Known issues

What we see on Dutchmen RV units

Roof to sidewall seam sealant opening on Aspen Trail and Coleman units after several seasons of heat cycling

Sidewall laminate separation along the awning rail fastener line

Corner molding fastener backout creating a hidden water path

Front cap sealing on fifth wheels above the pin box

Entry door frame racking on units leveled unevenly for long stays

Model lines we work on: Aspen Trail and Aspen Trail LE travel trailers, Coleman and Coleman Lantern, Kodiak and Kodiak Ultra Lite, Voltage and Voltage Triton toy haulers, Astoria fifth wheels, Atlas travel trailers, Yukon fifth wheels, Rubicon toy haulers.

Volume towable construction and the seams that matter

Dutchmen builds to a competitive price point across most of its range, using laminated sidewalls, a membrane roof and standard slide hardware. The construction is conventional, which makes the failure modes predictable.

Predictable is useful. On these units the roof to sidewall seam, the corner moldings and the awning rail fastener line account for most water intrusion, and all three are inspectable from a ladder in fifteen minutes.

Owners who make that a seasonal habit avoid nearly all of the expensive repairs we see on this brand. The ones who do not tend to arrive with a soft floor and a surprised expression.

Voltage and Rubicon garage loading

Toy hauler garages have ratings and the ratings are meaningful. The ramp door is a moving structural element carrying loads no ordinary RV door experiences, and it wears accordingly.

Hinge pin holes elongate, cables stretch, and the door gradually stops sitting where it was designed to sit. Owners notice when it needs a shove, which is well after the seal stopped making contact.

The rear wall is the second thing to check. Repeated overloading flexes it, and the wall to floor joint at the rear opens before anything visible happens to the wall itself.

Slide seals and the damage they cause quietly

A compressed slide seal does not drip. It stops shedding water off the top edge of the room, so water runs down the face of the room and collects at the bottom edge where the room meets the sidewall.

That joint is hidden, so the water works on the subfloor with nothing to signal it. By the time the floor gives underfoot, it has been happening for a season or more.

Pressing the floor at each slide opening takes thirty seconds and is the highest value inspection on any used Dutchmen towable.

Drive context from West Covina

23281 La Palma Ave in Yorba Linda, about 22 miles from West Covina, 30 to 45 minutes on the 57 and the 91.

Bring the tow vehicle and plan to leave the trailer. Do not seal a suspected leak before bringing it in, since fresh sealant over an active path makes the entry point substantially harder to find.

Questions we get asked

What is the single most useful thing I can check myself

Press the floor firmly at the bottom edge of each slide opening. Slide seal failure never announces itself with a visible drip, so this hidden joint is where damage accumulates unnoticed. Thirty seconds of pressing catches a repair that is contained rather than one that has reached the main floor structure.

How often should I inspect the roof seams

Seasonally, from a ladder, and reseal what has moved rather than following a fixed schedule. Southern California heat cycling works sealant harder than most climates. Fifteen minutes twice a year prevents most of the expensive repairs we see on volume towables.

My Voltage ramp door has gotten hard to close

Hinge elongation and cable stretch from loading, not a seal problem. The door has moved out of its designed closed position. Replacing the seal on a door that no longer sits correctly is a temporary fix. Also worth checking the rear wall to floor joint, which opens next under the same cause.
