# Structural Damage Assessment in West Covina

A structural damage assessment measures and documents what a collision, a leak or years of load actually did to a vehicle. You get a written report with measurement sets, photographs and a repair recommendation you can take to a carrier, a seller or a second opinion, produced at our Yorba Linda facility.

**Ballpark range.** $285 to $1,800. Ranges are planning figures, not a quote. Final numbers come from a written estimate on your vehicle.

## What an assessment actually produces

An assessment is a document, not a repair. It contains a measurement set covering length from fixed reference points, width at multiple stations, diagonals to detect twist, opening diagonals for every door, window, compartment and slide, and the floor plane checked against level. Each figure is recorded with the location it was taken from so anyone can repeat it.

Alongside the numbers is a photograph set. Every finding is shot in place with a reference for scale before anything is moved or cleaned. Where an area had to be opened to see it, there are images of the area before and after opening. Where a previous repair is present, there are images of that repair and the reasons it is or is not holding.

The final section is a recommendation with a sequence. It states what has to be corrected, in what order, and what depends on what. It does not commit you to having the work done here. Owners routinely take these reports to a carrier, to a second shop or to a seller, and that is a legitimate use of the document.

## When an assessment is the right first step

The clearest case is a disputed claim. When an adjuster and an owner disagree about whether damage is structural, a measurement set settles it faster than any amount of argument. Numbers taken from published reference points and compared to specification or to the undamaged side are objective, and carriers respond to them.

The second case is a repair that will not stay repaired. A seam that has been sealed three times, a crack that keeps returning to the same cabinet joint, a slide that has been adjusted repeatedly and still will not seal. Those are symptoms of a geometry problem, and no amount of additional sealant or adjustment addresses the cause. The assessment finds where the movement is coming from.

The third case is a purchase. Used RV pricing rarely accounts for structural history, and a unit with a repaired frame can look excellent and drive poorly. An assessment before purchase costs a fraction of what a structural correction costs and gives you either confidence or leverage. It is worth the drive down from West Covina before money changes hands.

- Disputed claims where the extent of structural damage is contested
- Repairs that have failed repeatedly in the same location
- Pre purchase evaluation of a used coach, trailer or conversion
- Post repair verification after work was done somewhere else
- Unexplained fit problems on doors, slides and compartments
- Documentation for a diminished value or supplement discussion

## How the measurement work is done

The vehicle goes on level ground and the suspension is allowed to settle before anything is recorded, because a coach measured on a slope produces numbers nobody can use. Reference points are chosen from published specification where one exists, and from verified undamaged structure where it does not. Every measurement is taken twice from independent setups so a transcription error does not become a finding.

Opening diagonals are where most structural problems reveal themselves, so every opening on the vehicle is measured rather than only the ones near the visible damage. A rear corner hit that shows up as a front slide opening out of square is a specific and useful finding, and it only appears if the whole vehicle was measured.

Where a finding requires seeing behind something, we say so and quote the access work separately rather than including a guess. Some assessments end with a recommendation for limited teardown to confirm a suspected condition. That is an honest answer and it is more useful than a confident statement about something nobody has actually looked at.

Underside inspection runs alongside the measuring. Frame rails, crossmembers, outriggers, body mounts, spring hangers and welds are examined with good light for cracks, fresh coating over one area only, weld beads that do not match the factory pattern and fastener holes that have elongated. Those observations are recorded whether or not they relate to the reason the vehicle came in, because a structural report that only covers the area of complaint is not much of a report.

## Reading the report and what to do with it

The report is written to be read by three audiences: you, an adjuster and another shop. That means plain language for the findings, specific figures for the technical reader, and a repair sequence that another facility could follow if you choose to have the work done closer to home.

If you are taking it to a carrier, the sections that matter are the measurement comparison and the photograph set. Adjusters approve what they can see and verify. A statement that a frame is bent carries little weight. A measurement showing a station out of specification with a photograph of the affected member carries a great deal.

If you are taking it to a seller, the useful section is the repair recommendation with the sequence. It converts a vague concern about a used unit into a specific scope, which is the basis for either a price adjustment or a decision to walk. Either outcome beats discovering the same information after the purchase.

## Assessment fees and how they are handled

Structural assessment is billed as diagnostic and documentation time rather than as an inspection package, and it is credited against an authorized repair if you have the work done here. Diagnostic time runs one hour minimum at the posted diagnostic rate. Collision estimates, by contrast, are written at the shop as part of the normal claim process.

Plan on the vehicle being here for most of a day on anything larger than a travel trailer. Measurement on a 40 foot coach with multiple slides is not a quick walk around, and doing it properly is the entire point. Drop off and pickup during posted hours works better than waiting, since the report is written after the measurements are complete.

The assessment happens at the Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile service, and there is no version of this done in a storage lot, because the measurement work requires level ground, lighting and access underneath. For West Covina owners the drive is about 22 miles, and most take the 60 to the 57 south and across on the 91.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is included in an RV structural damage assessment report?

A full measurement set covering length, width at several stations, diagonals for twist, opening diagonals on every door, window, compartment and slide, and the floor plane against level. Alongside that is a photograph set of every finding shot in place with scale references, notes on any previous repairs and whether they are holding, and a written repair recommendation with the sequence the work would need to follow.

### Can I use your assessment to dispute my insurance company's estimate?

Yes, and owners do. The report is written so an adjuster can verify the findings independently: measurements are tied to identified reference points and every conclusion has a photograph behind it. Carriers respond to documentation far better than to disagreement. Whether the carrier changes its position is up to the carrier, but the report gives you something objective to present rather than an opinion.

### Should I get a structural assessment before buying a used motorhome?

It is worth it on any unit where the price is meaningful or where anything about the fit looks off. Structural history rarely shows in a listing and often does not show on a walk through. Measuring opening diagonals and the floor plane catches racking and twist that a visual inspection misses completely. The cost is a small fraction of a structural correction, and the result is either confidence or negotiating leverage.

### How long does a structural assessment take?

Plan on most of a day for the vehicle on anything larger than a travel trailer. Measuring a 40 foot coach with multiple slide openings takes several hours of careful work, and the report is written afterward rather than on the spot. Drop off during posted hours and collect the vehicle with the report ready. Smaller trailers and vans can often be turned in a few hours.
