The shell is the structure on a teardrop
On a large trailer the frame carries the load and the body rides on it. On a teardrop that relationship is much closer to shared. The shell is small, curved and stiff, and on most designs it is doing real structural work: tying the two sides together, resisting racking, and carrying the roof loads that a larger trailer would put through a framed wall. That is why a crack in a teardrop shell deserves more attention than a crack of the same size on a travel trailer.
Cracks concentrate where the shell is interrupted. The upper corners of the rear galley hatch opening are the most common location on almost every design, because the hatch removes a large section of the shell's curved back and the remaining material carries the load around the opening. Door corners are second. Roof vent and hatch penetrations are third.
A stress crack presents as a fine line that shows in raking light and that owners frequently mistake for a scratch in the gel coat. It is not a scratch. It goes through the gel coat into the laminate, and it grows. Once it is long enough to open, water follows it into the core or into the wood substrate on a hybrid build, and then the repair is larger than laminate work.
Correct repair grinds the crack back to sound material with a taper, rebuilds the laminate in stepped layers with matched cloth and resin, then fairs, primes and blocks the area flat under a guide coat before any color or gel goes on. On a small curved shell, blocking that surface flat is the part that takes skill, because every low spot reads instantly on a curve.

The galley hatch: hinge, struts and the seal around it
The rear hatch is the defining feature of a teardrop and the single most repair prone component on one. It is a large curved panel, hinged along the roof line, held open by gas struts, and sealed all the way around a compound curve. Each of those three elements fails in a different way and on a different schedule.
The hinge is a continuous or segmented run of fasteners into the shell at the roof line. It carries the full weight of the hatch through a small number of attachment points, and it takes a shock load every time the hatch closes hard or the trailer hits a bump with the hatch latched. Fasteners work their holes oval, then the hinge line starts to tear the shell, and the visible symptom is cracking or a lifted edge along the roof.
Gas struts have a service life and they announce it. A hatch that used to stay up and now drifts down, or one that needs a shove past halfway, has struts losing pressure. Replacing them is straightforward. What is not straightforward is what happens when someone lets a strut go completely and the hatch drops repeatedly, because that shock load goes straight into the hinge attachment.
The seal is the water item. Sealing a compound curve is hard, and the seal has to compress evenly all the way around against a panel that has to close by hand. When it takes a set, the galley gets wet and the water goes into the lower shell edge and the floor. We rebuild hinge attachment with proper backing, replace struts as a pair with the correct force rating for the hatch, and reset the seal so it compresses evenly around the whole run.
Frames, axles and running gear under a light trailer
Teardrops are light, and owners tend to treat light as meaning the running gear does not need attention. The opposite is closer to the truth. There is usually a single axle with no partner to share load, the frame is a small section, and a trailer that spends its life on a driveway in the sun ages its tires from the sidewall in rather than from the tread down.
Axle mounting is the structural item we find most often. On a torsion axle the mounting plates bolt or weld to the frame rails, and every impact goes through those plates. On a leaf spring setup the hangers are welded to the rail and they take the same loads. Cracking at a hanger weld or a mount plate, or fasteners that have worked loose on a bolted mount, both produce the same early symptom: a trailer that has started to track slightly differently or that sits a touch low on one side.
Off road oriented teardrops add articulating hitches, larger tires and higher clearance, and every one of those changes increases the load into the same mounts. An articulating coupler is a good thing on rough ground, and it also means the tongue sees loads a standard coupler would not transmit. Tongue boxes, racks and spare tire carriers hung off that tongue multiply it further.
We inspect the whole chain: coupler, tongue structure, frame rails, axle mounting, hangers, bushings and the body to frame attachment. Repairs get welded with correct procedure for the base metal and gusseted so the new weld is not the next crack initiation site. Where a bracket was underbuilt from the start, and on owner built teardrops that is common, we fabricate a replacement instead.

Gel coat, paint and the finish on a small curved body
A teardrop presents a small amount of surface area, all of it curved, most of it visible from every angle. That combination makes finish work less forgiving than on a large flat sided trailer. There is no long flat panel to hide a slight wave in, and there is nowhere to run a blend to that is not immediately adjacent to what you are looking at.
On a gel coated shell that has chalked from years of outdoor storage, the first question is whether there is enough material left to save. We wet sand and compound a small test area and see whether gloss returns evenly and how much material comes off. If there is sound gel coat under the chalk, a full oxidation removal and cut and buff produces a genuinely striking result on a small trailer for a fraction of what refinishing costs.
If the test goes through or comes back blotchy, the trailer needs paint, and we say so before quoting rather than after. Painting a teardrop means the whole shell in practice, because a blend on a continuous curve with no break line will show. That is a longer job than owners expect for such a small vehicle, and the reason is cure schedule rather than square footage.
Aluminum clad and plywood teardrops are a separate conversation. Those get metal finishing, riveting, sealant work at lap seams and a clear coat or paint appropriate to the substrate. Skin to frame separation along the lower edge is a common finding on that construction and it gets addressed structurally before anything cosmetic happens.
Towing a teardrop down from West Covina
A teardrop is the easiest thing in this category to get to us. Before you hook up, look at the tire date codes. Teardrops sit for months at a time and Southern California sun cracks sidewalls long before tread wears out. Empty the galley and the cabin. We frequently need access to the lower shell edge, the floor and the frame attachment, and a galley full of gear hides exactly the area where hatch seal leaks show up. If the hatch struts are gone, prop the hatch or latch it for the drive rather than relying on struts that have already failed.

There is a hairline crack at the corner of my teardrop galley hatch. Is it urgent?
Treat it as structural. The hatch opening removes a large section of the shell's curved back, and the remaining material carries load around the corners, which is exactly where cracks start. It goes through the gel coat into the laminate and it grows. Once it opens far enough, water follows it into the core or the wood substrate and the repair becomes much larger. The correct fix grinds it back with a taper, rebuilds the laminate in stepped layers and refinishes.
My galley hatch will not stay up anymore. Just struts?
Usually, and replacing them as a matched pair with the correct force rating for your hatch fixes it. What matters is what happened while they were failing. A hatch that dropped repeatedly puts a shock load into the hinge attachment along the roof line, so we inspect that attachment at the same time. If fasteners have worked their holes oval or the shell has started to tear along the hinge, that gets rebuilt with proper backing before new struts go on.
Water is getting into my teardrop galley. Where should I look first?
The hatch seal, because sealing a compound curve evenly is genuinely hard and the seal takes a compression set over time. Check whether it contacts all the way around by closing the hatch on a strip of paper at several points and seeing where it pulls out easily. After that, look at the hinge line fasteners and at the lower shell edge where the galley floor meets the wall. We reset the seal so it compresses evenly rather than adding foam behind a section of it.
Can the chalky finish on my old teardrop be polished back?
A test panel answers it. We wet sand and compound a small area to see how much gel coat is left and whether gloss returns evenly. If there is sound material under the chalk, heavy oxidation removal and a proper cut and buff produce an excellent result on a small trailer for far less than refinishing. If the test goes through to laminate or comes back blotchy, it needs paint, and on a continuous curve that means the whole shell rather than a blend.
