Reading a dent before anyone touches it
The first thing a technician does with a dent is figure out what the material did. A dent where the panel simply deflected inward without stretching can often be brought back close to its original shape. A dent where the material stretched, which is what happens along the length of a crease or at the center of a sharp impact, cannot be pushed back to flat because there is now more surface area than there is space for it.
The second question is what is behind the panel. On a laminated RV sidewall, a dent may have crushed the foam core and pushed against a wall stud. On a cargo van quarter, there may be a structural brace directly behind the low spot. On a fiberglass cap there may be nothing but air, or there may be a bonded reinforcement that has now released.
The third question is whether the skin was breached. Even a hairline split at the deepest point of a dent lets water into the wall assembly, and on a laminated body that is the beginning of delamination. We check the perimeter of every dent for cracking and we sound the panel around it for hollow tone. What that inspection finds is what the estimate is built on, which is why we prefer to look at the vehicle rather than at a photograph.
Paintless dent removal and where it stops working on an RV
Paintless dent removal works by massaging the back side of a panel with specialized rods until the metal returns to shape, leaving the original finish intact. On automotive sheet metal with access through a door frame or a wheel well, it is an elegant and inexpensive repair. On RVs its usefulness is narrow.
The limits are access and material. Most RV skins have insulation, framing and an interior panel directly behind them, so there is nothing to reach through. The aluminum used on RV skins is also thinner and less forgiving than automotive body panels, and it work hardens quickly, meaning it becomes brittle exactly where you are trying to move it. Fiberglass and filon do not respond to the technique at all.
Where it does apply is on the metal skins of some cargo van and box truck panels with open interior access, on certain aluminum trailer skins where an interior panel can be removed, and on chassis body panels like a Class C cab door or a truck cab. When it is viable we will tell you, because it is the cheapest good outcome available. When it is not, pretending otherwise just wastes a step.
Access is what sets the price on RV dent work
Two identical dents on two identical coaches can differ substantially in cost, and the reason is almost always what has to come apart to reach the back side. A dent on a sidewall directly behind a run of upper cabinets means removing the cabinets, the wall panel and the insulation, then reversing all of it after the repair. A dent in a bare wall section with a removable interior panel is a fraction of that.
Exterior access matters too. A dent under an awning rail, behind a slide fascia, at the transition to the roof edge or in a corner radius requires removing hardware and often working in a position with no room for tools. Some areas cannot be reached from behind at any reasonable cost, and those become face repairs with filler over a supported panel.
This is why the estimate specifies the access plan. We tell you what comes apart, why it comes apart, and what the alternative is if you would rather accept a face repair. Owners frequently make a different decision once they understand that the difference is interior teardown rather than skill.
Filler done correctly, and how much is too much
Body filler has a bad reputation earned by shops that use it as a substitute for metal work. Used properly it is a fairing material: a thin skim that takes a panel that has already been brought within a small fraction of an inch of correct and makes it perfectly flat. Used improperly it is a thick wedge holding the shape of a panel that was never straightened, and it cracks, shrinks and telegraphs.
Our rule is that the metal or laminate gets brought as close to original as the material allows first, and filler is applied thin over a sound, supported surface. On aluminum that means working the panel and, where the material has stretched, accepting that some thickness is required. On fiberglass it means laminating the repair back to full structure with cloth and resin before any fairing material goes on.
Thickness has consequences beyond appearance. Thick filler on a panel that flexes will crack, and thick filler over a laminated wall traps heat differently than the panel around it, which shows up in raking sun as a visible patch. If a repair would need more filler than the material can support, the correct answer is sectioning or replacing the panel, and we will say so.
Hail, tree limbs and the multi dent vehicle
Occasionally a rig comes in with dozens of small dents rather than one large one. Hail is the classic cause, though in the San Gabriel Valley a fallen limb or a storage yard incident is more common. These vehicles need a different approach from single dent repair.
The first step is mapping. Every dent gets marked and counted under raking light, panel by panel, because carriers estimate hail damage by count and panel. That map is the documentation the claim is built on and it takes real time to produce properly.
The second step is a decision about method. Large numbers of shallow dents on accessible metal may be candidates for paintless techniques. Dents on fiberglass caps, roof caps and slide tops usually are not, and those panels often go to a full refinish because repairing forty small low spots individually costs more than fairing and repainting the panel. The right call depends on panel count, material and how much of the vehicle is involved, and we lay both paths out on the estimate so you and your adjuster are looking at the same choices.

Can you pop a dent out of my travel trailer sidewall without painting it?
Rarely, and only where there is real access behind the skin and the metal was not stretched. Most trailer sidewalls have insulation, framing and an interior panel directly behind them, so there is nothing to push against. If an interior panel can be removed cleanly in that area, we will look at it. Otherwise the repair is a face repair with filler and a blended refinish.
Why does one dent cost more to fix than another dent the same size?
Access. A dent behind a run of upper cabinets means removing cabinets, wall panel and insulation and then putting all of it back. There is a dent in my RV wall but nothing hit the outside. What happened?
Something inside moved. A shifted load in a basement bay, a cabinet that broke loose in transit, or in a toy hauler a piece of cargo that was not tied down. Occasionally it is a framing member that has failed and is no longer supporting the wall. Either way we open it up before repairing the skin, because pushing the outside back out without fixing the cause gets you the same dent again.
Will the repaired area be visible after paint?
Not if the panel underneath was made flat and the color was blended properly. What gives repairs away is thick filler over a panel that was never straightened, which shrinks and telegraphs, or a hard tape line instead of a blend. We keep filler thin over supported material and blend the base into adjacent panels, then clear to a natural break line.
