Delamination or Just a Blister? How to Tell Them Apart

Short answer. A blister is a lifted coating over sound structure. Delamination is a bond failure between the skin and what is behind it. Tap for a hollow note, press for softness, check the edges for a defined rim, and look at what is above it. Blisters stay small and local. Delamination spreads and softens.

Two different problems that look identical from ten feet

An owner walks past the coach and sees a raised area on the sidewall. That single observation covers at least three distinct conditions with wildly different consequences and costs.

A coating blister is a lift in the paint or gelcoat surface only. The structure underneath is intact. It is a finish problem and it is usually a small one.

Delamination is a loss of adhesion between the outer skin and the substrate or framing behind it. The panel has lost the stiffness it was contributing to the wall and, depending on cause, may have wet substrate inside it.

The third condition is substrate failure, where the material behind the skin has swollen or broken down. That looks like delamination and it is the more serious version of it.

Telling them apart takes about ten minutes and no special tools, and it determines whether you are looking at a modest cosmetic repair or a wall rebuild.

The tap test and how to do it so it means something

Tapping is the primary diagnostic and most owners do it wrong by starting on the suspect area. You need a reference first.

Tap a section of wall you know is sound, well away from the bubble, using a knuckle or the plastic handle of a screwdriver. Listen carefully. That is what bonded wall sounds like on this coach, and every coach sounds slightly different.

Now work toward the suspect area in a grid, tapping every few inches. A bonded panel gives a tight, higher pitched click. A debonded area gives a dull, hollow, lower note. The transition is usually distinct enough that you can hear the edge.

Mark the boundary with low tack tape as you find it. This is the single most useful thing you can do before calling anyone, because the debonded area is almost always significantly larger than the visible bulge, and knowing the real extent is what sizes the repair.

A coating blister does not change the tap note at all. The structure behind it is intact, so it sounds exactly like the wall around it.

The press test, and why a flat palm beats a fingertip

Press the suspect area with a flat palm, not a finger. A fingertip finds local flexibility that is completely normal on a large thin panel and it produces false alarms.

A flat palm is looking for two different things. Give, meaning the panel moves inward under moderate pressure and returns, indicates the skin is unsupported over an area. Softness, meaning the surface feels spongy and the return is sluggish, indicates the substrate itself has lost strength.

Give without softness usually means dry delamination, most often from an impact. That is the repair path with the best outcome, because injection and clamping can restore the bond.

Softness means the substrate is wet or has broken down. Adhesive will not bond to it and there is nothing solid to bond to, so injection is not an option and the material has to be replaced.

A coating blister does not move under a flat palm at all. It is a thin lift over solid material.

Reading the edges and the shape

The perimeter of the raised area tells you a great deal, and it is visible if you look from a low angle rather than straight on.

  • A sharply defined round rim you can feel with a fingernail suggests a coating blister
  • A soft undefined edge that fades into the panel suggests delamination
  • A round or oval shape away from any penetration suggests impact delamination
  • A long area following a seam suggests bond line failure or a leaking joint
  • A shape that starts at the bottom of the wall and works up suggests water sitting low
  • Several small blisters in a cluster on a painted surface usually indicates a coating problem
  • An area directly below a window, a rail or a light points at water at that penetration

What is above it, and why that question settles most cases

Water travels down. So the most informative thing about any suspect area on a sidewall is what sits above it.

If there is a window, an awning rail, a clearance light, a compartment flange or a molding above the affected area, check the sealant on it carefully. Cracked, shrunk or lifted sealant plus a hollow sounding area below it is a water story, and the repair has to start at the sealant.

If there is nothing above it and no history of an impact, look at the seams. Bond line failure along a seam happens on older coaches simply as the original adhesive ages.

If the coach has a known impact history at that spot, and the area presses with give but no softness, you are most likely in dry delamination, which is the best of the available outcomes.

Check the interior at the matching location in every case. Staining, an opened panel seam or a musty smell in a nearby cabinet confirms water regardless of what the exterior looks like.

How each condition actually gets repaired

A coating blister is a finish repair. The lifted material is removed back to sound coating, the area is prepared, and the finish is rebuilt and blended into the surrounding surface. On a gelcoat coach that may mean laminating and refinishing the area rather than simply repainting it.

Dry delamination over sound substrate is injected and clamped, or on larger areas vacuum held while structural adhesive cures across the full region. Done properly the panel regains its stiffness and the repair is invisible.

Wet or failed substrate means the skin comes off over the affected area, the substrate is replaced back to sound material, and new skin is bonded and blended in. That is a much larger job and it is the reason for catching this early.

In every case, if water is involved, the entry point is repaired first. Rebonding a panel while the leak above it is still open is work that will be undone by the next wet season.

Bring your tape outline. If you have marked the boundary of the hollow area, photographed it in raking light and noted whether it presses with give or with softness, you have done most of the diagnostic work already.

Bring a note of what is above it and whether the sealant up there looks sound. That single detail decides whether we are chasing water or repairing a bond.

Do not have anyone inject or patch it before it is properly assessed. Injection into a wet cavity is wasted material and it makes the eventual repair messier.

How do I know if a bubble on my RV wall is serious

Tap it and press it. Tap a sound area of the same wall first to get a reference note, then work toward the bubble. A dull hollow note means the skin has debonded from what is behind it, which is structural. Then press with a flat palm. Give without softness suggests dry delamination, which repairs well. Softness means the substrate itself has failed, which is the serious version. A blister changes neither the sound nor the feel.

Can a paint blister turn into delamination over time

Not directly, since they are different failures at different depths. What can happen is that both come from the same cause. If water is getting into a panel, it can lift the coating in one place and break the bond in another, and the blister you noticed first is a sign to look harder at the whole area. A blister with no moisture behind it stays a blister.

Is the delaminated area always the size of the bubble I can see

Almost never. The skin is stiff enough to lie flat over a debonded region until pressure or heat pushes it out, so the visible bulge is usually the middle of a much larger loose area. Mapping the boundary with a tap test and marking it with tape routinely reveals a region several times the size of the bulge. That real extent is what determines whether the repair is an injection or a panel job.

Can I inject delamination repair adhesive myself

We would not advise it, and the main reason is that injection into a wet or failed substrate is worse than doing nothing. There is nothing solid for the adhesive to bond to, the material fills a cavity that should have been opened and dried, and it makes the eventual proper repair messier and more expensive. Establish whether the substrate is dry and sound first, which means probing rather than guessing.

Does delamination mean my RV has water damage

Not necessarily. Impact delamination happens with no water involved at all: the skin flexes, springs back, and the adhesive underneath lets go over a larger area than the contact. That version presses with give but no softness and repairs well. Water caused delamination presses soft, usually sits below a penetration, and often shows staining or a musty smell at the matching interior location. The two look the same from outside.
