What correction actually removes from a finish

Correction removes material. That is the whole mechanism. A compound or polish carried on a rotary or dual action machine abrades a very thin layer off the top of the clear or gelcoat, taking the damaged surface with it and leaving a fresh, flat, reflective one behind. Anything that sits above the deepest point of the defect can be leveled. Anything below it cannot.

That means oxidation, swirl marks, wash induced marring, light water etching, bug and tar staining, and scratches you cannot catch with a fingernail are all correctable. Deep gouges, chips through to primer and any defect you can feel with a nail are not. Those need filling and refinishing, not polishing.

The practical value on a large vehicle is enormous, because a coach that has never been corrected is usually carrying a decade of accumulated surface damage that reads as one general dullness. Removing it does not just clean the vehicle. It restores the depth and the reflection, which is what makes a rig look cared for rather than merely washed.

Compounding, polishing and refining: what each step does

Compounding is the aggressive step. A cutting compound on a wool or microfiber pad removes the most material and levels the deepest defects the process is going to address. It also leaves its own haze and micro marring behind, which is expected. Compounding alone is not a finished result, and a shop that stops there is handing you a surface that will look dull again in a few months.

Polishing follows and refines what compounding left. A finer abrasive on a foam pad removes the compound haze and brings up gloss. On a dark color or a high line finish, a third refining step with an ultra fine polish and a soft finishing pad is what produces reflection rather than merely shine.

The correct number of steps depends on the condition of the finish and how much film is available to work with. We measure with a mil gauge on any vehicle that shows evidence of prior refinishing, because there is no undo on correction. Once material is gone it is gone, and a panel that has already been polished repeatedly may have very little clear left above the base.

Oxidized gelcoat or failing clearcoat: know which one you have

This distinction decides whether correction is the right service at all. Oxidized gelcoat is a surface condition. The resin binder at the top of the gelcoat has broken down and is releasing loose pigment, which is the chalk that transfers to your hand. There is usually plenty of sound gelcoat underneath, and cutting the dead layer back is exactly the right repair. Travel trailers, fifth wheels and older Class C shells fall into this category constantly.

Failing clearcoat is a different animal. Clear that has lost adhesion is delaminating from the base, and it presents as flaking, peeling or a milky patch with a visible edge. You cannot polish that back. Compounding a peeling clear removes the loose material and exposes unprotected base color, which then fades rapidly. The only correct repair is refinishing the panel.

The two get confused because both look dull from twenty feet. Up close they are unmistakable: chalk that transfers is oxidation, an edge you can catch with a fingernail is failure. We check every vehicle before quoting correction, and we will tell you when what you actually need is paint. Selling a correction on a peeling coach is a service that looks good for six weeks.

Correcting a 40 foot vehicle is a different job than correcting a car

Surface area is the obvious difference. A large Class A carries several times the paintable area of a sedan, on panels that are mostly flat and mostly vertical, plus a cap that curves in two directions and slide fascias that stick out into everything. Working the upper third of a coach requires scaffolding or lifts, which is why RV correction is quoted in hour bands rather than in packages.

Panel behavior differs too. Filon and gelcoat generate heat under a machine faster than automotive clear, and thin filon over luan can be burned through by an inattentive operator. Slide fascias and roof caps get the worst ultraviolet exposure on the vehicle, so they usually need more aggressive work than the sidewalls right next to them, and they are also the panels where the least material is left. Matching effort to condition panel by panel is the skill.

There is also the question of what the vehicle sits on. Correction generates dust and residue. Doing it properly means the vehicle is inside, on a clean floor, under controlled lighting so the crew can actually see the defects they are chasing. Correction done in a parking lot under a shop light produces a vehicle that looks great until the sun hits it. We do not offer mobile service, and this is one of the services where that matters most.

When correction is the wrong answer

If the clear is peeling, correction is wrong. If the gelcoat has oxidized so deeply that cutting back to sound material would take you through to the laminate, correction is wrong. If the panel has already been polished several times and the mil gauge shows minimal film remaining, correction is wrong. In all three cases the honest recommendation is refinishing, and we would rather tell you that at the estimate than take the smaller job.

Correction is also the wrong first move on a vehicle with active water intrusion, delamination or unrepaired collision damage. Polishing a sidewall that is going to be cut open next month is money spent twice. Sequence matters: structure, then seal, then body, then paint, then correct, then protect.

Where correction is exactly right is on a coach whose finish is intact but tired. Those vehicles frequently look like they need a repaint and do not. A full cut and polish on a gelcoat fifth wheel that has never been corrected produces a change owners genuinely do not expect, at a fraction of what refinishing costs. Bringing the rig in and letting the estimator look at it in daylight is the only way to know which category you are in.

How do I know if my RV needs polishing or a repaint?

Run a clean hand down the sidewall. If chalk transfers to your palm and you cannot catch any edges with a fingernail, that is surface oxidation and it polishes out. If you find flaking, peeling or a milky patch with a lifted edge, the clear has failed and no amount of polishing brings it back. Bring it by the shop and the estimator will look at it in daylight and tell you straight.

How long does paint correction take on a 36 foot fifth wheel?

Multi step correction on a vehicle that size is measured in days, not hours. Surface area is large, access to the upper third requires lifts, and each panel gets compound, polish and often a refining pass. A single stage cut and polish on a rig in decent shape moves faster than a full multi step correction on heavily oxidized gelcoat. The hour band on this page covers that spread.

Will polishing remove the scratches from an automatic truck wash?

Usually yes. Brush and wand marring sits in the very top of the clear or gelcoat and levels out with a polish step, sometimes with a light compound first. Scratches you can catch with a fingernail go deeper than the correction process reaches and need filling and refinishing. We check the depth before quoting so you know which category your vehicle is in.

How often can the same RV be polished before it runs out of clear?

There is no fixed count, which is why we measure. A mil gauge tells us how much film is above the base on any vehicle that has been corrected or refinished before. A well maintained coach that gets a light polish every couple of years will go a long time. One that has been aggressively compounded repeatedly may have very little left. Protecting the finish afterward is what reduces how often correction is needed at all.

Should I get a coating after correction or is that a separate visit?

Same visit is better. Correction leaves a bare, freshly leveled surface, which is the ideal condition to apply a ceramic coating or sealant to. Waiting means the corrected surface starts collecting contamination again and needs a decontamination wash before protection goes on.
