# Transit Buses Repair in West Covina

OCRV Center repairs transit bus bodies for West Covina area agencies and operators at our Yorba Linda shop. ## Where the body shop scope ends on a transit bus

A transit bus carries more systems per foot than almost anything else on the road, so the first useful thing we can tell an operator is what we are not touching. OCRV Center works on the body: exterior panels, fiberglass and composite structure, the frames around doors and hatches, glass, floor structure, the mounting for equipment that bolts to any of it, and the paint and graphics over the whole vehicle. Propulsion, transmission, axles, air systems and brakes are not our work and we do not certify a bus for service.

The same line applies to the equipment that makes a bus a transit bus. Ramp and lift mechanisms, their motors, actuators and control logic belong with your equipment supplier or your own shop. What we do is the structure they mount into and the doorway they operate through, which is where the actual damage usually is. Fareboxes, destination sign electronics, camera systems and HVAC units are the same story: we repair and rebuild mounting, penetrations and sealing, not the units themselves.

All of it happens in shop at Yorba Linda. We do not offer mobile service and we do not work in an operator yard. A coach comes to the building, gets walked with an estimator with the skirt panels off where needed, and stays through the repair. From West Covina it is roughly 22 miles, generally 30 to 45 minutes, out the 10 or the 60 west to the 57 south and then the 91 east to Imperial Highway. ## Low floor ramp doorways, thresholds and the kneeling skirt scrape

The front doorway on a low floor coach does two jobs that fight each other. It is a passenger door that cycles hundreds of times a shift, and it is the frame that a ramp deploys through and lands against. Every ramp cycle loads the threshold and the lower door frame, and every kneel puts the skirt within an inch or two of the curb. Over a few years the doorway stops being square, and the symptoms show up as a leaf that drags on one side and a ramp lip that no longer sits flat on the sidewalk.

The diagnosis has to start with measurement rather than adjustment. We check the doorway opening diagonally, check the threshold for deflection along its length, and look at the floor structure immediately behind the threshold, which is where a repeatedly overloaded ramp lands its reaction. A threshold that has been driven downward at the outboard edge takes the floor pan with it, and shimming the ramp to compensate simply moves the load somewhere else in the structure.

Kneeling skirt damage is separate and much more visible. Every time the bus kneels at a stop with a high curb, a rolled gutter or a broken sidewalk edge, the lower skirt takes a scrape. What starts as paint loss becomes a shredded panel edge, then a panel that catches and tears back along its length, and eventually a mounting flange that has torn its fasteners. We rebuild the flange, replace or section the skirt panel, and where an operator keeps losing the same edge we can add a sacrificial rub strip so the next contact takes a replaceable part instead of the panel.

## Fiberglass caps, composite access panels and articulation area body work

The front and rear caps on a New Flyer Xcelsior, a Gillig Low Floor or a NABI coach are large fiberglass moldings, and they fail the way big composite parts always fail: cracks radiating from a mounting boss or an opening rather than dents. A front cap cracks at the headlight surround and at the bumper mounting boss, because those are the two places load concentrates. A rear cap crazes around the engine access opening from heat cycling combined with the flex of a door that is opened every day.

Repairing them is laminate work, not filler work. We drill the crack tip to stop it running, grind the crack out to a V from the show face, laminate structural mat and resin on the back side where access allows, rebuild the front face and the contour, then fair and refinish. On a cracked mounting boss we rebuild the boss and add material behind it, because putting a fastener back into the same thin laminate produces the same crack in a season. Where a cap has multiple cracked mounting points and wide delamination, replacement is the honest recommendation and we say so.

Composite skirt access panels are their own recurring complaint. They stop sitting flush, the latches miss their strikers, and mechanics start leaving them off. Nine times out of ten the panel is fine and the frame it hangs in has moved: a hinge mount has torn, a striker plate has loosened into wallowed holes, or the body opening itself distorted after a side hit. We square the opening, rebuild the hinge and striker mounting into sound structure, and set the panel to a consistent gap. On articulated coaches, the panels around the joint get creased from the constant relative motion, and those get replaced along with the torn joint fairing mounting.

## Securement anchors, stanchion bases and the floor structure they load

Wheelchair securement anchors look like small hardware and behave like structural attachments. Every securement cycle pulls upward and forward on a fitting that is bolted through a floor track or a plate into the floor structure. When an operator reports a rattling or a rocking anchor, the anchor itself is usually intact and the floor around it has wallowed out. Tightening the fastener at that point compresses damaged material and the looseness returns within a month.

The repair that lasts is done from the structure outward. We open the floor covering, look at the actual substrate, replace deteriorated floor material, and install backing that spreads the load into the subfloor and the crossmembers rather than into a single wallowed hole. Track sections that have pulled at one end are removed entirely, the mounting line rebuilt, and the track refitted straight so a securement fitting slides and locks along its full length. The floor covering and the transition trim go back afterward so the finished area is flat and sealed.

Stanchions and grab poles load the same way from the opposite direction. A stanchion base takes a lateral load every time a standing passenger catches themselves, and the base plate works against the floor at exactly the moment the bus is braking. Loose bases crack the floor covering, let water in, and then accelerate the deterioration underneath. We rebuild base mounting with backing plates, repair the floor material around it, reseal the penetration, and check the ceiling attachment at the top of the pole while we are in there.

