Why RV and van headlights yellow in the first place

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is tough and light and it does not shatter, which is why it replaced glass. What it is not is ultraviolet stable. Left unprotected it yellows and clouds quickly, so manufacturers apply a hard ultraviolet resistant coating to the outer face at the factory.

That coating is what fails, not the plastic underneath. It degrades from ultraviolet exposure, road debris impact and washing chemicals, and it fails unevenly, which is why a lens goes patchy before it goes uniformly yellow. Once the coating has broken down, the polycarbonate underneath begins oxidizing directly and the haze moves into the material itself.

RVs and work vehicles get it worse than most cars for a simple reason: they sit outdoors. A commuter car spends nights in a garage. A motorhome stored beside a house in Woodside Village or parked in a yard sits in full sun for months at a time, often with the nose pointed the same direction the whole while, which is why one lens is frequently worse than the other. Vehicles that spend years parked are the ones we see with the most severe crazing.

Consumer restoration kits generally clean and polish the surface, then apply a thin protectant. On lightly hazed lenses that produces a real improvement for a few months. On a lens with a failed factory coating and oxidation in the plastic, it removes very little material and the haze returns as soon as the protectant wears, which is usually one summer.

The durable approach removes the failed coating entirely. That means wet sanding through progressive grits, starting coarse enough to cut off the degraded layer and stepping finer through several stages until the scratch pattern is fine enough to polish out. Each grit has to fully remove the scratches from the grit before it, which is the step people skip and why home attempts end up permanently cloudy.

After sanding, the lens is machine polished with a plastic specific compound until it is optically clear. At this point the lens looks perfect and it is completely unprotected, which is the exact state the factory lens was in before it got its coating. Stopping here is why some quick restorations yellow again within a year. The coating step is not optional.

The coating step that decides how long the work lasts

What goes on the lens after polishing determines whether the restoration lasts one season or several years. A wax or a spray protectant is the shortest lived. A dedicated ultraviolet blocking clear coat formulated for polycarbonate is the standard, and it is what we apply. Some lenses also take a ceramic style coating over the top for additional durability.

Application matters as much as product. The lens has to be completely clean with no polishing residue left on it, masked precisely so the coating edge lands where it should, and coated in a controlled environment rather than in a windy parking lot where dust lands in the wet film. Coating a lens outdoors is how you get a clear lens with grit permanently suspended in it.

Cure time is the last variable. Most lens coatings need a period before the vehicle sees weather or washing. We schedule headlight work so the coating cures in the building rather than sending a vehicle out an hour after application. It is a small detail that separates a restoration that holds up from one that starts hazing at the edges within months.

When a lens should be replaced instead of restored

Restoration works on surface degradation. It does not fix damage that has gone into or behind the lens. Crazing, which is a network of fine cracks in the polycarbonate itself, cannot be sanded out because the cracks run deeper than any material you can safely remove. A lens with real crazing will look better after restoration and will still show the pattern.

Internal problems are the other category. Moisture inside the housing means a seal has failed, and polishing the outside does nothing about the fogging on the inside. A reflector that has gone dull or has started to flake is a housing replacement, since the reflective surface is what actually aims and projects the light. Deep impact cracks, chips through the lens face, and mounting tab damage all point the same direction.

On motorhomes there is an additional consideration: many coaches use automotive lamp assemblies from a specific chassis year, and some use RV specific units that are harder to source. If a lens is genuinely past restoration we will tell you and help identify what the replacement is, but restoration is very often the better economic answer on a coach where the assembly is expensive or no longer produced.

  • On coaches with discontinued assemblies, restoration is often the practical answer

Combining headlight work with other reconditioning

Headlight restoration is a short job on its own and it is most efficient bundled with other work. Owners bringing a coach in for a full detail, an oxidation removal or paint work almost always add it, because the vehicle is already in the building and the lenses are already masked off during other stages.

There is a visual reason to bundle too. A restored, glossy front cap with amber lenses in the middle of it draws the eye straight to the lenses. Doing both at once is what makes the front of the vehicle read as new rather than as a fresh polish job around old plastic. The same applies to fog lamps, marker lenses and any other clouded polycarbonate on the front.

For owners selling a unit, this is one of the least expensive items with the most visible payoff. Yellowed headlights read as age in every photograph of the front of a vehicle. On the practical side, restored lenses genuinely improve night light output, which matters on the unlit stretches you meet driving out to the desert or up the 15 after dark.

How long does restored headlight clarity actually last?

With the failed coating fully sanded off and a proper ultraviolet blocking clear applied and cured, expect several years on a vehicle that lives outdoors in inland Southern California, longer on one that is covered or garaged. What fails early is a restoration where the lens was polished but never recoated, since bare polycarbonate begins yellowing again almost immediately.

Can you restore headlights on a Class A motorhome with large assemblies?

Yes. Large coach headlight assemblies are the same polycarbonate as automotive lenses, just bigger, and the process is identical. The larger surface takes more sanding and polishing time, which is reflected in the estimate. On coaches where the assemblies are expensive or discontinued, restoration is usually the far better economic choice compared to sourcing replacements.

Why did the kit I bought stop working after a few months?

Most consumer kits polish the surface and add a light protectant without removing the failed factory coating and the oxidized layer of plastic underneath. That produces a real improvement that lasts until the protectant wears off, at which point the underlying degradation is still there. The durable version requires progressive wet sanding to remove that material, then a dedicated coating that cures properly.

Will restoration fix fogging on the inside of my headlight?

No. Internal fogging means moisture is getting into the housing through a failed seal, a cracked housing or a bad vent, and everything we do happens on the outside of the lens. We will restore the exterior and tell you what we see, but the actual fix is sealing or replacing the housing. Restoring the outside of a lens with water sitting behind it is not a result anyone is happy with.

Can headlight restoration be done while my RV is in for other work?

Yes, and that is how most of it gets scheduled. It fits easily alongside a full detail, an oxidation removal or body and paint work since the vehicle is already here. Bundling it costs less than a separate visit and produces a better looking front end than doing either job alone. Mention it when you book and the estimator will include it.
