Gelcoat Chalking: Inland Sun and a Dull Fifth Wheel Side

Short answer. Chalking is oxidized gelcoat. Ultraviolet light breaks down the resin at the surface and leaves loose pigment that rubs off on a hand. Light oxidation polishes out and can be protected. Deep oxidation that has reached printed graphics or thinned the gelcoat past safe cutting depth needs refinishing instead.
What chalking actually is on a gelcoat surface
Gelcoat is a pigmented resin layer applied at the mold face during manufacture. It is not paint and it does not sit on top of the laminate. It is the outermost part of the laminate, and it is thin.
Ultraviolet light attacks the resin that binds the pigment. As that resin breaks down at the surface, the pigment particles are left loose. Wipe a chalked panel with a dark cloth and the cloth comes away colored. That is your finish coming off in your hand.
The visual result is a loss of gloss first, then a wash of color, then a dry powdery surface. On a white coach it reads as a yellowish dullness. On a colored panel or a printed graphic it reads as fading, because the pigment is literally leaving.
None of this is dirt, and none of it washes off. That is the first thing to establish, because owners often spend a season trying stronger detergents on a problem that soap cannot touch.
Why inland valley exposure is harder than coastal exposure
The San Gabriel Valley delivers more clear sky days and higher surface temperatures than the coast, and both accelerate the same chemistry. A coach parked in an open lot in West Covina takes a genuinely heavier ultraviolet dose than the same coach parked twenty miles west under a regular marine layer.
Heat matters independently. Chemical degradation rates rise with temperature, so a surface that runs hot for eight hours a day in summer degrades faster than a cooler surface receiving the same light.
Orientation decides which panels go first. In a lot where coaches are parked in rows, the south and west facing sides take the load. It is extremely common to see a fifth wheel with one side that polishes back to gloss easily and one side that has nothing left to polish.
Horizontal surfaces are worse again. The front cap crown, the roof edges and the top of the rear cap collect the highest annual dose, which is why those are usually the first areas where compounding stops working.
Testing how deep the oxidation has gone
The test is simple and it can be done in a corner of one panel. Clean a small area properly, then work it by hand with a mild compound and a foam pad. What happens next tells you which repair you are in.
- Gloss returns quickly with light effort: surface oxidation, a polish and protect job
- Gloss returns with sustained effort and a heavier compound: moderate, still restorable
- Color improves but the surface stays hazy no matter what you do: the gelcoat has thinned
- The pad picks up strong color from a graphic area: the printed layer is being removed, stop
- You reach a dull grey or the underlying laminate texture appears: the gelcoat is through
- The panel shows fine cracking that becomes more visible after polishing: crazing, not oxidation
Compounding done properly, and where owners go wrong
Restoring oxidized gelcoat is abrasive work. You are cutting the degraded layer off to reach sound resin underneath. That means every pass consumes some of a finite material.
The correct approach starts with the least aggressive combination that will do the work and steps up only where needed. Starting with a heavy cutting compound on a rotary because the panel looks bad is how a coach ends up with burn through at the edges and corners, which are always the thinnest areas.
Heat control is the other discipline. A machine polisher generates heat, gelcoat is a poor conductor, and a pad held in one place will scorch the surface. Working in the shade, keeping the pad moving and keeping the panel cool matter more on gelcoat than they do on automotive clear coat.
Graphics are the hard limit. Printed vinyl and painted graphics are much thinner than the gelcoat around them and they will not survive compounding. Those areas get masked and treated separately, usually with hand work and a dedicated protectant.
Keeping the finish once it has come back
Compounding removes oxidation. It does nothing to prevent the next round, and a freshly cut gelcoat surface is actually more vulnerable than it was before, because the surface is open and there is less material left.
Protection is the whole point of the exercise. A sealant or a wax with genuine ultraviolet blockers, reapplied on a schedule rather than once, is what makes the restoration last. On a coach that lives outdoors in the inland valleys, that schedule is more frequent than most owners expect.
Covered storage does more than any product. Where a covered space is available in West Covina, it more than pays for itself in finish life, and it protects the roof sealant at the same time.
Washing habits matter too. Grit left on a chalked surface is abrasive, and washing a dry chalked panel drags that grit across an already fragile finish. Rinse thoroughly before any cloth touches the coach.
When restoration stops making sense and paint takes over
There is a point where compounding is throwing labor at a surface that cannot come back. The honest indicators are consistent: hazing that will not clear at any grade, gelcoat that has thinned to the point where cutting risks going through, and graphics that have degraded past the point of looking acceptable next to a restored panel.
At that point the choice is refinishing. A full exterior refinish involves stripping or thoroughly preparing the existing surface, addressing any crazing or repairs underneath, sealing and priming appropriately for the substrate, then applying color and clear.
The upside is that a painted coach can be maintained like a vehicle rather than like a boat. Modern automotive clear coat with a proper ultraviolet package outlasts gelcoat in this climate by a wide margin, and it can be polished in future without the same thin material anxiety.
The downside is cost and time, and the fact that graphics have to be reproduced in vinyl or sprayed. That is a real decision and it deserves a written estimate rather than a guess. Our estimates are written at the shop and the estimate policy is explained plainly before any work is authorized.
Deciding which path your coach is on
The most useful thing an owner can do before calling anyone is the test panel described above. Half an hour with a mild compound in one square of the worst side answers the question that a photograph cannot.
Bring that information with you. If the test square came back to gloss, you are in restoration territory and the conversation is about scope and protection. If it did not, you are in refinish territory and the conversation is about preparation, graphics and scheduling.

Parking orientation. In a storage lot the south and west facing sides take a much heavier annual ultraviolet dose than the north and east facing sides, and inland valley skies are clear for a large part of the year. It is very common for one side of a coach to polish back to gloss easily while the other side has almost nothing left to polish. Rotating how the coach is parked evens the exposure out over time.
Will compounding damage the decals and graphics on my RV
Yes, if they are included in the process. Printed vinyl and painted graphics are far thinner than the surrounding gelcoat and abrasive work removes them quickly. They get masked off and treated separately by hand with a dedicated protectant. If your pad is picking up strong color from a graphic area, stop immediately, because that color is the graphic and it will not come back.
Is painting an RV better than restoring the gelcoat
It depends on how much gelcoat is left. Restoration is faster and less involved while there is sound material to cut back to. Once the surface will not clear at any grade, a refinish is the path that lasts, and modern clear coat with a proper ultraviolet package holds up better in inland Southern California than aged gelcoat does. The trade offs are cost, time in the shop, and reproducing the graphics.
