What an expandable trailer trades away to fold down

An expandable gives you a hard sided box that tows short and low, then produces two or three sleeping areas that hang out past the ends of the trailer once you are parked. That is a genuinely useful package for a family towing with a mid size vehicle. The trade is that the ends of the trailer, which on a conventional travel trailer are two rigid caps carrying structure, become large hinged openings closed by a fabric wall.

That changes the load path. The front and rear of the box are no longer boxes. They are open frames with a bed platform hinged at the floor line and a header above. Torsional stiffness has to come from the sidewalls, the roof and the chassis instead, which is why expandables put more emphasis on the frame and why a bent tongue or a set in the rails shows up as bed ends that stop latching cleanly rather than as a cracked cap.

It also changes what the owner has to inspect. On a conventional trailer the front cap either leaks or it does not. On an expandable, the front opening has a fabric seam, a hinge line at the floor, latch hardware, a support arm on each side, a bed rail with hold down fasteners, and a header seal above. Six items instead of one, and each one has its own failure mode. That is the whole reason we approach these trailers differently from a standard bumper pull.

Bed end canvas: seams, windows and what fails first

Bed end fabric is a coated canvas or a vinyl laminate stitched into panels with clear vinyl windows and zippered screens. In this climate, the failures are driven by ultraviolet exposure and by being folded. The stitched seams at the corners, where the fabric has to turn a frame member and change plane, are where the thread breaks down first. Owners find a pinhole of daylight at a corner, then a run in the seam, then a tear.

Clear vinyl windows go through a predictable decline. They craze, then yellow, then go brittle, and the point where they finally split is almost always along the stitch line where the needle perforated the material. A window that has gone brittle also stops folding cleanly, so every closure puts a crease in the same place until it cracks. Owners who fold the ends with a towel over the window and who avoid closing them in direct heat get years more out of the fabric.

The worst thing for a bed end is being closed damp. Fabric folded wet stays wet against the bed end decking, and the decking underneath goes soft. That is the origin of most rotted bed end floors we replace. If you have to close a wet trailer to get home from the river, open the end and dry the fabric in the driveway the same weekend rather than storing it folded. When fabric replacement is part of a repair, we address the hardware and the deck at the same time, because a new set of canvas on a warped bed rail will not seal any better than the old set did.

Lift hardware, hinges, latches and the support arms

Every bed end is a hinged platform with something holding it up. Depending on the model that is a pair of folding steel support arms, a strut assist, a torsion assist at the hinge, or a combination. The hardware is not complicated, but it lives outdoors, it gets loaded by people sleeping on it, and it is frequently closed with a corner of bedding or a pillow in the way. That last item is responsible for more bent support arms than anything else we see.

A bed end that has become hard to lift is usually reporting one of three things. The strut has lost pressure, which is normal after years and shows as a bed end that no longer holds itself partway open. The hinge line has picked up corrosion or has loosened at its fasteners so the platform is binding. Or the platform itself has sagged at the outboard corners, changing the geometry enough that the arms no longer fold and unfold on their intended arc.

Latch hardware fails quietly. Over center latches are meant to pull the bed end tight against its seal and hold it there under road load. When the hook deforms, the striker loosens or the fastener holes in the bed rail strip, the latch still clicks but no longer applies real clamping force. The bed end then moves on the road, works the seal, and the trailer starts taking water at highway speed while looking perfectly closed. We replace deformed hardware, install proper backing where fasteners have stripped, and set the latches so each end actually compresses its seal evenly across the opening.

The header above a bed end opening is the seam that matters most on this type. It is where the roof line, the fabric attachment and the top of the opening all meet, and the sealing is done with a bead behind a trim piece. When that bead shrinks, water enters at the top of the opening, runs down inside the end wall structure and appears as a stain on the interior ceiling line or as softness in the wall next to the opening. It is a roof to wall failure with a fabric wall attached to it.

