The Pre Trip Walk Around to Do Before a Summer Run

Short answer. A body focused pre trip walk around takes under an hour and catches the failures that end trips: open roof seams, a loose awning rail, a slide seal that has taken a set, a cracked lift point and lights that have lost their seal. Do it two weeks out, not the night before, so there is time to fix what you find.
Why this gets done two weeks before departure
The night before a trip is the worst possible time to discover a problem. Everything you find becomes a choice between leaving late and leaving with a known fault, and neither of those is a good week away.
Two weeks out is the useful window. It is long enough to get a shop appointment, long enough to order a part with a normal lead time, and short enough that nothing new will have developed between the inspection and the departure.
This walk around is deliberately about body, roof, structure, seals and mounted equipment. Those are the items that turn into water damage, into a slide that will not close in a campground, or into a roadside problem with a piece of the coach detaching. We do not cover engine or drivetrain checks here.
Allow an hour. It goes faster once you have done it twice, and the point is to do the same sequence every time so the things you skip are the things you chose to skip.
Start on the roof, because everything else is downstream
If the roof is walkable and you are comfortable up there, go up in the morning while the membrane is cool. If it is not walkable, work from a ladder at each end and use a phone on a pole for the middle. Do not step on a roof that was not built to carry you.
Look at every bead from the side rather than from above. You are hunting for an edge that has released, which is invisible from overhead and obvious from a low angle. Front cap seam first, then the rear cap, then the air conditioner shroud base, then every vent and fan flange.
Check the membrane itself for tears, punctures and any area that has been abraded by a branch. Look at where water sits after a wash, because standing water sitting on an aging bead is a leak waiting for the first storm of the season.
Check the ladder mounts, solar mounts and any antenna base for movement. Those are fastened through the roof and every one of them is a potential entry point.
Work the sides for seals, seams and soft spots
Come down and walk the coach slowly, one side at a time, with the sun low if you can arrange it. Raking light shows waves, steps and bulges that vanish in overhead light.
- Sealant at every window frame, checking for cracks, shrink back and lifted edges
- The awning rail along its full length, sighted from one end for straightness
- Compartment door flanges and their sealant, especially on the low side
- Clearance lights and any exterior fixture, pressed lightly to check the seal
- The lower corner moldings and the belt line trim
- A flat palm run across each panel, feeling for softness rather than looking for it
- Any bubble, wave or step in the sidewall, marked with tape so you can watch it
Slides, seals and the rooms that have to close in a campground
Run each slide out and back in while you watch it, and watch the room rather than the switch. The two sides should move together. A room that leads on one side, hesitates, or makes a different noise near the end of travel is telling you the mechanism has lost sync, and that is worth resolving before you are relying on it in a campground.
Look at the bulb seal along the top edge with the room out. A seal that has taken a permanent set will show a flattened section that no longer springs back, and that flattened section is where water tracks into the wall on the first wet night.
Check the slide topper if you have one. Fabric that has stretched, a roller that is no longer level or a tube that has drifted out of position all lead to water pooling on the topper and pouring into the room when it retracts.
Look at the floor of the room where it meets the coach, inside and out. Staining, a dark line at the flooring edge or a musty smell in that area is water that has already been getting in.
Hitch, frame and the load carrying points
On a fifth wheel, look at the pin box and the area of frame it is bolted to. You are looking for cracked paint at a weld, rust streaking from a fastener, elongated bolt holes and any visible distortion. Cracked paint in a straight line along a weld is a crack until proven otherwise.
On a travel trailer, look at the A frame, the coupler, the safety chain attachments and the jack mounting. The same rules apply: paint that has lifted in a line, rust bleeding from a joint, or a bracket that has started to move relative to the frame.
Check the frame under the coach where the suspension hangers attach. Hanger brackets are welded to the frame and they carry every bump the road delivers. Cracks at hanger welds are a known failure and they are visible from the ground with a light.
Look at the bumper, the spare carrier and any hitch mounted rack. Those are cantilevered loads on light structure and they crack their mounts far more often than owners expect.
Doors, steps, and the equipment you rely on daily
Open and close the entry door several times. A door that has to be pulled or lifted to latch means the frame has moved, and on a coach that is usually a structural message rather than a hinge message.
Cycle the entry step fully. Look at the mounting bracket where it bolts to the frame, because that mount takes the shock of every step someone takes and the fasteners work loose over time.
Check the compartment doors. Latches that no longer align, hinges that have pulled, or a door that has to be pushed to close all point back at either a mounting problem or, on a low compartment, water damage in the surrounding structure.
Look at the awning one more time with it partly extended, watching both arms move together, then stow it and confirm the travel lock engages properly. An awning that unrolls on the freeway does very expensive damage very quickly.
What to do with what you found before you leave West Covina
Sort your findings into three piles. Things you can address yourself before the trip, things that need a shop and can wait until after, and things that should not leave on a trip at all.
The third pile is short but it is real: an open roof seam heading into any chance of rain, a cracked frame or hanger weld, a pin box with a crack at a weld, an awning with a damaged arm, or a slide that will not close reliably. Those are trip enders wherever you happen to be when they go.
The middle pile is worth booking now for after the trip so the appointment exists before the summer schedule fills. Sealant that is aging but intact, cosmetic gelcoat work and small delamination areas all fit here.

Run it out and back in while watching the room instead of the switch. Both sides should move together at the same rate. Is a small sidewall bubble a reason to cancel a summer trip
Usually not on its own. Mark the edges with tape, photograph it, and watch whether it changes over the trip. What matters is whether it is dry or wet underneath, and that is a shop determination rather than a roadside one. What would change the answer is softness under a flat palm, staining inside at the same spot, or a bubble that is growing week to week, since all three point at active water.
