When a color has no formula to look up

Plenty of vehicles that come through the shop have no usable code. Custom coaches and show rigs were mixed to a one off formula that nobody wrote down. Bus conversions and skoolies were sprayed by a previous builder in whatever was on the shelf. Food trucks and vehicles branded for a business carry colors that exist as a logo file, not as a paint formula. And plenty of ordinary vans have simply lost the jamb tag to a previous repair.

In all of those cases the process is the same: build the formula from the vehicle or the target rather than from a database. A spectrophotometer reading of the actual surface gives us a starting point. From there our paint lead adjusts by hand, sprays cards, clears them and compares. That loop repeats until the card disappears against the target.

This work is measured in bench hours, not spray hours, and it is the reason a custom match line appears separately on estimates. It is also the reason we do it before the vehicle goes into the booth rather than during, because a booth occupied by a rig waiting on a color is a booth nobody else can use.

Brand colors, fleet standards and turning a logo into sprayable paint

A company color usually arrives as a print reference or a screen value. Neither is paint. Converting one into a sprayable formula requires deciding what the color should look like in daylight on a large curved surface, which is a different problem than matching ink on paper. Large panels read darker and more saturated than small samples, so a color chosen off a chip often disappoints once it covers a whole cargo van.

For businesses running several vehicles, the practical goal is not matching the logo exactly. It is matching the other vehicles exactly. We ask which unit is the reference, read that unit, and build to it. If the reference vehicle has faded, we tell you and let you decide whether the new unit should match today's fleet or the original standard.

We document every custom formula we mix and provide it with the vehicle, along with the variance information and the spray out card. That way the next unit that joins the fleet, or the next repair after a parking lot hit, has something concrete to work from instead of starting the whole matching process again.

Matching a new part to a body that has already aged

This is the most common custom match request and the least understood. A new bumper cover, a replacement fiberglass fairing, a new compartment door or a replacement cap arrives in primer or in a factory shade. The body it is going onto has been sitting outside in the San Gabriel Valley for eight years. Matching to the original code produces a part that looks obviously new, which is exactly the thing owners are trying to avoid.

The correct approach is to read the aged body, mix to that reading, and then blend the new part's edges into the surrounding surfaces where geometry allows. On a bumper cover with clean break lines all around, no blend is needed if the match is right. On a fairing that sits against a painted sidewall, blending is required.

Substrate is a second variable. A new SMC or urethane part accepts and reflects color slightly differently than the aged gelcoat next to it, and flexible parts need an additive that can shift the appearance of a metallic. We spray the card on the same substrate as the part whenever the difference matters.

Hand tinting and the let down panel

Spectrophotometer readings get you close. Hand tinting closes the last few percent. Our paint lead adjusts a formula in small measured increments, sprays a card, clears it and compares against the target in daylight. Adding toner is easy. Removing it is not, so the discipline is small steps and frequent checks.

For any color with a mid coat, meaning tri coat pearls and candies, the let down panel is the tool that matters. It is a single card sprayed so that one section carries one mid coat, the next carries two, the next three. Holding that card against the vehicle tells you not just which formula is right but how many passes the sprayer needs to make. Two coats versus three on a pearl is the difference between a match and an obvious repair.

Every approved card is kept with the repair order and photographed with the job file. If the vehicle comes back for additional work later, we are not starting over.

Why two panels sprayed from the same cup can still look different

Application changes color, especially with metallics. Gun distance, air pressure, fluid delivery, the number of passes and even the temperature in the booth affect how flake orients as the material flashes. A panel sprayed at a slightly greater distance lets flake settle more randomly and reads lighter. A panel sprayed wetter lets flake lay flat and reads darker.

Panel orientation contributes as well. A horizontal surface like the top of a slide fascia or the shoulder of a front cap receives material differently than a vertical sidewall, and metallic will read differently on the two even when everything else is identical. Where it matters, we position parts to match how they sit on the vehicle.

This is why we do not simply mix a formula and start spraying on a custom job. The card is sprayed with the same gun, the same pressure and the same technique the panel will get. If a different technician is going to shoot the vehicle than shot the card, they shoot a card of their own first. That single step prevents the most common cause of a match that fails on the vehicle after passing on the bench.

Questions we get asked

Can you match my company color across four vans that were painted years apart?

We can bring them to a consistent appearance, but you have to pick a reference. If the oldest van has faded, matching everything to it means the whole fleet reads faded. Most operators pick the newest unit as the standard and plan to refinish the outliers over time. We read the reference, document the formula and keep it on file so future units match without repeating the process.

How do you match paint when there is no code anywhere on the vehicle?

We read the vehicle. A spectrophotometer takes multiple readings from clean, polished areas and returns candidate formulas from the variance deck. Our paint lead sprays those onto cards, clears them and checks them against the vehicle in direct daylight and under corrected shop lighting. Custom coaches, bus conversions and previously repainted rigs are matched this way routinely.

Why does my new bumper cover look brighter than the rest of the truck?

Because it was painted to the original factory shade and the rest of the truck has been aging in the sun since it was new. The fix is to match the cover to the vehicle as it exists today rather than to the code, and to blend into the adjacent panels if there is no clean break line. That is standard practice on any repair to a vehicle more than a few years old.

Can you match a color from a photo or a paint chip I bring in?

A physical sample is workable. A photo is not, because screens and cameras both shift color and neither reproduces how a finish behaves at different angles in daylight. Bring the part, the chip, a fuel door, a piece of trim, anything physical that carries the target color. We will read it, mix to it and spray a card for you to approve before anything goes on the vehicle.

Do I get the formula for a custom color you mix for me?
