# Slide Out Motor and Gear Repair in West Covina

Slide motors fail from brush wear, heat and voltage drop, and the gears they drive strip when a room binds. OCRV Center replaces slide motors, gear assemblies, drive couplings and rebuild kits on Schwintek, Lippert and BAL systems in shop in Yorba Linda for West Covina RV owners.

**Ballpark range.** $750 to $7,500. Ranges are planning figures, not a quote. Final numbers come from a written estimate on your vehicle.

## How slide motors actually fail

Slide motors are permanent magnet DC motors with carbon brushes, and they fail in three ways. Brushes wear down until contact becomes intermittent, which shows up as a motor that runs sometimes and buzzes other times. Heat from repeated attempts against a bound room cooks the windings, which produces a burning smell and a motor that is weak afterward even when the bind is fixed. And bearings or bushings dry out and seize, which draws high current and trips the controller.

The single biggest contributor to motor failure is not age, it is repeated cycling against resistance. When a room binds and the owner keeps pressing the switch, the motor draws stall current every time, and stall current generates heat fast. A motor that would have lasted the life of the coach gets destroyed in an afternoon of trying to force a room that was stopped by a rolled seal.

Voltage drop is the second contributor. These motors are rated for a specific supply, and a house battery at low state of charge, a corroded ground, or a connector with green residue inside it all reduce the voltage reaching the motor. Lower voltage means higher current for the same work, which means more heat. That is why we measure at the motor under load rather than trusting a reading at the battery.

## Gear, gearbox and drive component wear

On Schwintek and Lippert In Wall systems the drive gear is nylon and it engages a metal rail. That pairing is intentional, because the nylon is meant to give up before the rail or the wall structure does. Stripped teeth are therefore a symptom rather than a root cause, and replacing the gear without finding out what stopped the room means shearing the new one soon after.

Gearbox wear on through frame electric systems shows as backlash: a pause between pressing the switch and the room moving, and a clunk when direction reverses. Some gearboxes are serviceable and some are replaced as an assembly. Where a rebuild kit exists for the system, using it restores the wear surfaces at a fraction of the cost of a complete drive replacement, which is why we check kit availability before quoting a full assembly.

Couplings and shafts fail at their fastener points. A set screw that has backed off lets the shaft spin inside the coupling, which produces a motor that runs with no room movement and often a rounded shaft that needs replacing along with the coupling. On cable systems the equivalent failure is a drum that has worn its keyway. All of these look like motor failures from the driver's seat and are not.

## Rebuild kits versus complete assembly replacement

Manufacturers offer rebuild kits for many slide drives, and they are frequently the right call. A kit typically includes the wear items: gears, bushings, hardware and sometimes the motor, at a substantially lower cost than a complete drive assembly with rails and mounting hardware. On a camper or trailer where the rest of the system is sound, a kit puts every wear surface back to new specification.

Complete replacement makes sense when the rail or rack itself is damaged, when the mounting structure has been pulled or distorted, when the system has an obsolete controller that cannot be sourced separately, or when the same drive has already been rebuilt once and failed again. The second failure usually means something about the installation or the room geometry is wrong, and replacing the assembly alone will not address that.

We quote both paths where both are viable and tell you which we recommend and why. Parts pricing follows our posted parts policy and special order items require a deposit at the time of order, which appears on the estimate before you authorize anything rather than as a surprise later.

## Preventing repeat motor and gear failures

A motor or gear that fails twice is telling you something the first repair did not address. The usual culprits are a room that is out of square, a rail that has shifted or bent, a soft subfloor at the opening that lets the room settle, a seal that is grabbing the room, or a supply voltage problem that was never checked. Every drive repair we do includes checking those items, because installing new parts into an unchanged environment is not a repair.

Maintenance habits matter afterward. Keep the rails clean and use only the lubricant the manufacturer specifies for that system, which for Schwintek means a dry film rather than anything oily. Keep the house batteries charged, especially before operating a slide on battery alone. Clear debris off the top of the room before retracting it, and never operate a slide with the room partially blocked inside.

The most valuable habit is stopping. When a room hesitates, stops or makes a new noise, stop cycling it and find out why. Almost every catastrophic slide repair we see started as a small problem that got forced through a dozen more times before anybody looked at it. Call (949) 799-3387 and describe what it did rather than trying to power through it.

## Motor and gear service for West Covina campers and trailers

This work is done in shop at the Yorba Linda facility, about 22 miles from West Covina, roughly 30 to 45 minutes on the 10 or the 60 west to the 57 south then the 91 east to Imperial Highway. Carbon Canyon Road to the 71 is the afternoon alternate. We do not offer mobile service, and slide drives frequently require interior trim removal and repeated cycling that needs a bay.

Most motor and gear jobs are measured in a day or a few days when parts are on hand. Common Schwintek and Lippert components move quickly. Model specific controllers, long rails and discontinued drive assemblies for older campers take longer to source, and we tell you the expected wait at the estimate rather than after you have committed.

When you call, have the unit year, make, floorplan and the affected room ready, and if you can see a label on the motor or the controller, read it to us. That one detail often determines whether we can stage the part before you arrive or whether we need to identify it at intake.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does my slide motor hum but not move the room

The motor is energized and trying to turn something that will not move, or it is turning something no longer connected to the room. On the mechanical side that means stripped gear teeth, a sheared pin, a loose coupling set screw or a seized bearing. On the supply side it can mean voltage low enough that the motor cannot break away under load. Stop cycling it as soon as you hear a hum, because that sound is stall current making heat.

### Can a slide out motor be rebuilt or only replaced

In practice they are replaced. The labor to access a slide motor is the same either way, brushes and bearings for these units are not stocked as service parts by most suppliers, and a rebuilt motor going back into the same wall means doing the access labor again if it fails. Where the manufacturer offers a rebuild kit that includes gears and hardware along with the motor, that is often the better value and we quote it that way.

### How much does it cost to replace a slide out motor

It depends on the system, the access required and whether the gears and rails also need attention. Camper and trailer slide rebuild kits fall in the published range on our prices page, and larger motorhome drives fall under the slide mechanism range. The estimate is written after we identify the exact drive and inspect what else is worn, since replacing a motor without addressing the cause of its failure is not a repair we are willing to sell.

### Will a new slide motor fix a room that comes out crooked

Usually not by itself. A crooked room on an independently driven system is a synchronization problem, and sync problems are normally caused by mechanical resistance on one side or by uneven supply voltage. A new motor with the same bound rail or the same low battery will drift again. We correct the mechanical and electrical causes, then reset sync, then cycle the room repeatedly before it leaves the shop.
