## Plow mount frames, push frames and the chassis frame horns they load

Let us be honest about geography first. West Covina does not plow snow. What the San Gabriel Valley does have is contractors and agencies based down here who run winter contracts up the mountain and out into the high desert, and those trucks come back down for body work in the spring. That is the work we see: plow gear that spent a season taking impacts at low speed against fixed objects, then sat in a yard for eight months with salt residue still on it.

A plow mount is a bolted structural assembly that puts blade loads directly into the chassis frame horns. Boss, Western, Fisher and Douglas Dynamics mounts all share the same failure logic even though the hardware differs. The blade catches a raised manhole or a curb, the push frame stops instantly, and the load travels back through the mount into the frame horns. Nothing bends visibly, but the mount holes elongate and the frame horn takes a set nobody notices until the blade will not sit flat.

We repair that by measuring the frame horns first, not by rebuilding the mount and hoping. Where the horn has moved we straighten or section it, repair elongated holes with new material rather than oversized bolts, and rebuild the mount attachment so load spreads across the web instead of concentrating on the flange. Blade angling cylinders, lift rams and the hydraulic side of the plow go back to your equipment provider once the structure is right.

## Hitch plate cracking at the weld toe, frame extensions and doubler repair

The hitch plate is the single most common crack we find on a winter service truck. It is a flat plate welded to the frame rail, and the weld toe at its edge is a stress concentration by definition. Every blade impact and every hard stop cycles that toe. Cracks start hairline, hide under coating and road grime, and are usually found during a wash rather than during service. By the time the plate is visibly loose the crack has run into the rail itself.

Repairing that properly means removing the cracked plate rather than welding across the crack and calling it done. We grind out the crack in the rail, verify how far it has run with the coating stripped back, and rebuild with correctly specified plate. The new attachment gets a longer taper so there is no abrupt section change at the weld toe, which is what caused the original crack. Where the rail has lost section we let in new material with full preparation.

Frame extensions and doublers are the other half. Many of these trucks were extended or reinforced by whoever installed the plow package, and that work varies wildly in quality. We find flange drilling, short doublers that end right at a load point, and stitch welds where a continuous weld belonged. All of that gets corrected: holes closed with proper preparation, doublers extended past the load path, and attachment moved off the flange wherever the design allows.

## Spreader bodies and hoppers: brine, salt and a skin that fails from inside

A spreader hopper corrodes from the inside out, which is why the outside looks acceptable right up until it does not. Salt and liquid brine sit in the bottom corners and along the seams, and the coating on the interior is the only thing standing between the chemical and the steel. Once that coating is compromised at a weld or a fastener, the metal thins from behind. The first exterior sign is a blister line along the lower corner, then perforation in a patch rather than a single hole.

Let in repair is the durable answer on a Henderson, Monroe or Viking-Cives hopper. We cut out the affected skin back to sound steel, let in new material with proper weld preparation, and recoat both faces before the body goes back into service. Plating over a thin area is the repair we spend the most time undoing for people, because it traps moisture between the old skin and the plate and the corrosion continues underneath where nobody can see it.

Chute mounting and the rear structure of a hopper get their own attention. The chute hangs off the back and swings load into a bracket that is often the thinnest part of the whole assembly. Tailgate spreader mounting plates suffer the same way: the bolt holes elongate because the plate flexes, and once the joint goes into bearing it accelerates. We rebuild those brackets with correct plate, spread the mounting across more structure, and coat before assembly.

## Bumper cuts, headlight towers and mirror extension mounting

Almost every plow truck has had its front bumper cut to clear a mount, and how that cut was finished determines what happens next. A bumper that was simply sliced and left open loses its closed section, and the remaining ends start flexing in a way the part was never designed for. Cracks appear at the cut line and travel toward the mounting brackets. It looks cosmetic and it is not, because a flexing bumper works its brackets against the frame horns continuously.

The correct repair is to close the cut. We cap the open sections, add internal reinforcement so the bumper regains something close to its original stiffness, and rebuild the brackets where they have wallowed out. On municipal units we often fabricate a new bumper section entirely, because the original has already been cut twice and repaired once. Finished properly, the plow clearance stays the same and the bumper stops working itself apart over a season.

Headlight towers and mirror extensions are the parts drivers complain about long before anyone writes a repair order. Both raise a mass on a long lever, and both are usually mounted into sheet metal or a light bracket. Vibration cracks the mounting, the tower starts shaking, and the aim wanders. We rebuild the mounting into structure that can carry it, gusset where the geometry allows, and coat everything before installation. Lamps, harness and aim adjustment go back on afterward.

## Coating strategy for de-icing chemical exposure, beacons and unit markings

Coating a winter service truck is a different exercise from painting a delivery van. The finish is not fighting sun and rain, it is fighting magnesium chloride and sodium chloride brine that stays wet in seams for days. That means the system matters more than the color: proper media blasting or mechanical preparation, an epoxy primer built for chloride exposure, seam sealing at every lap joint, and a topcoat chosen for chemical resistance rather than gloss retention alone.

We treat the underside and the enclosed sections as part of the job rather than an upsell. Cavity coating inside box sections, coating the back face of any panel that gets let in, and sealing every fastener penetration are what make the difference between a spreader body that lasts eight seasons and one that perforates in three. On a truck that only works four months of the year, the eight idle months with residue still on it do most of the damage.

Markings go back on after the coating has cured. Municipal units carry a city seal, a unit number and a specified conspicuity pattern, and all of it is measured before removal so it returns to the same position. Beacon and light bar mounting is rebuilt at the same time, because roof mounted lights crack cab roof skin around their feet on trucks that spend their season on rough plowed surfaces. We reinforce those landings before the light goes back.

## Frequently asked questions

### Our plow mount is cracked where it ties into the frame horns. Can it be repaired in place?

Usually yes, but not by welding across the crack. We strip the coating back to find how far the crack actually runs, measure the frame horns because they often took a set in the same impact, then cut out and let in new material with proper preparation. Elongated mount holes get repaired with new plate rather than oversized bolts. If a horn has moved, straightening it comes before any mount rebuild or the blade will never sit flat.

### The hopper on our spreader is perforating along the bottom corners. Is a new body the only option?

Rarely. Corner and lower skin perforation on a Henderson, Monroe or Viking-Cives hopper is normally a let in repair. We cut back to sound steel, let in new material, and coat both faces before the body returns to service. What we will not do is plate over a thin area, because that traps brine behind the plate and the corrosion keeps running where nobody can see it. If the entire lower third is gone, replacement becomes the better value and we will say so.

### We cut the bumper for a plow mount and now the front end shakes. What went wrong?

The cut removed the bumper's closed section without anything replacing it, so the remaining ends flex. That flexing works the brackets against the frame horns and cracks start at the cut line. The fix is to cap and internally reinforce the open sections so the bumper recovers its stiffness, then rebuild any brackets that have wallowed out. On units that have been cut and repaired repeatedly we fabricate a new bumper section instead.

### What coating actually survives brine on a spreader body?

The system matters more than the product name. Proper mechanical preparation or media blasting, an epoxy primer rated for chloride exposure, seam sealer at every lap joint, cavity coating inside box sections, and a chemically resistant topcoat. Just as important is coating the back face of any panel we let in and sealing every fastener penetration. Most winter bodies fail in the eight months they sit idle with residue on them, not during the season itself.

### Do you work on the plow hydraulics or the spreader controls?

No. Lift rams, angling cylinders, pumps, valves, spreader drive motors and the control electronics all stay with your equipment provider.
