# Subframe Repair in West Covina

Subframe repair covers the secondary structure that carries a body, box, service body or conversion on a commercial chassis. Cracked subframe rails, sheared U bolts, failed mounting plates and corroded crossmembers are repaired or replaced in shop, with the body brought back into position before it is re secured.

## What a subframe does and why it fails

On a commercial chassis, the body almost never bolts straight to the frame rails. Between them sits a subframe: a secondary structure of longitudinal rails and crossmembers that spreads the body load along the chassis and lets the frame flex without tearing the body apart. Box trucks, flatbeds, service bodies, bus conversions and most van and truck based mobile builds all rely on one.

Subframes fail for predictable reasons. Overloading, especially with the weight concentrated near the rear overhang, is the most common. Point loading from equipment installed without spreading the load through a crossmember is second. Corrosion is third, and it does its work invisibly inside boxed members and under wood bearers where moisture sits against steel for years.

The failure mode is usually cracking rather than bending. A crack starts at a stress riser, often a weld toe or a fastener hole, and grows a little further every time the truck is loaded. By the time it is visible from underneath it has usually run a significant distance. That is why a subframe inspection is worth doing as part of any body repair on a commercial vehicle rather than waiting for a symptom.

## Cracks, U bolts and mounting plates

Attachment hardware tells the story. U bolts that have stretched, mounting plates that have elongated their holes and spring loaded body mounts that have taken a set are all evidence the body has been moving. Retorquing them without addressing the reason is a temporary measure at best. The correct repair identifies why the load exceeded the design and adds capacity there.

Crack repair follows the same discipline as any structural weld. The crack is drilled at each end to stop propagation, ground out completely to sound metal through the full thickness, prepared with the correct joint geometry, and welded with the process matched to the base material. Simply running a bead over the top of a crack traps the flaw underneath and it will reappear.

Reinforcement is frequently part of the answer. Where a design has proven inadequate, a properly sized doubler or a new crossmember distributes the load away from the failure point. Reinforcement plates are shaped with tapered ends rather than square cuts, because a square ended plate creates a new stress riser exactly where the old one was relieved.

## Repositioning a shifted body

A box that has moved rearward on the chassis is a common arrival. It shows up as a gap behind the cab that was not there, a rear frame overhang that looks longer than it should, and doors that have stopped aligning. The body is not damaged. It has slid, which means the mounts failed before the structure did.

Correcting it requires releasing the mounts, securing the body, and drawing it back into position against measured references from the cab and the rear axle centerline. This is straightforward work that goes badly when it is rushed, because a body drawn back into position under uneven load will bind and end up slightly twisted. Measurement at multiple stations while the body is being repositioned prevents that.

Once position is verified, the mounting system gets rebuilt rather than reused. New U bolts, new hardware, replacement mounting plates where holes elongated, and additional crossmembers where load concentration caused the original failure. Then the body is loaded and rechecked, because a mounting system that holds an empty truck straight is not necessarily one that holds a loaded truck straight.

## Corrosion, wood bearers and dissimilar metals

Many older box and service bodies use wood bearers between the subframe and the body floor. Wood is quiet, forgiving and cheap, and it holds water against steel indefinitely. When bearers rot, the body settles unevenly and the fasteners through them lose clamp load. Replacing rotted bearers is often the actual repair on a truck that came in complaining about a shifting body.

Aluminum bodies on steel chassis raise a different problem. Direct contact between the two in the presence of moisture drives galvanic corrosion, and it eats the aluminum. Correct practice is to isolate the two with a barrier at every contact point and use fasteners that do not create their own cell. On repairs we restore that isolation even where the original build skipped it.

Coating the repair is as important as the repair. Bare and welded steel gets cleaned, primed and coated. Boxed sections get a cavity treatment where access allows. Given how much of a subframe is hidden under a body and never looked at, protecting it properly at the one time it is exposed is the highest value part of the job.

### Why did my box truck body shift back on the frame?

Almost always because the mounting system gave up before the structure did. Stretched U bolts, elongated mounting plate holes and rotted wood bearers all let the body creep under braking and acceleration loads. Once it starts, each hard stop moves it a little further. The fix is to reposition the body against measured references, rebuild the mounting system with new hardware, and add capacity where the original design was marginal.

It depends on access. Where the repair area can be reached from underneath, a crack repair with reinforcement can be a few days. Where the body has to come off or be lifted to reach the members, plan on one to three weeks. Corrosion driven jobs run longer because the extent is rarely visible until the area is opened up and cleaned back to sound metal.
