A Schwintek room that racked itself over a month of retry attempts
2015 Class C motorhome, 28 foot, West Covina owner
Short answer. The slide would extend but stop partway on retraction, then walk crooked. The owner cycled it repeatedly over several weeks hoping it would correct itself. By arrival the room sat visibly out of square, the wiper seal on one side had rolled under, and one vertical rail showed damaged teeth. A technician elsewhere had quoted a motor replacement without checking rail condition or room geometry.
What the job involved
- Inspected rail condition, motor function, controller status and room geometry before touching any component
- Found one rail with damaged teeth and both motors out of sync, plus a room dropped at the outboard corner
- Discovered a compressed wiper seal that had been leaking into the floor cavity below the room
- Removed the room, replaced both vertical rails and the damaged gear packs, and resynced the controller
- Repaired the wet section of the slide room floor and sealed the substrate before reassembly
- Replaced the full seal set including wiper, bulb and D seals rather than the single failed seal
- Reset room geometry, verified travel under load and cycled the room repeatedly to confirm sync retention
How it went back out
The original motors tested fine and were reused, which is why a proper diagnosis mattered. The real cost driver was the floor damage caused by the leaking seal, not the mechanism. The owner was shown the wet substrate before it was repaired. The room now operates square and quiet, and the owner was walked through the correct operating sequence, since a large share of slide failures start with operating the room while the coach is unlevel.
