# Ceramic Coating Application in West Covina

## What a ceramic coating does and what it does not

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that cross links into a hard, thin, transparent layer chemically bonded to the surface it was applied to. Once cured it becomes a sacrificial barrier. Ultraviolet light, acid rain, bug residue, road film and hard water attack the coating instead of attacking your clear or your gelcoat. It is also extremely slick, which is why coated vehicles release dirt so easily and dry with far fewer spots.

What it does not do is make the vehicle impervious. A coating does not stop rock chips, it does not prevent scratches from a dirty wash mitt, and it does not repair anything that is already damaged. It also does not last forever. On a vehicle living outdoors in inland Los Angeles County, expect meaningful protection for a few years with proper maintenance, less if the rig is washed with harsh chemicals or brushes.

The honest value proposition on a large vehicle is time and consistency. A coated 40 foot coach washes in a fraction of the time an uncoated one does, holds gloss between washes, and does not need waxing on a schedule. On a vehicle with hundreds of square feet of surface, that difference compounds fast.

## Preparation is most of the job

A coating is only as good as the surface underneath it, and it locks in whatever is there. Applying one over swirl marks and oxidation seals those defects in for the life of the coating. That is why every coating we do starts with decontamination and correction rather than with the coating itself.

Decontamination means a proper wash, then chemical removal of iron particles and tar, then mechanical decontamination with a clay bar or clay media to pull embedded contamination out of the surface. On a rig that has been parked near industrial areas or driven behind trucks for years, this step alone changes how the surface feels.

Correction follows: compound and polish to level oxidation, swirls and water etching. Then a panel wipe with a dedicated solvent removes every trace of polishing oil, because coatings will not bond to residue. Only after the wipe does the coating go on, applied panel by panel, leveled by hand while it is still flashing, and inspected under lighting from multiple angles to catch high spots before they cure.

## Coating gelcoat, paint, glass and fiberglass caps

Painted surfaces are the straightforward case. Modern coatings bond well to cured urethane clear and behave predictably. The only caution is timing on a freshly refinished vehicle: clear continues releasing solvent for weeks after spray, and sealing it early traps that solvent and causes dieback. We wait out the cure window, which typically runs 60 to 90 days.

Gelcoat is more absorbent and more porous than paint, and it usually needs more correction beforehand. It also tends to consume more product. The payoff is larger though, because gelcoat oxidizes faster than clear does and a coating is the most effective thing available for slowing that down on a travel trailer or fifth wheel living outdoors.

Glass benefits enormously. A coated windshield sheds rain at speed and resists the hard water spotting that makes RV glass so difficult to keep clear. Fiberglass caps, which take the heaviest ultraviolet load on the vehicle, are arguably the highest value panel to coat. We also coat wheels and painted metal trim where it makes sense, and we mask off rubber, unpainted textured plastic and roof membrane, which coatings are not intended for.

## Coating, sealant or wax on a large vehicle

Carnauba wax looks warm and rich and lasts weeks. On a car that is a reasonable trade. On a 40 foot coach, waxing is a full day of work for protection that is gone before the season is. Very few RV owners keep up with it, which is why so many rigs are chalky by year eight.

Synthetic sealants last longer, several months in this climate, and they apply faster by machine. They are a sensible middle option for a vehicle that already has a healthy finish and an owner willing to reapply once or twice a year.

A ceramic coating is the one that actually fits the vehicle type. Applied once, properly prepped, it carries through multiple seasons and eliminates the reapplication problem entirely. The up front hours are real, because the correction underneath is real, but on a large vehicle it is the only protection strategy most owners will realistically maintain. ## Living with a coated vehicle

Wash technique matters more after coating, not less. Use two buckets, a clean microfiber mitt and a pH neutral soap. Skip automatic truck washes with brushes entirely, since the coating resists chemicals but does not resist a spinning brush loaded with grit off the last vehicle. Rinse from the top down and dry with a blower or clean microfiber towels rather than letting the vehicle air dry, especially with the hard water common through the San Gabriel Valley.

Do not apply wax over a coating. It does nothing useful and it dulls the hydrophobic behavior you paid for. If the coating starts feeling less slick after a couple of years, the correct move is a maintenance product designed for coated surfaces, or a decontamination wash and a topper coat.

Keep the coating away from the roof membrane. EPDM and TPO have their own chemistry and their own treatment products, and coating chemistry is not designed for them. We mask the roof edge accordingly. If your rig also needs roof work, sequence that before the coating so nobody is walking a freshly coated cap with a caulk gun.

### Can you coat my motorhome right after you repaint it?
