Three rows, one pack: drawing the line on an R1S repair
An R1S is a family vehicle with a very large battery underneath it, and both halves of that sentence shape the repair. On the body side we handle collision damage, structural correction, aluminum and composite panel work, glass, refinish and the equipment mounted to the vehicle. On the electrical side we handle the disable and isolate sequence and nothing beyond it. Battery packs, drive units, inverters, onboard chargers and thermal management stay with Rivian Service, and we do not perform engine, drivetrain or DOT inspection work.
That split is not a limitation we apologize for. It is how a competent shop stays inside its trained scope. What it means practically is that we can take an R1S with a crushed rear corner and put the structure, the panels, the glass and the finish back to where they belong, while anything that involves opening the high voltage domain goes to the people credentialed for it. We tell you which is which at the estimate, before any teardown.
The isolate step happens before the first tool comes out. The vehicle is shut down and the high voltage system is isolated to procedure, and it stays that way through every operation that involves heat, sparks, cutting or fastener removal near the pack. All of it takes place in the building at Yorba Linda. We do not offer mobile service, so plan on bringing the vehicle in, and call ahead if it is not safe to drive.

Liftgate alignment, rear glass squareness and the wind noise nobody can locate
The single most common R1S complaint after a rear end hit is a liftgate that used to close with one pull and now needs a shove. Owners assume the latch. The latch is usually fine. What has moved is the aperture: the rear body opening has lost a few millimeters of square, so the striker no longer meets the latch in the same plane and the weatherstrip compresses unevenly across the top.
We measure the opening at the corners and diagonally before touching hardware, correct the surrounding structure, and only then set striker position, hinge alignment and gasket contact. Adjusting the latch to a distorted opening is how a vehicle leaves a shop closing fine and comes back three months later with a stress crack at the hinge area and a wet cargo floor. Rear glass gets the same treatment, because glass bonded into an out of square opening carries a load it was never designed to carry.
Wind noise at highway speed is the symptom that sends people back and forth between shops. It is almost always a seal that is compressing on one side and not the other, and it is almost always upstream of where the noise seems to come from. We chase it with smoke and with a water test on a squared opening rather than by stacking foam behind trim, which is the usual field fix and which never lasts through a summer in the San Gabriel Valley.

Water in the third row: where it actually enters an R1S
A damp third row footwell or a wet cargo floor liner sends owners looking at the liftgate seal. The seal is a suspect, not a conclusion. On a three row SUV the water paths that reach that area include the rear quarter glass bond line, the roof rail and crossbar mounting points, the taillamp housing gasket, the rear body drain grommets and the liftgate seal itself. Any of them will present identically inside the vehicle, because water travels along structure before it drops.
Our sequence is to dry the interior fully, pull the liner and trim so the substrate is visible, and then flood test in zones from the bottom up rather than washing the whole back of the vehicle at once. Testing from the bottom up is what isolates the entry. Washing everything at once tells you the vehicle leaks, which you already knew. It takes longer and it finds the actual path instead of replacing a seal and hoping.
Once the entry is identified, the repair usually reaches further than the seal. A leaking crossbar mount means a pulled fastener and a compromised sealer bed that has to be cleaned and rebuilt, not caulked. A quarter glass bond line leak means cutting the glass out and preparing the flange properly. Corrosion under a wet cargo floor gets treated before anything goes back in, because covering a damp substrate with new liner just relocates the problem out of sight.
Quarter panels, D pillar and the rear structure of an R1S
Rear corner damage on an R1S loads a lot more than the quarter skin. The D pillar, the roof rail, the rear body panel and the floor structure behind the third row all share that load path, and how far the energy travelled decides whether this is a panel job or a structural job. We measure before we quote. A quarter panel that looks like a single crease at the arch can sit on a pillar that has moved, and the tell is usually a liftgate gap that reads wrong on one side.
Joining method matters here more than on a conventional SUV. Sections of the R1S structure use self piercing rivets and structural adhesive rather than spot welds, and repairing to procedure means rebuilding the joint the way it was made. That takes specific tooling and a fixed cure schedule. It is slower than welding and it is the difference between a rear structure that behaves as designed and one that has been improvised.
Aluminum panel discipline applies throughout. The work happens in a segregated clean area with dedicated tooling so that steel particulate never lands on a bare aluminum surface, because that contact starts a galvanic corrosion cell that surfaces months later as blistering under the finish. Bare aluminum gets sealed the same day it is exposed. Owners rarely ask about this, and it is one of the things that separates a repair that holds from one that looks fine at delivery.

