Chalked clear and lifting decals on a coach that lived in the sun

Short answer. A decade of inland Southern California sun had destroyed the clear coat across the entire upper body. The surface was chalky to the touch, the original decals were curling at every edge, and polishing had already been attempted twice with no lasting result. Once clear coat film has failed, polish removes what remains rather than restoring gloss, so the only correct path was refinish.
What the job involved
- Assessed film thickness across the body to confirm clear failure rather than surface oxidation
- Removed all original decals and adhesive residue without damaging the underlying substrate
- Sanded failed clear back to a stable base, repaired minor gelcoat chips and stress cracks
- Sealed the full body, then sprayed base and a multi stage finish in a booth sized for the full coach length
- Evaluated color and metallic flop under natural light before committing to the upper panels
- Applied new full body graphics designed to the owner selected layout
- Polished, sealed and completed a final inspection under both booth and daylight conditions
How it went back out
The coach left with a uniform finish across the full body rather than panel to panel variation, which is what happens when a large body is refinished in sections outdoors. Working indoors in a coach length booth was the difference. The owner was walked through the color and the graphics layout before spraying, so there were no surprises at delivery.
