## Converting incandescent fixtures to LED

An older coach lit with incandescent bulbs is spending a remarkable amount of house battery capacity on light. Converting to LED cuts that draw dramatically, which matters most to owners who camp without shore power. It also cuts heat output, which in a small space in a Southern California summer is a genuine comfort improvement.

The straightforward conversion is a bulb swap in existing fixtures, and for many coaches that is all it takes. The details that matter are color temperature and beam pattern. A warm white in the 2700 to 3000 Kelvin range reads as comfortable living light. Cooler temperatures look clinical in a small space and make wood tones look gray. Beam pattern matters because many LED replacements throw light differently than the incandescent they replace, which can leave a fixture looking bright and the room looking dark.

Some fixtures do not convert well, particularly enclosed ceiling domes with a lens that diffused a point source, and older fixtures with dimmers designed for a resistive load. ## Why RV lights flicker, dim or quit

The fixture is usually not the problem. RV 12V systems run long wire runs at low voltage, and everything about that arrangement makes them sensitive to resistance. A ground connection that has corroded behind a panel, a crimp that has loosened from vibration, a wire that has chafed against a frame member: any of those produces symptoms that look like a bad light.

Dimming when another load starts is a classic voltage drop signature. If lights dim when the water pump or the furnace fan kicks on, the shared supply or ground path is carrying more resistance than it should, or the battery is not holding voltage under load. That is a circuit diagnosis, not a bulb replacement.

Flicker over rough road points to a mechanical connection problem: a loose terminal, a corroded socket or a wire nut that was never appropriate for a vehicle in the first place. Buzzing or strobing after an LED swap usually points to a dimmer that was designed for an incandescent load. We trace the circuit rather than guessing, which is why diagnostic time is billed as diagnostic time and credited against an authorized repair.

## 12V circuits, switches and what is behind the panel

Behind an RV wall panel is a bundle of 12V wiring that was routed at the factory quickly and, on many coaches, without much strain relief. Add fifteen years of vibration and heat and the connections that were adequate on the assembly line start to loosen. Adding a corroded ground into that picture is what produces most of the lighting complaints we see.

Repair means finding the actual fault. We trace the circuit from the distribution panel outward, check voltage under load at each junction rather than at rest, and locate where the drop occurs. Then the connection gets repaired properly: correct gauge wire, correct terminal, sealed where corrosion is a factor, and secured so vibration does not undo it again.

Switching is its own category. Rocker switches in RVs are commodity parts that fail with use, and a switch that has failed partially is a common cause of intermittent lighting. Dimmers add another variable, since many older dimmers cannot handle an LED load. When we convert a coach to LED we check the switching at the same time so you do not solve a lighting problem and inherit a flicker.

## Lighting design in a small space

Most RV factory lighting is one overhead fixture per zone, which produces a flat, shadowless light that makes the interior feel like an office. The single best improvement most owners can make is layering: keep the overhead for general light, then add task lighting where you actually do things and accent lighting to give the space depth.

Task lighting means under cabinet strips over the galley counter, reading lights at the bed and at seating positions, and a directional fixture over a dinette or a work surface. Under cabinet lighting in particular changes how a galley functions, because the overhead fixture is always behind you and your own body is casting the shadow you are trying to work in.

Accent lighting means toe kick strips, cove lighting above a valance, and low level pathway lighting for moving around at night without turning the coach into daylight. Dimming on the main zones is worth doing where the switching supports it. All of this is straightforward while an interior is open during a remodel, and entirely doable as a standalone job as well.

Outside fixtures live a harder life than interior ones. Porch lights, awning light strips, compartment lights and step lights all sit in weather and take direct sun, and they are the fixtures most likely to fail from corrosion. Sealed LED units are a large improvement over the original incandescent fixtures on older coaches, both for draw and for service life.

Compartment lighting is one of those upgrades owners rarely think about and immediately appreciate. Basement bays on most coaches are unlit or lit by a single dim fixture, and adding LED strips with a door activated switch turns a bay you have to explore with a flashlight into one you can actually use after dark.

Every exterior fixture is also a hole in the vehicle. When we replace or add one, the penetration gets sealed correctly with the appropriate material for the location, and the wiring gets a drip loop and strain relief so water does not track along the conductor into the wall. Fixtures installed without that discipline are a leak that starts working immediately and shows up as an interior stain a year later.
