The tub compartment: wet area surfaces and the seams that let go first

A grooming van is a wet room on wheels, and that changes what a normal interior repair has to do. Water is sprayed at the walls several times a day, the compartment never fully dries between appointments, and the whole assembly is flexing down the road while it stays damp. Sealed seams in that environment are working joints, not static ones. The first thing to fail is the vertical seam behind the tub where two FRP panels meet, because that is where spray hits hardest and where panel movement is greatest.

Once a seam opens, the water goes into the wall cavity rather than back into the tub. The visible sign is minor: a slight bulge in the panel, a discolored line, a spot that feels warm or soft under the hand. Behind it the cavity holds standing water against insulation and framing. We open the wall, remove wet insulation, replace corroded or delaminated framing, and rebuild the surface in full panel widths with continuous adhesive and mechanically fastened trim at the joints rather than a bead of sealant doing structural duty.

Finish detail is what makes the repair last. Inside corners get coved so spray cannot drive into a square angle. Panel edges terminate under trim with a positive lap so water runs down and out instead of sitting on an exposed edge. Any fastener through the wet area gets sealed and, where possible, kept out of the splash zone entirely. Where a previous repair used a sheet of panel cut short and filled with sealant, that section comes out and gets redone properly.

Floor pan corrosion under a grooming tub and the structure below it

The floor under and around a grooming tub is the single most damaged area on these vans, and it is usually much worse than the owner expects. Water finds the tub drain penetration, the fastener line around the tub base, and the joint where the floor covering turns up at the wall. From there it sits on the steel floor pan of a van body or on the framing of a cutaway floor, and it does not evaporate. The van keeps working while the floor quietly corrodes from the top down.

Symptoms are subtle until they are not. A slight give underfoot at the tub, a rust bloom appearing on the underside of the floor pan, a fastener that will no longer take torque, or a drain fitting that will not stay sealed no matter how many times it is redone. That last one is the tell: a drain that keeps leaking almost always means the material around it has thinned to the point where nothing seals against it. We cut back to sound metal, let in new floor pan material with proper preparation, and rebuild the framing underneath where it has lost section.

Rebuilding the floor is also the moment to fix the drain detail permanently. The penetration gets a properly sized and reinforced opening, the fitting seats on a flat prepared surface rather than on filler, and the floor covering is reinstalled with a coved base up the wall so the wet area drains into the tub instead of into the joint. The tub itself, the pump, the drain plumbing and the water heater go back to your plumbing supplier. We rebuild the structure and the surfaces they live on.

Fresh and waste tank mounting structure in a van body

Tanks are heavy and they slosh. A partly full fresh water tank in a grooming van applies a moving load to its straps every time the driver turns, brakes or crosses a rough section of Azusa Avenue. Most conversions mount those straps into a floor sheet or into a light bracket, because at build time the tank is empty and the mounting looks adequate. After a couple of years of duty the fastener holes elongate, the strap loosens, and the tank starts to shift, which puts strain on every plumbing connection attached to it.

The fix is structural. We locate or fabricate framing under the tank position, install backing plates or a proper cradle that supports the tank across its base rather than pinching it at two straps, and through fasten into structure with load spread. Where a tank sits above the floor in a cabinet, the cabinet base gets rebuilt to carry the weight and the cabinet is anchored into the floor framing. Every penetration through the floor for a strap or a fitting gets sealed from below.

Waste tanks get the same treatment plus attention to what leaks around them. A waste tank that has been shifting usually has a stained area under it, and that stain marks a spot where the floor has been wet for a long time. We repair the floor under the tank position before the new mounting goes in, so the new cradle is not bolted to material that is already going. Tanks, pumps, valves, hoses and the water heater remain with your plumbing supplier throughout.

Dryer, table and equipment mounting reinforcement in a thin wall van

Van conversions give you very little to fasten to. The wall of a ProMaster, a Sprinter or a Transit is thin sheet with widely spaced ribs, and a grooming build hangs real weight on it: cage banks, a grooming table, dryer units, shelving, a vacuum system and the hoses attached to all of them. When those items are fastened into skin and panel adhesive, the mounting holds until vibration and repeated loading wallow the holes, and then everything begins to shift at once.

We rebuild these mounts into the vehicle's actual structure. That means locating the ribs and frame members, adding steel or aluminum blocking between them where the equipment position does not line up, and using backing plates that spread the load over a wide area of the skin rather than concentrating it at a washer. On cutaway bodies with framed walls the same principle applies with proper blocking between studs. Once the mounting is right, the panel goes back and the surface is finished so the wet area still cleans properly.

