How an A frame camper is supposed to close and why it stops
An A frame camper is a box with two large hard panels hinged at the top of the side walls. Raised, they meet at a ridge and form the roof, and the whole camper becomes a rigid structure. Folded, they lie flat on the box for towing. The design is elegant because it gives hard walls, real insulation and no fabric, and it is demanding because the entire weather seal depends on two panels meeting precisely along a line every single time.
The geometry is what makes it work. Each panel rotates about a hinge axis, and if both axes are true and parallel, the panel edges arrive at the ridge in the same relationship every time. If one hinge has worn, if a hinge fastener has elongated its hole, or if the box has racked slightly on a trailer that has taken an impact, the panels arrive at the ridge out of alignment.
What owners see is a camper that no longer latches without a shove, or a ridge that is tight at one end and open at the other, or a fine daylight line along the peak. Some owners live with it for years and add sealant to the ridge, which does nothing useful because the seal is a compression seal and adding material to it does not fix geometry.
Our repair works the geometry first. We check both hinge lines for wear and for fastener elongation, check the box for square, and confirm the panels are straight rather than assuming they are. Only after the panels arrive at the ridge correctly does the seal itself get addressed, because a new seal on a misaligned ridge fails at the same place the old one did.

The hinges on an A frame camper are structural components carrying a large panel through a ninety degree arc, and they take their worst load at the beginning and end of that arc when the panel weight is furthest from the hinge axis. Over enough cycles the barrel wears, the fasteners work in their holes and the hinge starts to introduce play that shows up at the ridge as a moving target.
Attachment is the more common failure than the hinge itself. Panel edges are thin, and a hinge leaf fastened into panel edge material without proper backing will eventually pull. The symptom sequence is a hinge that feels slightly loose, then a panel that sits a fraction low at one end, then a visible gap and cracking around the fasteners.
Latches and catches have the same problem in a smaller form. Every latch is trying to pull two panel edges together against a compressed seal, and that force lands on a small footprint in thin material. When a latch pulls, owners frequently respond by tightening the remaining latches harder, which loads them further and accelerates the same failure.
We repair these by putting real backing behind every attachment, either bonded inserts in the panel or a distribution plate that spreads load into both panel skins. Worn hinges get replaced rather than shimmed. Where the original hardware was undersized for the panel it carries, and on some units it plainly was, we fit heavier hardware and detail the attachment accordingly.
Ridge seals, edge trim and where water enters a folded camper
There are two entirely different waterproofing states on an A frame. Raised, the camper has to seal along the ridge and at the panel to wall hinge lines. Folded, the panels lie on the box and the seal runs around the perimeter of the box top. Both states have to work, and a camper can be perfectly dry in one and leak badly in the other.
Owners in West Covina mostly discover the folded state failure, because that is how the camper spends most of its life. Water sits on the closed panels during a winter storm, finds a gap where the panel edge meets the wall top, and tracks down inside the wall. The first visible symptom is usually a stain at the wall to floor joint inside, or a soft area at the base of a wall, long after the actual entry point stopped being obvious.

Lift assist struts and raising a panel that got heavy
Most A frame campers use gas struts to assist raising the panels, and a healthy strut set makes the camper a genuinely one person setup. As struts lose pressure the panels get heavier, and owners compensate with muscle. That is the point at which the hardware starts taking loads it was not meant to see, because a panel being heaved rather than assisted arrives at the ridge with momentum.
The tell is simple. If a panel used to float most of the way up and now needs sustained effort past halfway, the struts are done. If a panel drops rather than settling when you lower it, the same. Replacement is straightforward and we fit struts matched to the panel weight rather than to whatever a generic length chart suggests.
There is a second cause worth checking before condemning struts, which is binding. A panel that is fighting misaligned hinges or a warped edge is harder to raise for reasons that have nothing to do with strut pressure. We check both, because replacing struts on a binding panel produces a camper that is easier to raise and still not correct.
The related item is water weight. A panel whose core has absorbed water is measurably heavier than it was, and a set of struts that was correct for a dry panel will not hold a wet one. When we find struts failing prematurely on a camper that has had them replaced recently, that is a strong hint to probe the panel for moisture before doing anything else.

My A frame will not latch closed at the peak without a real shove. Why?
Geometry rather than the latches. Each panel rotates about a hinge axis, and both axes have to stay true and parallel for the panel edges to arrive at the ridge in the same relationship every time. A worn hinge barrel, an elongated fastener hole or a box that has racked slightly puts the panels out of alignment, and the latches are simply where that becomes obvious. We correct the hinge lines and box square first, then address the seal.
Should I add sealant along the ridge of my A frame to stop a leak?
It will not help and it can make the diagnosis harder. The ridge uses a compression seal that works by being squeezed between two panel edges that meet correctly. Adding sealant on top of it does not restore compression where the geometry has drifted, and it contaminates the surface a new seal has to bond to later. Have the alignment checked. Once the panels close correctly, a new seal run does the job it was designed to do.
My roof panels have gotten heavy to lift. Is it the struts?
Probably, and there are two things to rule out first. A panel that is binding against a misaligned hinge or a distorted edge is harder to raise for reasons unrelated to strut pressure. And a panel whose core has absorbed water is genuinely heavier than it was, which is why struts that were replaced recently and are failing again is a strong hint to probe for moisture. We check binding and panel moisture before fitting new struts matched to panel weight.
There is a stain where my wall meets the floor. Is that from the ridge?
Possibly, but on an A frame the entry point is usually somewhere else. Water most often gets in while the camper is folded, at the joint where a panel edge lies against the wall top, then tracks down inside the wall and appears at the floor joint. Panel edge trim that has lifted is the other frequent source, because panel cores wick moisture along their length. We open the suspect area rather than sealing over the stain.
Can a damaged A frame panel be repaired or does it need replacing?
Most damage is repairable. A panel is a skin over a core or a frame, and we repair it the way the construction demands: crushed or wet core removed and replaced, skin rebonded with correct overlap, edges rebuilt and trim reinstalled with a proper sealing system.
