## The roof cap seam is the leak, nearly every time

On a hightop conversion, a fiberglass cap is bonded to the van shell along a seam running the length of the vehicle. That seam sits in full sun, flexes every time the body flexes, and is the single most common water path on a converted van.

It does not announce itself. Owners find it as a stain in a headliner corner or a musty smell after rain, and by then the bond line has been open long enough for water to reach the substrate at the cap edge.

Recaulking over a failed structural bond buys a season and hides the progression. We open the seam and evaluate the bond itself, which is the version of this repair that lasts. On a van it is a defined job rather than an open ended one, so the estimate is reliable.

## Every hole someone drilled is a maintenance item

Solar panels, roof fans, antennas and racks all require penetrations through the roof, and each one is a water path for the life of the vehicle.

On an RV wall those sit in a relatively stable structure. On a van roof they sit in sheet metal that flexes with the body, so the sealant works harder and fails sooner. Owner built conversions frequently have more penetrations than factory ones and less consistent sealing behind them.

Any converted van in the shop for other work gets its roof penetrations inspected. It takes five minutes and it prevents a headliner and cabinetry job later.

## Cabinetry that was attached to sheet metal

A van body is not a framed RV wall. Cabinetry, bed platforms and equipment in a conversion are attached to sheet metal and to whatever structure the converter added, and road vibration works those attachment points continuously.

The symptom is a fastener that will not stay tight or a cabinet that develops a small amount of movement. Both point at the mounting area rather than at the hardware, which is why replacing the screw does not hold.

Reinforcing the attachment area is the durable correction. It also matters structurally, because a heavy cabinet working loose over years enlarges its own holes and eventually damages the body panel it is mounted to.

## The chassis half still needs automotive standards

Sprinter, Transit and Promaster chassis carry radar, camera and sensor hardware behind the front fascia and at the windshield. Any repair that disturbs those mounting positions requires scan and calibration before the van goes back on the road.

That is a safety requirement, not a line item to negotiate away. A radar sensor aimed a fraction of a degree off reports the wrong distance, and the systems relying on it act on that reading.
