Deck replacement: apitong, laminated hardwood, steel and aluminum
Deck material choice drives everything about a flatbed rebuild. Apitong is the traditional hardwood for a reason: it is dense, it takes fastener load without splitting, and it wears predictably. It also cups and checks with age, and it holds water at the fastener when the coating goes. Laminated composite decking is more dimensionally stable and costs more. Steel deck resists point loading from equipment tracks and forks but rusts anywhere the coating gets scraped. Aluminum saves weight and is the least forgiving of concentrated loads.
We replace deck in full or in sections depending on what is sound. Replacing three boards in the middle of an otherwise good apitong deck is legitimate work and it is what most operators want. Replacing three boards in a deck where the rest is checked and soft is throwing money at a floor that will need doing again next year, and we will tell you that at the estimate rather than after.
Fastener strategy is part of the job. Countersunk carriage bolts through the crossmember, correctly torqued, with the head below the wear surface, is what keeps a deck flat. Deck screws driven into a soft crossmember will back out and the board will start to drum. Where the crossmember itself is soft or corroded, the crossmember gets addressed before the new deck goes down.

Stake pockets, rub rails and tie down anchors
Stake pockets tear because straps and chains rarely load them the way the designer intended. A chain pulled at an angle across the pocket lip peels the pocket outward from the rail, and once the weld or the rail material at the pocket is torn, the pocket has no strength left. Plating over a torn pocket looks like a repair and is not, because the plate is only as good as the torn rail material it is welded to.
The correct repair is to cut out the damaged rail section around the pocket, let in new stock of the same or heavier section, weld it in with full preparation, and install a new pocket welded to sound material. On rails where several pockets in a row are gone, replacing the whole rail section is faster and stronger than repairing them one at a time.
Rub rails and D ring anchors follow the same logic. A D ring that has pulled through has taken rail material with it, and it needs a backing plate distributing the load rather than a bigger washer. We fabricate backing and gusseting in shop, weld it into the rail structure, coat it, and refinish. Winch tracks and sliding winches get their track rechecked for straightness at the same time, because a bent track means the winch binds and the operator stops using it.
Bowed side rails, headboards and crossmember sag
A bowed rail is a symptom. Something loaded the rail outward, and the load path went through the crossmembers under the deck to get there. So the repair sequence is to check deck square and crossmember condition first, straighten the rail second, and verify square again afterward. Straightening a rail on a bed whose crossmembers have shifted just moves the problem.
Straightening is done cold where the section allows. Where the bend is sharp or the section is heavy, controlled heat is used with the temperature watched, because overheating structural steel changes its properties permanently and leaves you with a straight rail that is weaker than the bent one was. Sections with kinks, tears or previous bad repairs get cut out and replaced rather than pulled.
Headboards and bulkheads bend forward from a load shift under hard braking, and they bend at the base where they tie into the deck. That mounting is the repair. We rebuild the base structure, gusset it into the frame or the deck structure rather than into the deck boards, and straighten or replace the upright. Where the headboard also carries a rack, ladder holders or a tarp box, those mounts are rebuilt at the same time.

Tarp systems, load racks and custom flatbed fabrication
Roll tarp and side kit systems only work on a straight bed. When a rail bows or a bow tube bends, the tarp binds, the operator forces it, and the next thing that breaks is the crank assembly or the rail itself. We straighten or replace tarp rails, replace bent bows, repair housing structure and reset the system so it tracks. The tarp material itself is a canvas shop item, but everything the tarp runs on is metal work and belongs here.
Custom fabrication on flatbeds is constant. Operators want a headache rack sized to their actual load, a toolbox that mounts under the rail without eating deck space, pipe racks, ladder racks, cone holders, a spare tire carrier that does not foul the tie downs, or a dunnage rack that folds. We measure on the bed, draw it, get your approval, build it in steel or aluminum, coat it and install it.
The rule on all of it is that the load goes into structure. Mounting a rack to the deck boards or to the rail flange is what causes the tear outs we repair later. Mounts go into the crossmembers, the rail web or the chassis frame, with backing plates that spread load. Coating goes on before install so the bracket footprint is not a bare steel corrosion cell.
Refinishing and corrosion control on a working flatbed
A flatbed lives a harder surface life than any other body we work on. Chains drag on it, forks scrape it, loads slide across it, and it sits in the weather with no cover. So the finish system has to be chosen for abrasion and coating adhesion rather than for gloss. Beds get stripped or abraded back to sound substrate, treated, primed with an epoxy or DTM primer, and topcoated in a hardened industrial finish or a textured coating where abrasion is the issue.
Undersides matter more than the top. Water sits on the top flange of the crossmembers, and that is where the corrosion that eventually collapses a deck starts. When a deck comes off for replacement we get the only good access anyone will ever have to those surfaces, so cleaning, treating and coating the crossmembers during a deck job is the highest value hour on the whole invoice.
Color and fleet identity go on afterward. Unit numbers, company lettering and reflective tape on the rear and side get replaced to original placement. Where a bed is being refreshed rather than repaired, we can shoot it in a fleet color so an older bed matches newer units, which for West Covina contractors running mixed age equipment is often the point of the whole job.

How many deck boards can I replace before I should just redeck the whole bed?
The practical line is about a third. Below that, replacing damaged boards in an otherwise sound apitong deck is good value and the new boards blend in within a season. Above that, or where the remaining boards are checked, cupped or soft at the fasteners, a full redeck costs less than doing it twice. We walk the deck with you, tap the boards, and give you a straight read on which side of that line you are on.
A stake pocket ripped out of my rail. Can it just be welded back on?
Not durably. When a pocket tears out it takes rail material with it, so welding the pocket back is welding to metal that already failed. The repair that lasts is cutting the damaged rail section out, letting in new stock, and welding a new pocket to sound material. If several pockets in a row are gone, replacing that whole rail section is faster and ends up stronger than repairing each one.
Can you build a custom headache rack for my flatbed?
Yes. We measure on your bed, draw the design, get your approval on dimensions and material, then build it in steel or aluminum, coat it and install it. The important part is where it mounts. Racks that bolt to deck boards or to the rail flange tear out. We tie the load into the crossmembers or the chassis frame with backing plates that spread it. Fabrication and finishing happen under the same roof.
My roll tarp binds halfway across. Is the tarp the problem?
Usually not. Binding almost always means the rail the tarp runs on is bent or a bow tube is out of shape, so the system no longer tracks straight. Forcing it damages the crank assembly next. We straighten or replace the rails and bows, repair the housing structure, and reset the system so it runs. The tarp fabric itself goes to a canvas shop, but everything metal it rides on is our work.
Do you coat the underside of the bed when you redeck it?
We recommend it every time, because a deck replacement is the only moment anyone gets clean access to the top of the crossmembers. That surface is where water sits and where the corrosion that eventually costs you the bed begins. Cleaning, treating and coating those members while the deck is off adds a modest amount to the job and adds years to the structure. It is the best value hour on a redeck invoice.
