Summer Heat and the Sidewall Bubble You Find in August

Short answer. A sidewall bubble that appears in August did not start in August. Water or an impact broke the bond months earlier, and inland heat expanded the trapped air and vapor until the skin lifted visibly. Finding the water source matters more than the bubble, because injecting a panel over a wet core fails again.

Why the bubble appears in July and August

An RV sidewall is a bonded sandwich. On most coaches that is a thin fiberglass or filon skin, a substrate layer of luan or a composite board, framing and insulation, and an interior panel. The skin does not hang on the wall. It is glued to what is behind it, and the whole panel works as one piece only while that glue holds.

Delamination is the loss of that bond. It can sit there invisibly for a long time, because the skin is stiff enough to stay flat over a small void. What changes in summer is pressure. A dark or south facing sidewall in West Covina reaches temperatures far above ambient in July, and the air and moisture trapped in the void expand.

That expansion is what pushes the skin out. The owner walks past the coach in August and sees a bulge that was not there in April. Nothing failed in August. August just made it visible.

This is why the same bubble often looks smaller in January. The void has not healed. It has cooled.

What breaks the bond in the first place

Two causes account for most of what comes through the shop. Water is the bigger one and impact is the more obvious one.

Water gets in at a penetration. A window frame that has lost its sealant, an awning rail, a clearance light, a compartment door flange or a corner molding are the usual entry points. The water does not need to arrive in quantity. It only needs to reach the substrate, because luan swells when it wets and swelling breaks the adhesive bond mechanically.

Impact is simpler. A tree branch at a campsite, a ladder leaned against the wall, a low speed contact in a parking structure. Fiberglass skin flexes and springs back, but the adhesive underneath does not. The bond releases over an area much larger than the contact and the skin looks nearly untouched.

There is a third cause we see on older coaches with no history of either: bond line age. Adhesives used in the nineties and early two thousands were not what current ones are, and some coaches simply reach an age where the bond gives up along a seam.

Reading a bubble to work out which one you have

The shape and location tell you a great deal before anything is opened up.

  • A bubble directly under a window, a rail or a light usually means water at that penetration
  • A bubble that starts at the bottom of the wall and works upward suggests water sitting in the floor to wall junction
  • A round or oval area away from any penetration usually means impact
  • A long narrow lift running along a seam suggests bond line failure or a leaking molding
  • A bubble that grows through the summer and shrinks in winter is trapped moisture, not just air
  • Several small separate bubbles across one panel often means the substrate is broadly wet

Testing the wall before deciding anything

Tap the panel with a knuckle or the plastic handle of a screwdriver, starting well away from the bubble so you have a reference sound. A bonded wall gives a tight click. A debonded area gives a dull hollow note. Map the edges of the hollow area with tape as you go, because the loose region is almost always larger than the visible bulge.

Press with a flat palm rather than a fingertip. A fingertip finds flex that is normal on a large panel. A flat palm finds softness, which is different, and softness means the substrate behind the skin has lost strength rather than just lost adhesion.

Check the interior at the matching location. Stains, a wall panel seam that has opened, a wallpaper edge lifting, or a musty smell in a cabinet against that wall all point toward water rather than impact.

Sight along the wall in raking light at the end of the day. Low sun across a sidewall reveals waves and edges that are invisible at noon, and it will usually show you the true extent of the affected area better than any single test.

Why chasing the leak comes before repairing the wall

Injection repair works. Adhesive is introduced into the void through small holes, the panel is clamped flat against boards while it cures, and the skin bonds back to the substrate. On a dry debond it is a durable fix.

On a wet substrate it is not a fix at all. Adhesive does not bond to damp luan, and the swollen and softened board underneath has no strength to bond to in the first place. The panel looks flat when the clamps come off and it comes loose again within a season.

So the first job is water source, not wall. We work the penetrations above and beside the affected area, checking sealant condition at window frames, rails, lights and moldings, and where necessary we probe the substrate to find out how wet it actually is and how far the wet region extends.

That order also protects the repair estimate from becoming a series of unpleasant surprises. Knowing whether the substrate is dry, damp or destroyed before writing the job is the difference between an injection and a panel rebuild.

Repair paths from injection to a rebuilt wall section

Small dry delamination is injected and clamped. Access holes are drilled in an inconspicuous pattern, adhesive is worked into the void, and the area is held flat while it cures. Done properly the repair disappears and the panel stiffness returns.

Larger areas with sound substrate get vacuum assisted rebonding, where the whole affected region is pulled flat against the structure while adhesive cures across the full area rather than in patches. This is a shop process. It needs the coach level, stable and at a controlled temperature for the duration of the cure.

A wet or delaminated substrate means removing the skin over the affected area, replacing the substrate back to sound material, and rebonding new skin. On a coach with a printed or gel coated finish, the skin section then has to be blended into the surrounding surface, which is where much of the finish labor sits.

Full panel replacement is the answer when the affected area spans most of a wall or when the framing behind it has been wet long enough to matter. It is a serious job and we say so plainly rather than selling an injection that will not hold.

Timing this repair around a Southern California summer

There is a practical argument for doing delamination work in spring or autumn rather than at the peak of summer. Adhesives have working temperature windows, and a wall that is at extreme surface temperature is harder to bond reliably even under cover.

There is also a strong argument for not waiting. A void that is pumping moist air in and out with every daily heat cycle is actively wetting the substrate around it. The area that could have been injected in May becomes a substrate replacement by September.

We do not offer mobile service, and delamination work in particular needs a controlled bay because the panel has to stay clamped and stable for the full cure.

Why does my RV sidewall bulge in summer and look flat in winter

Because the void is already there year round and heat is expanding what is trapped inside it. Air and moisture in a debonded area expand as the wall surface heats, and on an inland summer day a sidewall gets far hotter than the air around it. In winter the same void contracts and the skin lies back down. The bubble disappearing is not the panel healing, and the underlying bond is still gone.

Can delamination be repaired without removing the outer skin

Often yes, if the substrate behind it is dry and sound. Adhesive is injected through small access holes and the panel is clamped or vacuum held flat while it cures. That works well on impact caused debonding. It does not work where water has swollen and softened the substrate, because there is nothing solid for the adhesive to bond to. We probe the substrate before committing to an injection.

How do I find where the water is getting in behind the wall

Start above the affected area and work down, because water travels downward inside a wall. Check sealant at the window frame, the awning rail, any clearance lights, the corner moldings and any compartment flange in the region. Look for cracked, shrunk or lifted sealant rather than obvious holes. In the shop we probe the substrate at several points to map how far the wet area extends, which usually points back at the entry.

Is a soft spot on the wall the same thing as delamination

Not quite, and the difference matters. Delamination is a loss of adhesion between layers that are otherwise intact. Softness under a flat palm means the substrate itself has lost strength, which almost always means it has been wet. A wall can be delaminated and firm, which is the easier repair, or delaminated and soft, which means substrate replacement. We check both by tapping and by pressing, not by looking.

Will delamination get worse if I just leave it alone

Yes, and the mechanism is the daily heat cycle. Each hot afternoon expands the air in the void and each cool night contracts it, which draws humid air in and works the edges of the debonded area outward. If water is involved it keeps wetting substrate that was previously dry. A small area that could be injected in spring commonly becomes a substrate replacement by the end of an inland summer.
