## Sliding door tracks, rollers and what a curb strike actually does

The sliding door is the most complicated moving assembly on a Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster, and it is also the one most likely to meet a curb, a pole or a shopping cart. It rides on three tracks with rollers at each, and the whole thing depends on the body opening staying square.

After a strike the symptoms follow a pattern. The door drops slightly at the rear edge. It starts to catch at the last inch of travel. The seal stops touching along the top, so wind noise increases and dust or water gets in at the rear corner. Owners often try to fix it by adjusting the striker, which moves the latch point but leaves the door sitting on the tracks incorrectly, and the roller wears faster from then on.

The real repair starts with the opening. We check the aperture for squareness, straighten the pillar or lower track area if it moved, then service the tracks and replace worn or seized rollers before adjusting the door itself. Adjustment comes last. Doing it in that order is what keeps the door working a year later instead of a month later.

## High roof fiberglass, pop tops and cracks that start at a corner

Vans that started as a low roof and gained height through an aftermarket fiberglass top, and vans with a pop top lift system, both add a fiberglass component to a steel vehicle. The two materials move at different rates, and the joint between them is where trouble starts.

Fiberglass tops crack at corner radii and along the bond line to the roof. The crack usually begins as a hairline that is only visible when the surface is wet or at a low sun angle, then travels each time the body flexes. A pop top adds a lift mechanism with hinges, gas struts or scissor arms, and if one side binds, the top no longer seats evenly, which puts a permanent twist into the shell and stresses the canvas at one corner.

Repair is laminate work, not filler work. We grind the crack out to a V, lay in structural mat and resin on both faces where access allows, rebuild the contour, then prime and refinish so the repaired area matches the surrounding surface. On a pop top, the mechanism has to seat evenly before any cosmetic work, because a top that closes crooked will crack again in exactly the same place. It depends on how your policy was written. A standard auto policy typically covers the chassis and factory equipment, and a conversion may need to be scheduled with an appraisal to be included. Check with your agent before you need to know. On our side, we document the build in the estimate with photographs and a written description of what was damaged, which gives an adjuster something concrete to evaluate rather than a general description.

### Can you fix rust starting at a seam on my Sprinter before it spreads?

Yes, and earlier is much cheaper. Seam rust starts where two panels overlap and moisture sits in the joint, and it works outward from inside the seam, so what you see on the surface is smaller than what is happening underneath. The repair means cutting back to sound metal, treating what remains, replacing panel sections where the metal is gone, then sealing the seam properly and refinishing. Painting over it delays the same job by a year.

### My pop top does not close evenly anymore. Is that the canvas or the mechanism?

Almost always the mechanism or the shell, not the canvas. Canvas that is torn or stretched is a symptom of a top that has been closing crooked and loading one corner. We check the lift arms, hinges and struts for a side that binds or a mount that has shifted, correct the seating, then address the shell and the canvas. Replacing canvas on a top that still closes unevenly gets you a new tear in the same corner.

### Do you work on Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster conversions or only Sprinters?

All three, plus older Chevrolet Express and Ford E series builds. The construction differs in useful ways: a ProMaster is front wheel drive with a lower floor and wide flat sidewalls, a Transit has its own roof profile and rib spacing, and a Sprinter has a taller high roof option and different body panel geometry. What stays constant is the approach, which is respecting the conversion behind the panel while repairing the vehicle around it.

### How long will my van be at the shop for a typical collision repair?

For a single panel with paint and no interior involvement, plan on about a week.
