Known issues

What we see on Grand Design RV units

Slide seal compression on the large multi slide floorplans these units favor

Front cap sealing above the pin box on Solitude and Reflection fifth wheels

Roof transition sealant at the cap junctions after extended heat exposure

Momentum ramp door hinge and cable wear under heavy garage loads

Sidewall laminate separation at the awning rail on units stored outdoors

Frame stress on heavily optioned Solitude units towed at capacity

Fuel station compartment sealing on toy haulers

Model lines we work on: Solitude luxury fifth wheels, Reflection fifth wheels and travel trailers, Imagine and Imagine XLS travel trailers, Transcend and Transcend Xplor, Momentum and Momentum G Class toy haulers, Influence fifth wheels, Lineage Class C motorhomes.

Better construction does not mean fewer slide problems

Grand Design earned its reputation honestly. Framing, insulation and finish detail are better than the volume average, and the units generally hold up well.

What does not change is slide seal physics. These floorplans favor multiple large rooms, which means more seal length, more compression over time and more places for water to run down the face of a room rather than off the top of it.

So the highest value inspection on a used Grand Design is the same as on any towable: press the floor at the bottom edge of every slide opening. Good construction slows the damage, it does not prevent the cause.

Solitude, weight and what towing at capacity does

A heavily optioned Solitude is a large trailer carrying a lot of equipment, and many are towed at or close to their rated capacity because that is what the owner needs from them.

The structure is built for it, and it also lives closer to its design limit than a light trailer ever does. Small structural signals therefore matter more here than they would on a half ton towable.

A hairline in the front cap, a cabinet that begins to shift, a slide needing more force are worth investigating on this class of trailer rather than tolerating for another season.

Momentum garage loading and the ramp door

Momentum garages are well built and generously rated, which encourages owners to use them fully. The ramp door still wears the way all ramp doors wear.

Hinge pin elongation and cable stretch drop the door out of its designed closed position gradually. Owners notice when it needs a shove, which is long after the seal stopped sealing.

The fuel station compartment is worth checking at the same time. Penetrations through the floor and sidewall are potential water paths, and sealing them is inexpensive preventive work compared to the floor structure they eventually reach.

Getting here from West Covina

23281 La Palma Ave in Yorba Linda, roughly 22 miles from West Covina, 30 to 45 minutes via the 57 and the 91.

For a large fifth wheel, bring the tow vehicle and plan to leave the unit. For structural evaluation, loaded as it normally travels is more informative than empty.

Questions we get asked

Does better construction mean I can skip the slide inspection

No. Grand Design construction is genuinely above the volume average and that slows the damage, but it does not change the cause. These floorplans favor multiple large rooms, which means more seal length and more places for water to run down a room face rather than off its top. Press the floor at each slide opening.

My Solitude has a hairline crack in the front cap

Worth investigating rather than watching, especially if the trailer tows near capacity. The area above the pin box takes every towing load, and crazing there means the laminate is working. It is also worth evaluating the frame, since rebuilding a cap over a frame that is still moving reproduces the crack.

Should I have the fuel station compartment checked

Yes, whenever the trailer is in for other work. It has floor and sidewall penetrations an ordinary trailer does not, and sealing them is inexpensive preventive work compared with repairing the floor structure the water eventually reaches.
