Fiberglass Hood Repair on Freightliner, Kenworth and Peterbilt

Short answer. Fiberglass hoods crack at hinge points, latch areas and the corners that get leaned on. Most cracks are repairable with a laminated backing and a properly feathered surface repair. Replacement makes sense when the mounting structure is broken, the crack crosses a hinge boss, or lead time on a used hood beats the labor.
Why fiberglass hoods crack where they do
A modern conventional truck hood is a large fiberglass or sheet moulded composite structure that tilts forward as one piece. It is stiff for its weight but it is not tough in the way steel is. It resists bending and then it cracks rather than deforming.
The cracks land in predictable places. Hinge attachment points at the front take the entire weight of the hood every time it is tilted, and they take shock loading when a hood is dropped rather than lowered. Latch areas at the back take the closing force. Fender tops and the area above the wheel arch take the weight of anyone who has climbed on the hood to reach the windshield.
Vibration does the rest. A crack that starts as a hairline at a hinge boss grows a little on every rough section of highway. Fleets running West Covina to the Inland Empire and back put a lot of cycles into a hood without ever hitting anything.
Reading the damage before deciding anything
The first thing to establish is whether you are looking at a gelcoat crack or a structural crack. A gelcoat crack is in the surface layer only. It looks like a spider web or a single fine line, it does not go through, and the panel is still rigid on either side of it.
A structural crack goes through the laminate. Press either side of it and the two halves move independently. From the back side you will see the crack as well, often with fibers pulled and frayed at the edges.
Impact damage adds a third category: starring. A blow to fiberglass produces a radial crack pattern spreading from the contact point, and the laminate behind it is usually crushed over a wider area than the visible cracks suggest. Starring almost always needs a backing laminate, not just a surface repair.

- Radial pattern from an impact point: starring, laminate is crushed behind the surface

How a laminated hood repair is done
The hood comes off. Repairing a large composite panel in position means working overhead with resin, and it means you cannot properly access the back side, which is where most of the actual repair happens.
The crack gets stop drilled at each end so it cannot run further while it is being worked. Then the back side is ground back to sound laminate, tapering out well beyond the crack so the new material has a wide bonding area. A steep grind is a weak repair.
New reinforcement goes on the back: layers of glass mat or cloth wet out with the appropriate resin, laid up to build back the original laminate thickness and beyond. The layers are staggered so no two edges land at the same place, which is what keeps the repair from telegraphing.
Only then does the front get addressed. The face is ground out along the crack, filled with a compatible material, blocked flat and feathered into the surrounding surface. Done in this order, the surface repair is only cosmetic and it never has to carry load.
Hinges, mounting and the parts fleets forget
A hood that has cracked at the hinge points frequently has a hinge problem, not a hood problem. Worn hinge bushings let the hood drop into place with an impact instead of a controlled swing, and that impact is what cracked the boss.
The same goes for hood tilt assist components. When those are tired the hood falls the last part of its travel, and it lands on the same points every single time. Repairing the crack without addressing the mechanism means the crack comes back.
Latch and striker alignment matters too. A hood that has to be slammed to latch is being flexed every time it is closed, and that flexing works on the same points as the tilt shock. We check latch engagement and adjust before we send a repaired hood back out.
Our work here is body, structural and equipment mounting. We do not perform engine or drivetrain work, so anything behind the hood other than the hood mounting itself needs a different shop.
Repair or replace: the honest comparison
Repair usually wins on cost for a single crack, a starred impact area, or damage confined to a panel field away from mounting hardware. A laminated repair on that kind of damage is a fraction of a new hood and it is structurally sound when it is done properly.
Replacement usually wins in three situations. When mounting inserts or hinge bosses are broken out of the laminate, because rebuilding a moulded insert location to original strength is very difficult. When the damage covers a large percentage of the panel, because the repair labor overtakes the part. And when the hood has been repaired several times already and is becoming a patchwork of different stiffnesses.
Availability shifts the answer. New hoods for current model Freightliner, Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks are generally obtainable, but lead times move around, and hoods for older or discontinued models can be a long wait or a used part with unknown history. On an older unit a good laminated repair is often the faster path back to service.
Paint is the other factor. A replacement hood arrives in primer or in a generic color and has to be finished to match a cab that has been in Southern California sun for years. That refinish work is the same whether you repair or replace, so it should not drive the decision.
Refinishing a repaired hood so it matches the cab
Fiberglass has to be sealed properly before color. Bare laminate and body filler both absorb, and a hood that goes to color without correct sealing will show a dull patch over the repair within weeks as the substrate draws solvent out of the coating.
Match is the hard part on fleet trucks. Cab paint fades, and a hood painted today in the factory code will not equal a cab that has been earning for six years. On a large single panel like a hood there is nowhere to blend, so the match has to be worked out on a spray out card and adjusted before anything is sprayed on the part.
Where the color has drifted far enough that no adjustment gets there, the honest options are to blend into the cab side panels or to accept a visible difference. We show the fleet the spray out against the cab and let them decide rather than surprising them at delivery.
Fleet graphics and any striping on the hood have to be reproduced. On a wrapped unit that means a reprint of the hood panel, which brings back the same match question in vinyl instead of paint.
Turnaround and getting the truck to Yorba Linda
A single structural crack repair with refinish is commonly a three to five working day job. Cure times drive the schedule more than labor does, and they cannot be compressed without compromising the laminate.
The truck does not have to sit here for all of it if the fleet can spare the hood. On some units we can take the hood alone, do the laminating and refinish, and reinstall in a short visit. That works well for fleets that can move the unit to a yard duty rotation in the meantime.
We do not offer mobile service. Composite laminating needs controlled temperature and humidity to cure correctly, and refinish needs a booth. Both are shop functions.

Is a repaired fiberglass hood as strong as a new one
A properly laminated repair restores the original laminate thickness and adds bonding area beyond the damage, so the repaired area is typically stiffer than the original panel around it. What matters is preparation. A wide feathered grind, staggered reinforcement layers, and a stop drilled crack tip produce a repair that outlives the rest of the panel. A quick filler job on the face with nothing behind it does not, and that is what gives composite repair a poor reputation.
Can you fix a hood crack that runs through a hinge mounting point
Sometimes, but it is the hardest case. Hinge bosses are moulded features with inserts or thickened laminate, and rebuilding one to carry the full weight of a tilting hood through thousands of cycles is difficult. We assess the extent of the damage around the boss and the condition of the insert. If the insert is loose in the laminate or the surrounding material is crushed, we recommend replacement, because a boss that fails in service drops the hood.
How long does a fiberglass hood repair take
Plan three to five working days for a structural crack with refinish. Cure time between laminating steps sets the pace and it is temperature dependent, so a January job in Yorba Linda takes slightly longer than the same job in July. Large or multiple cracks, or damage that also requires hinge work, push it toward a week. We give a working day range at the estimate rather than a single date.
Will the repaired hood match the rest of the cab paint
We work at it, but a hood is a large single panel with nowhere to hide a blend. If the cab has faded significantly, matching the original factory code will not look right. We spray out a card, hold it against the cab in daylight, and adjust the mix until it reads correctly. Where the gap is too large, the options are blending into the cab sides or accepting a visible difference. We show you before we spray, not after.

Yes, and those are often the units where repair makes the most sense. New hoods for discontinued models can be unavailable or a long wait, and used hoods arrive with damage history you cannot see.