Dryers and cage banks get particular attention because they combine mass with vibration. A dryer mounted high on a wall applies a leveraged load every time the van moves, and a cage bank concentrates weight at a small footprint. We tie those loads into the floor structure where the layout allows rather than hanging everything on a wall, and we gusset brackets that carry a cantilevered load. Dryer motors, vacuum units, clipper systems and the electrical connections to them stay with your equipment supplier.

Condensation, window frame leaks and the rear door and step

A lot of the damage in a grooming van comes from inside, not from the weather. Hot water, animal heat and a closed body produce heavy condensation, and that moisture condenses on the coldest surface it can find, which is the bare metal skin behind the insulation. On a van with insulation that has compressed or absorbed water, that condensate never leaves. The result is corrosion in places that never got sprayed and a persistent damp smell that no amount of cleaning fixes. Repair means opening the wall, removing the failed insulation, treating the skin and rebuilding with material that will not hold water.

Window frames are the other quiet source. A bonded or framed window in a van body leaks at the lower corners first, and the water runs down the inside of the skin into the rocker cavity, where it is invisible until the rocker shows through. We remove the window, clean and rebuild the flange, treat corrosion at the opening, and reset the glass on sound substrate. Reglazing over a corroded flange puts adhesive on material that will keep moving. On framed windows we replace failed frame seals and correct any opening that has distorted.

The rear door and step take mechanical abuse on top of the moisture. Hinges sag from repeated loading and from the door being held open in wind, so the door drops and the latch has to be forced. Steps corrode at the fastener line where water gets under the mounting. The side entry door frame and any ramp threshold rack the same way a clinic doorway does, from cycle load. We rebuild the frames, replace or rebush hinges, reset strikers, and repair the step structure with sealed and prepared fasteners so the corrosion does not simply restart.

Wrap, branding and where our scope stops on a grooming van

A grooming van is a rolling advertisement in a way most work vehicles are not, and it parks in residential neighborhoods where it gets looked at closely. That makes the exterior finish part of the business. We repair the body damage under the wrap first, because vinyl over a wavy or bubbled panel reads worse than bare paint. Sliding door tracks, rocker scrapes from tight driveways, mirror and flare damage from narrow West Covina streets and quarter panel dents all get corrected before any graphics are considered.

Substrate preparation matters for how long a wrap lasts. Questions we get asked

The floor by my grooming tub feels spongy. Does the tub have to come out?

Usually yes, and it is worth doing properly. Sponginess at the tub means water has been sitting on the floor pan or the floor framing, most often entering at the drain penetration or the fastener line around the tub base. We remove the tub, cut back to sound material, let in new floor pan and repair the framing underneath, then rebuild the drain opening on a flat prepared surface so the fitting finally seats. Patching around an installed tub leaves the wet material in place.

Water keeps getting behind the wall panel in my grooming van. Can that be stopped for good?

Yes, but not with more sealant. A wet area seam is a working joint, and a bead of caulk carrying that movement will reopen. We take out the affected panel, remove the wet insulation and any corroded framing behind it, then rebuild in full panel widths with continuous adhesive, mechanically fastened trim at the joints, coved inside corners and lapped panel edges. Fasteners are kept out of the splash zone. That combination is what actually holds up to daily spray and daily flexing.

My water tank has started moving and the straps will not stay tight. What is the real fix?

Rebuilding what the straps are bolted to. On most conversions the straps go into a floor sheet or a light bracket, and after a couple of years of a sloshing load the holes elongate and nothing you torque will hold. We add framing under the tank position, build a cradle that supports the tank across its base instead of pinching it at two points, through fasten into structure with backing plates, and seal every floor penetration from below. The tank and its plumbing go back to your supplier.

My dryer bracket tore out of the van wall. Can it just be rebolted with bigger screws?

No, and that is the repair we most often get called to redo. A van wall is thin sheet with widely spaced ribs, so a larger fastener in the same hole concentrates even more load on material that has already failed. We locate the ribs, add blocking between them where your layout needs it, mount with backing plates that spread the load across a wide area, and gusset any bracket carrying a cantilevered dryer. Where the layout allows we tie the load down into the floor structure instead.

How long is a grooming van in your shop for wet area and floor work?

A full wet area and floor rebuild is normally a multi week job, because it is really three jobs stacked: teardown, structural repair, then surfaces and finish that need cure time before the van goes back to daily spray. Lighter work such as a single wall section and a seam rebuild moves considerably faster.
