What we see most

Common damage on standard fifth wheels

These are the failures that come through the door on this vehicle type over and over.

Hairline cracks radiating from pin box gussets after high mileage towing

Crown seam sealant shrinkage letting water into the front cap at speed

Front wall delamination that bubbles once the afternoon sun heats the cap

Schwintek slide rooms losing sync and racking in the opening

Bulb seals taking a compression set and letting water track the wall cavity

Roof to sidewall molding beads opening along both sides

Landing gear legs binding after being loaded on an uneven pad

Rear cap radius crazing and stress cracks around the ladder mount

Corner molding sealant failure at the vertical seams

Examples we work on: Keystone Cougar, Keystone Montana High Country, Grand Design Reflection, Jayco Eagle, Forest River Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite, Heartland Big Country, Coachmen Chaparral, Alliance RV Avenue, Winnebago Voyage.

What a standard fifth wheel is built from and why that matters

A mainstream fifth wheel in the twenty eight to thirty eight foot range is a laminated box on a formed steel chassis. The sidewalls are a fiberglass or filon skin bonded to a substrate, usually luan plywood on older units and azdel composite on newer ones, over aluminum tube framing with block foam filling the bays. The roof is a single sheet of EPDM or TPO over decking. The front and rear caps are molded fiberglass, painted or gel coated with a graphics package.

That construction is light, quiet and efficient. It is also a bonded assembly, which means the strength depends on the bond staying intact. When water reaches the substrate, the bond releases and the panel stops carrying load. This is why we treat a soft spot as a structural finding rather than a cosmetic one, and why a repair that skips the substrate and only reskins the outside will show the same failure again within a couple of seasons.

Owners in West Covina get an extra variable. Coaches parked on a driveway in South Hills or Woodside Village sit in direct sun most of the year with very little rain to reveal a leak. The ultraviolet load ages the sealant far faster than the moisture load reveals the damage. By the time a winter storm shows you a stain, the seam has usually been open through an entire dry summer.

  • Laminated sidewall: fiberglass or filon skin, luan or azdel substrate, aluminum framing, block foam
  • Membrane roof over decking, with every rooftop appliance forming a sealed penetration
  • Molded fiberglass front and rear caps with graphics under clear
  • Formed steel chassis with welded crossmembers and outriggers

Structural repair at the front of a standard fifth wheel

When a standard fifth wheel comes in for structural evaluation, the front section gets supported before anything is disassembled. The trailer goes on stands, the weight comes off the landing gear, and the frame gets measured for square and for level across the leading crossmember. That baseline matters, because welding a cracked joint while the structure is distorted just locks the distortion in.

Common findings on this class are cracking at the pin box gussets, cracking where the leading crossmember meets the rails, and elongated holes on adjustable or air ride pin boxes that have been working against their mounting plates. Repair is grind, vee, weld with the right process for the base metal, then reinforce with correctly sized plate or gusset. Where the frame section itself has torn, we section in new material rather than plating over a tear and hoping.

Interior evidence is worth telling the estimator about. Cabinet doors in the bedroom that suddenly need a push, a bathroom door that binds at the top corner, or a slide that used to seal flat and now leaves a gap at one end all point to the front section moving. Those symptoms often show up before there is anything visible from underneath.

Fiberglass and paint work on caps, sidewalls and slide fascia

Front cap repair on a standard fifth wheel is a laminate job followed by a paint job, and the paint is usually the longer half. Stress crazing gets ground back to sound material, the laminate is rebuilt with matched cloth and resin in stepped layers, then faired, primed and blocked until the surface reads flat under a guide coat. Only then does color go on. A repair that is not blocked properly will telegraph a shadow every time the sun hits it at a low angle.

Graphics complicate the color work. Most fifth wheels leave the factory with a printed vinyl or a sprayed graphic under clear, and matching a swoosh across a repaired panel means either sourcing the original decal, reproducing the graphic, or repainting to a break line. Our estimator will tell you at the appointment which of those three the damage forces, because it changes both time and appearance.

Sidewall delamination is repaired by relieving the trapped air and moisture, injecting adhesive into the void under controlled pressure, and clamping the panel flat with vacuum or with a caul while it cures. That works when the substrate is intact. When the substrate has gone to pulp, the skin comes off, the wet material is cut out, new substrate goes in, and the skin gets rebonded and refinished.

