## NCV3 or VS30: identify the generation before anything is ordered

Sprinter owners frequently describe a problem without knowing which generation they are describing, and the two are different enough that the answer changes. The NCV3 ran from roughly 2007 into 2018 in the North American market. The VS30 arrived for 2019 and revised the body structure, the door hardware, the electrical architecture and the interior. If you are looking at a van and are unsure, the dashboard is the fastest tell: NCV3 has a conventional instrument binnacle and a small display, while VS30 introduced the newer infotainment layout and a redesigned door panel.

The distinction matters most on door hardware and on trim. NCV3 sliding door components and VS30 sliding door components are not interchangeable, the tracks run differently, and the latch and lock arrangement changed. Ordering the wrong generation's parts is a common source of delay on Sprinter repairs, so we confirm from the vehicle identification rather than from the model year an owner remembers, since production years and model years do not always line up.

Body panel repair is broadly similar across the two, but the structural detail is not identical, and where a repair touches a pillar or a rocker section we follow the procedure for the specific vehicle. That is more important than it sounds on a van, because a Sprinter's structure is doing the job that a frame does on a body on frame truck. ## The sliding door in detail: upper, center and lower assemblies

A Sprinter sliding door hangs from three points. The upper roller runs in a track above the aperture and locates the top of the door. The lower roller runs in a track at the sill and carries a share of the weight. The center roller runs in a long track pressed into the body side above the rear wheel arch, and it is the assembly that manages the door's swing outward as it starts to open. That center assembly does the most work and it is the one that fails most.

A worn center roller bearing lets the door drop at the rear edge. The owner notices that the door needs a shove, that it no longer latches on the first try, and that the gap at the rear edge is wider at the bottom than at the top. Left alone, the door contacts the aperture, the paint wears through at the contact point, and corrosion starts there. The lower roller arm bends when a door is forced against a curb, a snowbank or a loading obstruction, and a bent arm changes the door's path so it binds at a specific point in the travel rather than throughout it.

Tracks are the other half. On NCV3 bodies the center track sits relatively low and open, so it collects road spray, grit and eventually corrosion. A track with corrosion scale in it will destroy a new roller quickly, which is why replacing rollers without cleaning and assessing the track is a repair that comes back. Where a track has corroded through or deformed, it gets repaired or replaced rather than cleaned and reused. On any door job we finish by verifying the gap is even at all four edges and that the seal compresses evenly all the way around.

## Where a Sprinter body corrodes and how it progresses

Sprinter corrosion follows a very consistent map. The bottom edge of the sliding door, where the inner and outer skins are joined and where water sits in the door bottom if the drains are blocked. The rear wheel arch, working from the inner lip outward. The lower edges of the rear barn doors, for the same drain related reason. The rocker seam. And wherever somebody drilled a hole for a rack, a shelf, an antenna or a light and did not seal it.

It always starts inside. By the time you see a bubble on the exterior, the steel behind that bubble has been corroding for a while and the affected area is larger than the visible mark. That is why sanding a bubble, filling it and painting over it produces a repair that fails within a year or two: the corrosion source is still present on the inside face and it simply works back out through the new finish.

The correct repair depends on how much sound metal is left. Surface corrosion with full thickness steel remaining gets stripped back to bright metal, treated, primed and refinished, with the inside face addressed through the cavity. Perforation means cutting out the affected area and welding in new metal, following the panel repair procedure for that location, then sealing the seam and treating the cavity before refinishing. On a rear wheel arch or a lower door skin that is often the honest answer, and it is far better value than a filler repair that returns.

## Rear barn doors, hinges and the aperture behind them

Sprinter rear doors are tall, heavy and hung on hinges bolted to the rear aperture. On a working van they open and close dozens of times a day, they get caught by wind in an open parking lot, and drivers routinely hang on the door edge to step up into the cargo area. All of that loads the hinge in a direction it was not designed for, and over enough cycles the door sags.

The sequence after that is predictable and it is worth interrupting early. The sagged door no longer aligns with its striker, so the driver slams it harder. The harder slam transmits load into the aperture. The aperture starts to deform. Now the door will not align even with new hinges, and the repair has moved from hardware to bodywork. A door that has started needing a slam is a door worth looking at.

The repair sequence is to establish whether the aperture is still square, correct it if it is not, replace or rebuild the hinges, align the strikers so the door latches with normal effort, and verify the seal compresses evenly. Where the door skin itself is damaged at the lower edge from corrosion, that gets addressed at the same time, since the door is already off. The Sprinter body side above the rocker is comparatively flat, which is good news and bad news for refinishing. Good, because there is no complicated crown to reproduce. Bad, because a flat panel shows every imperfection at a low sun angle, so blocking discipline matters more than it would on a shape with more curvature. A repair that is not blocked flat under a guide coat will read as a shadow on a Sprinter body side every afternoon.

Fleet colors are their own conversation. A company running vans in a specific corporate white or a custom color needs the repaired van to match the rest of the fleet, not just the panel next to the repair. ### Do you remove and reinstall my shelving as part of a body repair?

Yes, and on most sliding door, body side or rear door repairs it has to come out for access. That is included in the scope and it is discussed at the estimate so the labor is not a surprise.
