What oxidation is and why gelcoat behaves differently than paint

Gelcoat is a pigmented resin layer sprayed into the mold before the fiberglass laminate is laid up. It is far thicker than automotive clearcoat, which is why it can be restored so aggressively. Oxidation in gelcoat is the resin binder at the surface breaking down under ultraviolet exposure and releasing pigment particles. That loose pigment is the chalk that comes off on your hand.

Because the failure is at the surface and the material underneath is sound, the repair is mechanical: cut the degraded layer away and expose fresh resin. That is why a coach that looks hopeless can come back dramatically. The limit is how much gelcoat is left, and on a vehicle that has been compounded several times before there may not be much.

Painted surfaces fail differently. Clearcoat is thin, and once it begins to delaminate or check, cutting into it removes the only ultraviolet protection the base color has. Compounding failing clear buys you a few months of gloss and then the finish peels. Telling gelcoat from paint, and sound clear from failing clear, is the first thing our detail lead does, because the entire plan depends on it.

The chalk test and deciding whether a finish can be saved

The assessment is hands on. Wipe a clean hand across a dry panel: heavy pigment transfer means active oxidation with material to remove. Then look at the surface under strong light at a low angle, which shows whether the dullness is uniform oxidation or a pattern of scratches and holograms from a previous buff, because those need different correction.

Next we check for clear coat over the gelcoat, which many coaches have on their painted graphics and full body paint areas. A finish that has clear failing in patches is not a candidate for aggressive compounding no matter how good the rest looks. We also check the areas that matter most: the roof cap, the top of the driver side, and the tops of slide fascias, since those take the worst exposure and set the ceiling on what the whole vehicle can achieve.

Then we run a test section, usually two feet square, in a representative area. That tells us how many stages the job needs and what the realistic end result is. Showing an owner a corrected square next to the untouched panel is the most honest estimate we can give, and it occasionally leads to a different recommendation entirely, which is that the vehicle is better served by paint than by polish.

Compounding stages, pad selection and heat control on large panels

Heavy oxidation removal is a multi stage process. Stage one is an aggressive cut, typically a wool or heavy foam cutting pad with a compound sized to the severity, and it does the actual removal of degraded material. That stage leaves its own scratch pattern behind. Stage two polishes that pattern out with a finer pad and abrasive. On coaches where the owner wants maximum gloss, a third finishing stage refines it further.

Panel geometry drives pad choice more than most people expect. Large flat sidewalls take a big pad and let the machine do the work. Curved caps, corner radii, the edges around baggage doors and the raised body lines on slide fascias all concentrate pressure on a small contact area. Those get taped off, hand worked, or done with a small pad at reduced speed, because burning through gelcoat at an edge takes seconds and the repair is paint.

Heat management is the other half. A dark sidewall in a warm bay heats fast under a rotary, and heat causes compound to gum, pads to load, and the surface to burn. Working indoors at Yorba Linda gives us panel temperature control that outdoor work simply does not have. We work in sections, clean or change pads constantly, and check panel temperature by hand rather than by feel of the machine.

When gelcoat is too far gone and paint is the right answer

There is a point where compounding stops making sense. If previous restorations have already cut the gelcoat thin, aggressive work exposes the fiberglass weave underneath, which shows as a fibrous pattern that cannot be polished out. If the chalking has gone deep enough that the color underneath has permanently shifted, restoring the gloss just gives you a shiny wrong color.

Print through is another sign. That is where the pattern of the underlying laminate shows in the surface, and it means there is not much gelcoat left standing between the world and the glass. Compounding through print through is how a restoration turns into a fiberglass repair.

Uneven fade is the most frustrating case. A coach that has been parked with one side to the afternoon sun for a decade can restore beautifully on the shaded side and only partway on the sun side, leaving a vehicle that looks two toned. Sometimes the right recommendation is to restore the good surfaces and refinish the failed ones. We make that call with you at the test section stage rather than after the job.

Protecting a restored finish so it does not chalk again

A freshly restored gelcoat surface is bare, unprotected resin. Left alone in inland Southern California it begins oxidizing again immediately, and within a season or two the owner is back where they started. Protection is not an upsell on this job, it is the part that makes the work last.

Options run from a synthetic sealant, which is straightforward and lasts a number of months, to a wax, which looks excellent and lasts the least, to a ceramic coating, which bonds to the surface and offers the longest protection and by far the easiest maintenance washing. On a vehicle with the surface area of an RV, easy washing is worth real money over time, which is why most owners who restore a coach choose a coating.

Maintenance after that is straightforward. Wash with pH neutral soap, avoid abrasive brushes at truck washes, rinse sprinkler overspray off promptly rather than letting it bake, and keep the roof clean so runoff does not streak the sides. Owners who store a coach outdoors year round in the San Gabriel Valley get noticeably longer life from a cover or a shade structure, and it is the cheapest protection available.

My motorhome sidewall leaves chalk on my hand. Can that be fixed?

That is textbook gelcoat oxidation and it is one of the more rewarding jobs we do. The chalk is degraded resin and loose pigment sitting on sound material underneath. Multi stage compounding cuts through the degraded layer to fresh gelcoat, polishing refines it, and protection keeps it there. The one thing that limits the result is how much gelcoat remains, which we check with a test section before quoting the full vehicle.

How many stages of compounding does heavy oxidation need?

Most heavily oxidized coaches need two stages: a cutting compound to remove the degraded resin and a polish to remove the haze the compound leaves behind. Severe cases with deep chalking take three. The test section tells us. More stages means more hours, which is the main reason the price range on this page is wide, so we set that expectation before authorization rather than after.

Will oxidation come back after restoration?

Bare gelcoat starts oxidizing again as soon as it is exposed, so protection is part of the job rather than an option. A synthetic sealant lasts months, a ceramic coating lasts considerably longer and makes maintenance washing much easier on a vehicle this size. Beyond that, the biggest variables are whether the coach lives outdoors uncovered and whether sprinkler overspray is allowed to bake on.

Can you restore faded decals and stripes along with the gelcoat?

Compounding will bring gloss back to a decal that is still intact, but it does not restore color to vinyl that has faded, and aggressive work will cut straight through an old decal edge. Decals that are cracked, curling or ghosting need replacement rather than restoration. We tape and work around decals during correction and tell you honestly which ones are past saving.

Is oxidation removal worth doing on a coach I plan to sell?

Usually it is one of the highest return items you can do. A chalked, gray looking coach reads as neglected in listing photos regardless of how sound it is mechanically, and buyers assume the rest of the maintenance matched the paint. Restoration changes the first impression completely. Sequence it after any body or roof work and before the photographs.