The bed end decking has two water sources. The obvious one is the fabric, either through a torn seam or through being folded damp. The less obvious one is the hinge line where the bed end platform meets the trailer floor. That joint is sealed and it flexes every time the end goes up or down. When the seal at that hinge line gives up, water gets between the bed end deck and the trailer floor, and both start to soften at the joint. Owners feel it as a spongy spot right at the step off from the floor to the bed platform.

Repair of a rotted bed end deck means removing the fabric attachment and the bed rail, cutting the decking back to sound material, replacing or repairing framing where it has corroded or split, bonding in new decking and then reattaching hardware into real backing. It is finish work as much as structural work, because the deck has to end up flat and true or the fabric will not tension evenly and the latches will not pull square.

The rest of the trailer: body, frame and finishes

Everything a conventional travel trailer suffers from, an expandable suffers from too. The roof to sidewall seam still fails. The corner moldings still open. The laminated sidewalls still delaminate when water reaches the substrate, whether that substrate is luan or azdel. Windows still leak when the butyl hardens. Being able to fold down does not exempt the box from any of it.

The chassis is generally a light single or tandem axle frame with leaf springs and a simple A frame tongue. Because these trailers are frequently towed by mid size SUVs and half ton trucks, they get used by people who are new to towing, and the low speed jackknife into a driveway post is a common first repair. The tongue takes a set, the coupler moves off centerline, and the trailer starts tracking poorly. On a light frame, that set happens with less force than it would on a heavier trailer.

Finish work on this type is mostly filon or gel coated fiberglass sidewalls with a vinyl graphics package, plus painted or molded end caps above and below the openings. Repairs are laminate, fair, prime, block and refinish, with the graphic either sourced as a kit, reproduced or broken to a natural line. Bringing an expandable trailer in from West Covina

Questions we get asked

One of my bed ends will not latch tight anymore. What is causing that?

Work through it in order. Check whether the over center latch hook has deformed or the striker has loosened, because that hardware stretches over time and still clicks without applying real clamping force. Check whether the fastener holes in the bed rail have stripped out, which is common on softwood or thin backing. Then look at whether the bed end platform has sagged at the outboard corners, which changes the geometry so the latch cannot reach square. We fix the hardware, add backing where fasteners have stripped, and correct the platform if it has moved.

Can bed end canvas be repaired, or does the whole set have to be replaced?

Small punctures and short seam runs in otherwise sound fabric can be repaired. The decision comes down to the condition of the material overall. Fabric that has gone stiff and chalky from ultraviolet exposure will simply fail somewhere else shortly after a patch, and vinyl windows that have crazed and yellowed cannot be restored. When we replace, we do the end as a complete unit and address the bed rail, the hardware and the deck at the same time, because a new set of canvas on a warped rail will leak exactly like the old one did.

The floor gives right where the bed platform meets the trailer floor. Is that serious?

It is worth addressing now. That step off is a sealed hinge line that flexes every single time the bed end goes up or down, so the seal there works harder than any other joint on the trailer. When it opens, water gets between the bed end decking and the trailer floor and both soften at the joint. Caught early it is a localized decking repair and a reseal. Left alone, it spreads into the trailer floor structure and into the wall framing at the corner, and the scope grows considerably.

My support arms are bent on one side. Can they be straightened?

Usually they get replaced rather than straightened, because a bent arm has already yielded and it will fold in the same place again. The more useful question is why it bent. Nine times out of ten, an end was closed with bedding, a pillow or a corner of fabric in the way, and the arm took the load instead of the platform. We replace the arm, check the hinge line and the platform for any set it may have taken, and verify the end folds through its full arc without binding before it goes back to you.

Is there a way to keep the bed ends from rotting if I store the trailer outside?

Yes, and it is mostly discipline rather than product. Never fold an end while the fabric is damp, and if you have to on the road, open and dry it within a day or two of getting home. Keep the fabric out of standing sun when the trailer is stored, either with a cover or in shade. Fold with something soft over the vinyl windows so they do not crease in the same line every time. And check the header seam and the hinge line seal each season, because those two are what let water into the deck from above and below.