Ride height, windshield cameras and getting an R1S calibrated after glass work
The R1S carries forward sensing hardware at the windshield and additional units behind the front fascia, and all of it reads the world relative to where the vehicle sits. Air suspension means that reference moves. Before we measure anything or coordinate any calibration, the vehicle is set to a known ride height and verified there, because a calibration performed at the wrong height produces a system that is confidently wrong rather than obviously broken.
Windshield replacement is the trigger owners underestimate. Taking the glass out disturbs the camera bracket at the mirror mount, and the replacement glass has to be the correct specification with the correct bracket geometry. After the new glass is bonded on a properly prepared pinch weld and has cured, the camera requires recalibration. That work is scheduled as part of the repair. Static calibration needs a level floor, controlled lighting and measured target placement. Dynamic calibration needs a defined drive cycle.
The same applies to fascia work. A bumper cover removal that disturbs a radar bracket ends with a recalibration requirement even though nothing looks different. We replace bent brackets rather than straightening them, because a bracket that has yielded once will not hold position. When calibration has to be completed by Rivian Service rather than in shop, we say that up front and coordinate the appointment instead of handing you a vehicle with an open item.
Glacier White, Limestone and Midnight: refinishing an R1S body side
R1S body sides are long and largely uninterrupted, which is the hardest geometry in refinish. There is no natural break where a hard edge can hide, so blend planning happens at the estimate rather than in the booth. Glacier White, Limestone, El Cap Granite, Rivian Blue and Midnight each behave differently across that span, and the pearl and multi stage finishes shift with viewing angle and with film build in ways a code alone will not predict.
We spray out cards for every repair, check them against the vehicle under shop lighting and then outside in daylight, and hold the card at the same angle as the panel it has to live next to. For multi stage colors the mid coat film build is verified on the card, because two panels mixed from the same formula can read differently if one carries more mid coat than the other. Only when the card reads correct at both light sources does a panel get shot.
Blend maps on a three row SUV usually reach a door beyond the damaged panel, and sometimes into the roof rail area where the surface curves away from the eye. We tell you the panel count before work starts so there are no surprises on the final bill or in the mirror. Trim, badges and roof rails come off rather than getting masked wherever the part removes cleanly, because a masked edge is visible for the life of the vehicle.

My R1S liftgate needs two pulls to close since a parking lot bump. Is the latch bad?
Probably not. Two pulls almost always means the rear opening has lost square, so the striker meets the latch out of plane and the weatherstrip compresses unevenly. Adjusting the latch to a distorted opening masks it for a few months and then comes back as a stress crack and a wet cargo floor. We measure the aperture at the corners and diagonals, correct the structure, then set striker, hinge and gasket contact in that order and water test before release.
Where does water in the third row of an R1S usually come from?
Not usually where it appears. Do I need a recalibration if you only replace the windshield on my R1S?
Yes. The forward camera mounts at the mirror bracket, and removing the glass disturbs it. The replacement glass has to carry the correct bracket geometry, it has to be bonded on a properly prepared pinch weld, and after cure the camera requires recalibration. Ride height is set to a known reference first, since the sensors read the road relative to where the vehicle sits. We schedule that work as part of the repair rather than leaving it open.
Can you repair a rear quarter on an R1S or does the whole panel have to be replaced?
It depends on where the damage sits and what moved behind it. A crease in the middle of a quarter with no structural movement often repairs well. Damage at the wheel arch that has reached the D pillar or the roof rail is a sectioning and structural job, and the joints get rebuilt with the specified rivets and structural adhesive rather than welded. We measure before quoting so the answer is based on the vehicle rather than on the photograph.
Is my Rivian repair going to take longer than a normal SUV repair?
Generally yes, and it is worth knowing why. Structural adhesive has a fixed cure schedule that cannot be rushed, aluminum work happens in a segregated clean area at a slower pace, calibration has to be scheduled and verified, and some Rivian parts carry a lead time.