  • Stepped laminate repair rather than a surface skim over a crack
  • Guide coat blocking so a repair does not print through in low sun
  • Graphics matched, reproduced or broken at a natural line depending on the damage
  • Delamination injected and clamped when the substrate is sound, replaced when it is not

Slides, seals and the systems inside a standard coach

Most standard fifth wheels run two to four slide rooms. The living room slide is often a large hydraulic or through frame unit, while the bedroom and kitchen rooms are frequently Schwintek In Wall. Repair starts with a diagnosis of which system you actually have, because the same symptom of a room that will not seal has a different cause on a rack and pinion room than on a cable driven one.

Seal work is the most common slide job we do. A bulb seal that has taken a set no longer rebounds when the room comes in, so it leaves a channel for water to run down inside the wall. Wiper seals get hard and tear at the corners, and once a corner is torn, wind driven rain gets under the wiper on the road. We replace seals as a set on a room rather than one strip at a time, because a new seal against three old ones just moves the leak.

Beyond the slides, standard coaches carry the systems everyone else does: a converter or inverter, a twelve volt distribution panel, an absorption or residential refrigerator, a water heater, a furnace and roof air. We handle electrical, plumbing, appliance and generator work at the shop as part of a repair or on its own. Systems estimates are a paid diagnostic that gets credited against authorized repair work.

Bringing a standard fifth wheel in from West Covina

The shop is in Yorba Linda, not in West Covina, and the drive is about 22 miles. Most owners come down the 57 from the 10 or the 60 and then run the 91 east to Imperial Highway. If you store the trailer at a lot near the 605 or off Azusa Avenue, factor the pickup into your day, and if the coach has been sitting, check tire pressures and the date codes before you hook up. Sidewall cracking from years of Southern California sun causes more trailer tire failures than tread wear does.

Drop off happens Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or Saturday 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. The estimator will walk the coach with you, and the more history you can give, the better the estimate. Tell us when the leak first appeared, whether the slide has been forced, what previous shops did and whether any sealant was applied over the original. Buried sealant changes the teardown plan.

Call (949) 799-3387 to book the walkthrough. Collision estimates are written at the shop, and insurance walk ins are welcome during those hours. All work is performed in the building at Yorba Linda.

Questions we get asked

Is a soft spot in a fifth wheel sidewall always delamination?

Not always, but it is the most likely explanation. A soft spot means the skin has released from the substrate underneath, and the usual cause is moisture that reached the bond line through a seam, a window frame or a screw penetration. Occasionally the cause is impact damage that broke the bond without breaking the skin. Either way the fix requires knowing whether the substrate is still sound. If it is, adhesive injection and clamping restores the panel. If it has gone soft, the skin comes off and material gets replaced.

Why does my fifth wheel leak only when I am towing and never when it is parked?

Because water at speed does not behave the way water at rest does. A hairline gap at the crown seam or along a roof to sidewall molding sheds rain harmlessly when the trailer is sitting, but at highway speed the airflow drives water sideways and upward into the same gap. That is why so many owners find a wet ceiling after a trip and nothing after a storm at home. It also means the seam is already open and should be addressed before the substrate is affected.

Can you match the graphics on a ten year old fifth wheel?

Often, though not always with the original part. Some manufacturers still supply decal kits for older model years, and when they do, we install the correct kit. When the decal is discontinued, the options are reproducing the graphic from photographs and measurements, or repainting the affected panel to a natural break line so the repair reads as intentional. The estimator will show you which approach the damage allows before any work starts.

How much of my fifth wheel has to come apart for a frame weld?

Less than owners expect at the rear and more than they expect at the front. A crossmember or outrigger crack under the belly is usually reached by dropping the coroplast underbelly and any insulation in that bay. Cracking around the pin box often requires pulling the front bay contents, sometimes the bay floor, and occasionally opening the front interior wall to reach the backside of a joint. The estimator will tell you the disassembly plan before the work is authorized.

Do I need to empty the fresh water and holding tanks before I bring it in?

Drain and dump before you come. Water adds weight where we may need to support the frame, holding tank contents become a problem the moment a bay has to open, and a full fresh tank changes how the trailer sits on stands. If plumbing work is part of the job, empty tanks also let us pressure test properly. Leave the propane bottles connected unless we tell you otherwise, and tell the estimator if the coach has an aftermarket inverter or lithium bank.
