install backing that spreads the ratchet load along the rail rather than concentrating it at one fastener, and coat before final assembly.
Rear frames, doors and lift gates on curtain side delivery bodies
Many West Covina curtain side units are delivery trucks with barn doors or a roll up at the rear and a lift gate hanging off the rear frame. That combination puts a lot of concentrated load into the back of a body whose sides are fabric, so the rear frame is doing structural work that a dry van rear frame shares with the walls.
That is why rear frame damage on a curtain side matters more. A bent rear post on a box truck jams a door. A bent rear post on a curtain side pulls the whole rear frame out of square and the curtain will not close and tension at the rear corner. We straighten or replace corner posts and header sections, square the frame, and reset the door and curtain hardware to the corrected frame.
Lift gate mounting plates on a curtain side rear frame need particular attention because there is less body structure around them. Cracks at the plate corner and at the weld toe get cut out and rebuilt with matched plate, tied into the chassis rails rather than into the body frame alone, and gusseted where the design allows. Gate hydraulics and controls remain with your gate equipment supplier.

Deck, floor and internal load restraint on a curtain side body
Curtain side floors take a specific pattern of wear. Load restraint gates and internal partitions drag on the deck, forklift tines contact the deck edge every load, and pallet jacks wear a track down the center line. Hardwood floors split at the fastener line and steel decks dish where forks land in the same place daily.
We replace floor sections, reset screed rails and threshold plates, and rebuild the deck edge where forks have chewed it. Deck edge rebuild is important beyond looks, because the deck edge is also where the bottom rail attaches and where the sliding post sockets live. A ragged deck edge means posts that never seat properly.
Internal load restraint systems, whether they are gates on tracks, horizontal load bars or vertical partitions, all mount into the body structure. When they tear out they take structure with them. We rebuild track mounting into the top and bottom rails with load spreading backing, repair and straighten the gates themselves, and replace hardware. Custom fabrication of new restraint layouts happens in shop when an operator changes what they haul.
Refinishing and graphics on a curtain side unit
A curtain side body presents mostly fabric to the world, so the metal that shows, the rails, the posts, the front bulkhead, the rear frame and the underbody, has to look right or the whole unit looks tired. Those parts also live in a wet and abrasive environment. We prepare back to sound substrate, treat, prime with an epoxy or direct to metal primer, and topcoat with a hardened industrial finish.
Bottom rails deserve extra attention. Water and road film collect along the deck edge, sit in the rail section, and corrode from the inside. When rail sections come off during a repair, treating and coating the internal surfaces is worth the extra hour, because that is the surface that decides how many more years the rail has.
Graphics on a curtain side are split between the curtain and the metal. Printed curtains are a canvas and print supplier item. Unit numbers, lettering, reflective conspicuity tape and any decal on the bulkhead, rear frame or rails are installed here after refinish, to the same placement measurements recorded before the parts came off.

The curtain on my truck drags at the same spot every time. Is the curtain stretched?
Almost never. A curtain that drags at a consistent point is telling you the top rail is bowed or twisted at that point, or the rails are no longer parallel. We measure the top rail, the bottom rail and the rear frame for bow, twist and square before touching the curtain hardware. Once the frame is straight the curtain usually runs correctly on the original track hardware.
A forklift bent one of my sliding posts. Can it be straightened?
Sometimes. A post with a gentle bend and no kink or tear straightens well and goes back into service. A post that is kinked, torn at the slider, or bent at the bottom locating pin gets replaced, because a straightened kink is a weak point that will fold again on the next contact. The deck socket it seats into usually needs repair too, since the same impact peels the socket out of the deck edge.
Can you repair the curtain fabric itself?
No. Curtain fabric, buckles, straps and printed curtain graphics are canvas and print supplier work. What we handle is everything the curtain runs on and everything holding the body together: top and bottom rails, roof bows, sliding posts, deck sockets, tensioning mounts, rear frame, bulkhead, deck and floor, plus paint on all of it. Most operators do the structural work here and reorder the curtain in parallel.
My lift gate plate is cracked on a curtain side body. Is that different from a box truck?
It matters more. On a curtain side there is less body structure surrounding the rear frame, so the gate load concentrates in a smaller area. We cut out the cracked plate material, rebuild with matched stock, and tie the mounting into the chassis rails rather than relying on the body frame alone, with gusseting where the design allows. Gate hydraulics and controls stay with your equipment supplier.