## Destination sign housings, fareboxes, bike racks and roof hatch mounting

Front mounted bike racks are the single most damaged accessory on a fixed route bus, and the damage is almost never in the rack. The rack mounts to a plate on the front bumper structure, and every loaded bike plus every parking nudge cycles that plate. Cracks appear at the plate corners and at the weld toe on the bumper mount. We cut out cracked material, rebuild with correctly sized stock, tie the mounting into the bumper and body structure rather than into a fascia, gusset where the design allows, and refinish before the rack goes back on.

Destination sign housings take hits from tree limbs and from wash equipment, and the failure people notice first is water inside the bulkhead rather than the dented housing. Once the surround seal is compromised, water runs down inside the front bulkhead and the corrosion starts somewhere nobody looks. We repair or replace the housing structure, straighten the surround so it sits flat, rebuild the sealing surface, and address whatever the water already did behind it. The sign unit itself, its controller and its wiring go back to your electronics supplier.

Farebox mounting and roof hatch frames round out the list. A farebox pedestal is a load path into the floor structure at the busiest point of the bus, and its mounting deteriorates in the same way securement anchors do. Roof hatch frames distort from limb strikes and from technicians standing on them, and once the flange is out of plane the hatch leaks along one edge. We straighten or replace hatch frames, reseat and reseal them, and rebuild pedestal mounting into sound floor structure. The farebox internals and the hatch actuator stay with their suppliers.

## Exterior advertising panels, wraps and agency livery

Transit livery is a specification, not a design choice, and it usually involves several elements at once: an agency base color, a stripe or wave graphic with defined placement, fleet numbering in a specified position and size, route branding, and required exterior markings. When one panel gets repaired, all of that has to come back correctly or the bus looks wrong in a lineup. We record placement measurements before removal, refinish, then reinstall to those measurements rather than to a photograph.

Base color matching on a transit fleet has a wrinkle that fleet white does not. Agency colors are often deep, saturated blues, greens and reds that fade unevenly and that show a blend edge badly if the work is rushed. We spray out and verify against the actual body under shop light and daylight, then blend into adjacent panels. On a coach with a fiberglass cap next to steel or composite side panels, the substrates also take color slightly differently, which is one more reason spray out cards go on the actual bus before anything is shot.

Advertising panels and full wraps have to be sequenced correctly or they fail early. Vinyl applied over a finish that has not fully cured will lift at the edges the first time the coach goes through a wash cycle, and edges over a repaired seam are where that starts. So refinish comes first, cure time is respected, the substrate is cleaned and prepared properly, and then panels and wrap sections are installed. Where an agency uses an outside ad contractor, we coordinate the handoff so the bus is not going back and forth.

## Frequently asked questions

### The ramp on our low floor coach binds and no longer sits flat on the sidewalk. Is that the ramp?

Usually it is the doorway. A ramp lands its reaction load on the threshold and the floor structure right behind it, and after years of cycling the threshold deflects at the outboard edge. The ramp then sits at an angle even though nothing is wrong with it. We measure the doorway opening and the threshold before touching hardware, rebuild the landing surface flat, and repair the floor structure behind it. The ramp mechanism itself goes back to your equipment supplier.

### Our skirt panels are shredded from curb contact when the bus kneels. Can that be prevented?

Partly, yes. First we rebuild what is there: torn mounting flanges, sectioned or replaced skirt panels, and the fasteners that pulled through. Then, if a particular route keeps producing the same contact, we can fit a sacrificial rub strip along the lower edge so the next scrape takes a replaceable part instead of the panel itself. That will not stop a hard hit, but it turns a routine repeating repair into a much smaller and cheaper one.

### Can a cracked fiberglass rear cap be repaired or do we have to buy a new one?

Most can be repaired well. A crack or two radiating from an opening or a mounting boss gets the crack tip drilled, the crack ground to a V, structural mat and resin laminated on the back face where access allows, then the front face rebuilt, faired and refinished. Cracked mounting bosses get material added behind them. Where a cap has cracks at several mounting points plus wide delamination, replacement is the better outcome and we will tell you that with the part in front of you.

### Do you service fareboxes, destination signs or camera systems while the bus is in?

Not the units themselves. Farebox internals, sign controllers, camera electronics and their wiring belong with the suppliers who support them. What we handle is the structure they live in: pedestal and bracket mounting into sound floor or bulkhead material, housing repair, the surround that seals a roof or bulkhead penetration, and any corrosion or water damage that a failed seal already caused. Tell us at the estimate who is handling the electronics so nothing sits waiting.

### Our advertising panels started peeling right after body work. What went wrong?

Almost always sequencing. Vinyl applied before the refinish has properly cured, or over a substrate that was not cleaned and prepared, lifts at the edges the first time the coach goes through a wash. Repaired seams are exactly where it starts. We refinish first, respect cure time, prepare the surface, and then install panels and wrap sections. If an outside contractor handles your advertising, we coordinate the handoff so the bus is not shuttling between two schedules.
