Fenders and flares on Class C and Super C coaches

Class C and Super C motorhomes carry a fiberglass or composite flare over each rear wheel well, and those flares live a hard life. They sit low, they are wide, they catch curbs and posts, and they are directly in the path of anything a rear tire throws. They are also bonded and fastened to a sidewall that is a laminated assembly, so damage to a flare frequently involves the wall behind it.

Cracked flares repair well when the underlying mounting is sound. Grind the crack back to sound laminate, build it up in stepped layers with cloth and resin from behind where access allows, fair the outside, refinish. When the flare has separated from the wall, or when the sidewall behind it has been breached, the repair extends into the wall assembly and the seal at the top edge of the flare has to be restored.

The top edge is the part owners should care about most. That is where water gets in. A flare that is loose along its upper seam funnels road spray directly into the sidewall lamination, and by the time it shows on the interior wall the damage is measured in feet, not inches. Any flare repair we do includes resealing that transition properly rather than running a bead of sealant over the top of the old one.

Quarter panel damage on vans and work trucks

Cargo vans and Sprinters take quarter panel damage constantly, and the causes are boring: loading docks, gate posts, concrete columns in parking structures and other vehicles in tight yards. A full length scrape down a quarter is the single most common body job on a working van.

On a monocoque van body the quarter panel is structural, meaning it is part of what holds the vehicle together rather than a bolt on piece. Repairs are made in place: pull and straighten where the metal will accept it, section and weld in new material where it will not, then finish and refinish. Sectioning a van quarter is skilled work because the panel wraps around the rear opening and any distortion shows in the door gap.

The gaps are the tell. After a quarter repair, the rear door or the sliding door should open, close and latch with the same effort as before and the gap should stay parallel along its length. We check gaps against the undamaged side and adjust before the vehicle goes to paint, because a gap that is off by a few millimeters is visible to anyone who walks past the vehicle.

Wheel well and skin damage after a tire failure

A tire that comes apart at speed does an amount of damage that surprises people. The tread separates and beats the underside of the vehicle and the wheel well area with real force. On an RV that means torn skin above the wheel well, damaged wheel well liner, destroyed flare, broken plumbing and wiring runs in the affected bay, and sometimes damage to the floor structure.

The repair starts with a full survey rather than with the visible tear. We look inside the bay, at the plumbing and wiring that runs along that side, at the floor edge, at the slide mechanism if the failure was near one, and at the tanks. Tread damage to a fresh water or gray tank is common and is easy to miss until the tank is filled.

Then the body repair proceeds normally: damaged skin sectioned or replaced, framing repaired, flare rebuilt or replaced, everything resealed, and the area refinished with the color blended into the surrounding panels. If the failure was caused by an underlying condition rather than by debris, that is worth investigating with your tire provider, because a second failure will undo the repair.

Repair, section or replace: making the call on a quarter

Repair is right when the damage is shallow, the metal is not badly stretched, and there is no corrosion. Most dock scrapes fall here: the panel is scuffed and lightly deformed, and it straightens and skims cleanly.

Sectioning is right when the damage is confined to one area of a panel that cannot be removed as a unit. Van quarters and truck cab corners fall here. New material is cut, fitted, welded in at a location chosen for strength and for how the seam will finish, then the weld is dressed and sealed. Done properly the section is invisible after refinish and stronger than the surrounding sheet metal.

Replacement is right when the panel is a bolt on part, when corrosion has taken hold across a wide area, or when the deformation is severe enough that sectioning would replace most of the panel anyway. On truck cabs, fenders are frequently bolt on and replacement is fast. On vans and RVs, replacement usually means sectioning by another name because the panel is not a discrete part.

Getting the body line back

Every vehicle has character lines, and the eye is remarkably good at finding a line that is not straight even when it cannot say why the vehicle looks wrong. A quarter panel or fender repair is judged on whether the character line runs true from the front of the vehicle to the back, whether the wheel opening matches the shape on the other side, and whether reflections travel across the panel without wobbling.

We check these with a long straightedge and with reflected light rather than by eye alone. Holding a fluorescent tube or a reflection board against the panel shows waviness that a hand will never feel and that the eye will absolutely notice once the panel is glossy.

This is also why the refinish blends into the adjacent panels rather than stopping at the repair. A perfectly straight panel with a hard paint edge next to it still reads as a repair. Blending into the door, the rocker or the adjacent quarter and clearing to a natural break is what makes the whole side read as one surface again.

The fiberglass flare on my Class C is cracked. Can it be repaired or does it need a new one?

Most crack repairs go fine as long as the mounting to the sidewall is still sound. We grind back to good laminate, build the area up in stepped layers with cloth and resin, fair the contour and refinish. The part to insist on is resealing the top edge where the flare meets the sidewall, because a loose upper seam funnels road spray straight into the wall lamination.

How do you repair a full length scrape down a cargo van quarter panel?
