Double hull construction and what it means for access

Oliver trailers use a molded fiberglass outer hull and a separate molded inner hull, with the space between them carrying insulation and systems. That construction is why they last and it is also why repair access is different.

Reaching the back side of an outer hull panel is not a matter of pulling an interior wall panel the way it would be on a conventional trailer. The inner hull is a structure rather than a finish surface.

That does not make repairs difficult, it makes them require planning. We work out the access approach before starting rather than improvising it once the trailer is open.

Molded fiberglass repairs well and forever

A molded hull can be rebuilt indefinitely. Damage is cut back to sound laminate and relaminated to match, with no expiration on the process.

That is why these trailers are worth maintaining at ages where a conventional laminated sidewall trailer would be finished. There is no substrate to rot and no wall cavity to fill with water.

Gelcoat crazing on the outer surface is cosmetic rather than structural in most cases, and it is correctable. Distinguishing crazing from a crack that has reached laminate is the diagnostic step that determines scope.

Owners who keep these trailers a long time

Oliver owners generally intend to keep the trailer, which changes what a good repair looks like. The durable answer is usually the right one rather than the fast one.

It also means cosmetic standards are higher than on a trailer someone plans to trade. A gelcoat repair that is visible in raking light is a problem here in a way it would not be elsewhere.

We scope accordingly and tell you plainly what each level of finish costs, so the choice is yours rather than assumed.

Questions we get asked

Is gelcoat crazing on my Oliver a structural problem

Usually not. On a molded hull, surface crazing is generally cosmetic and correctable. What matters is distinguishing crazing from a crack that has reached laminate, and that is the diagnostic step that determines the scope. The two look similar and are corrected very differently.

Does double hull construction make repairs harder

It makes them require planning rather than making them difficult. The inner hull is a structure, not a finish panel you pull off to reach the back of the outer hull. We work out the access approach before starting rather than improvising once the trailer is open.

How long can a molded fiberglass trailer last

Effectively indefinitely, as far as the hull goes. Damage is cut back to sound laminate and relaminated with no expiration on the process, and there is no wood substrate to rot or wall cavity to fill with water. That is why these are worth maintaining at ages where a conventional trailer would be finished.
