Dock Strike Damage: What a Box Truck Rear Frame Really Takes

Short answer. A dock strike loads the rear frame, not just the bumper. If the roll up door binds, the rear sill sits low or the hinge line has shifted, the box structure took the hit. We measure the rear frame at our Yorba Linda shop and repair or section it before any door hardware gets touched.
What actually happens when a box truck backs into a dock
A driver backs in, the dock bumpers are worn thin or set at the wrong height, and the rear of the box contacts concrete instead of rubber. At walking speed the impact looks like nothing. The bumper takes a scuff, the driver pulls forward, and the truck finishes the route. Nobody writes it up.
The problem is that a box body is a light structure carrying a heavy job. The rear frame assembly is a welded or bolted ring made up of two corner posts, a header across the top and a rear sill across the bottom. That ring is what keeps the opening square. It is also the anchor for the roll up door track, the hinge points on a swing door, and on many units the lift gate mounting plates.
When the sill or a corner post takes a shove, the ring stops being square. Everything hung on that ring inherits the problem. The door that used to roll up with one hand now needs a shoulder. The lift gate platform no longer sits flush against the sill when it is stowed. A swing door that closed with a light push now needs the driver to lift the free leaf.
Where the load goes after the bumper stops moving
Dock bumpers are sacrificial. They are supposed to crush and absorb. What we see on units coming from West Covina distribution work is that the bumper brackets often outlast the bumper block, so once the rubber compresses, steel meets concrete and the load runs straight up the bracket into the rear sill.
From the sill the load has two paths. It can travel forward along the longitudinal understructure, which is a set of steel or aluminum crossmembers and long rails under the floor. Or it can travel up the corner post into the header. Which path it takes depends on where the contact landed and how the sill is tied in.
A low centered hit usually pushes the sill up and back, and the understructure crossmembers behind the rear axle absorb it. A corner hit at bumper height twists the post, and the twist shows at the top of the door opening, not the bottom. That is why we always check the header diagonal even when the visible damage is all at the floor line.
Signs the rear frame moved even though the door still rolls
Fleet managers rarely bring us a truck the day it happens. They bring it when a driver complains. By then the symptoms have had weeks to develop, and the useful ones are subtle.
- The roll up door drags on one side of the track and runs clean on the other
- Daylight along the top corner of the door when it is closed, on one side only
- The counterbalance spring feels correct at the bottom of the travel and heavy at the top
- A lift gate platform that no longer sits flat against the sill in the stowed position
- Cracked paint or a lifted seam at the joint where the corner post meets the side panel
- Rivet heads at the rear corner that look proud, polished or ringed with grey dust
- A rear door seal that shows a wear line on one side and none on the other
Rear sill, corner post, header: what each part is doing
The rear sill carries the vertical load. It is what a hand truck rolls over and what a lift gate platform rests against. It is usually the heaviest single piece of the rear ring, and on many box bodies it is a formed channel or a rectangular tube with a wear plate on top.
The corner posts carry the rack loads. They keep the top of the opening located over the bottom of the opening. They also carry the roll up door track and the vertical seal. A corner post that has been pushed in half an inch at the bottom will move the top of the track out of plumb, and the door panel will bind before it reaches the curve.
The header ties the two posts together across the top and carries the door drum or the top of the track curve. It is the piece most often ignored during a quick repair and the piece most often responsible for a door that still does not work after the sill has been straightened.
How the rear frame gets measured instead of guessed
Squareness on a rear opening is checked with diagonals. We measure corner to corner in an X pattern across the opening and compare. On a body that left the factory square, those two numbers should be within a small fraction of an inch of each other. A difference you can read with a tape is a difference the door hardware can feel.
We also check plumb on both posts with a level and check the sill for level across its width, then compare the sill height to the frame rails on both sides. If the left rear sits lower than the right by a measurable amount and the suspension checks out visually, the sill or the understructure took a set.
For units where the hit ran forward into the understructure, we pull the floor at the rear bay and look at the crossmembers directly. A bowed crossmember is obvious once the plywood is off and invisible while it is on. This is body and structure work. We do not perform engine or drivetrain work on commercial units, and we do not issue compliance inspections of any kind.
Straighten, section or replace the rear frame assembly
Light damage on a steel sill often comes back with heat and hydraulic pressure. We anchor the body, apply a controlled pull along the original load path, and work the metal back with the door removed so nothing binds during the pull. On aluminum sills the calculus changes, because aluminum does not tolerate the same reheating and reworking that mild steel does.
Moderate damage usually gets sectioned. We cut the damaged length of sill or post out at a clean joint, fabricate or order a replacement section, and splice it in with the joint located away from a high stress corner. Sectioning is faster than a full assembly replacement and it keeps the rest of the body untouched.
Heavy damage, especially anything that has taken the posts out of plumb in two planes, gets a full rear frame assembly. That is a longer job. The side panels have to be released at the rear, the roof cap or drip rail has to come loose at the back edge, and the floor has to be freed at the sill. On a wrapped unit the graphics at the rear panel will not survive the process, so we plan the reprint into the job from the start.
Keeping a West Covina unit earning while it is being fixed

We do not offer mobile service. All of this work happens in shop, because a rear frame pull requires anchoring and measuring equipment that does not travel. What we can do is sequence the job so the unit is here for the shortest possible block. How do I know if a dock hit did structural damage or just cosmetic damage
Check the door before you check the paint. Close the roll up door and look for daylight at the top corners. Then measure the door opening diagonally, corner to corner, both directions. If those two numbers differ by more than a small fraction of an inch, the rear ring moved and the damage is structural. A scuffed bumper with a square opening and a door that still rolls freely is cosmetic. A clean looking bumper with a binding door is not.
Can the rear sill be repaired or does the whole rear frame have to be replaced
Most rear sills can be repaired or sectioned. Light deformation on a steel sill often comes back with a controlled pull. Moderate damage gets the bent length cut out and a fabricated section spliced in away from the corner. Full rear frame assembly replacement is reserved for units where both corner posts are out of plumb or the header has been pushed back, because at that point every measurement is chasing a different reference.
Will the roll up door work again after the frame is straightened
Usually yes, but the door has to be evaluated separately. Straightening the opening removes the cause of the binding. It does not undo damage already done to the track, the rollers or the panel hinges while the door was being forced. We pull the door before the structural work, inspect the track for flat spots and the rollers for flat sides, then reinstall and adjust once the opening measures square again.
Does the lift gate have to come off for rear frame work
Often the mounting plates have to be released even when the gate itself is fine, because the plates bolt or weld directly to the sill and the understructure. We document the plate position before removal so the gate goes back at the same height and the platform still meets the sill flush. If the plates show cracks at the weld toes, which is common after a dock strike, they get addressed while the gate is off.
How long is a box truck usually in the shop for rear frame work
A sectioned sill with door reinstallation is typically a two to four day job. A full rear frame assembly with side panel release, floor freeing and refinish runs closer to a week to ten working days depending on parts. If the unit is wrapped, add reprint time for the rear graphics. We give a working day range at the time the estimate is written, not a single date, because supplements after teardown are common on this repair.
