# Delamination Repair in West Covina

Delamination repair opens a sidewall, roof or slide face where the skin has lost its bond, removes wet or crushed core, replaces failed substrate and re bonds the panel under clamping or vacuum. It also finds and fixes the leak that caused it, since a rebonded wall over an active leak fails again.

## Finding the true extent of a delaminated area

The visible bubble is not the repair area. Bond failure spreads outward from the point of intrusion, and the skin only lifts visibly where enough air or vapor has collected to push it. Mapping the actual boundary means tapping across the panel in a grid and listening for the change from a solid tone to a hollow one, then marking the transition directly on the vehicle.

Moisture readings supplement the tapping. A meter run across the marked area and beyond it shows where water is still present, which is not always the same as where the bond has failed. A dry delaminated area means the leak has stopped or the water found another path out. A wet area outside the delaminated boundary means the failure is still spreading and the repair boundary needs to move.

The mapping is photographed with the marks in place, because the estimate has to explain why a repair area is five feet across when the visible damage is the size of a dinner plate. Owners deserve to see the reasoning, and carriers approve documented boundaries far more readily than assertions.

## Finding and fixing the leak first

Rebonding a wall without correcting the intrusion is throwing the work away. Water gets in at a limited number of places: window frames, awning rails, slide flanges, marker and clearance lights, the roof to wall seam, compartment door frames and any fastener that penetrates the skin. Each one is inspected, and the suspect areas are water tested with the interior open so entry can be observed rather than guessed.

The most common culprit on a sidewall is the awning rail, because it runs horizontally for the length of the coach and every fastener is a potential path. The second is the roof to wall seam where the lap sealant has shrunk and pulled. The third is a slide flange, particularly on the top edge where the topper dumps water directly onto it.

Correction means removing the component, cleaning the mating surface completely back to sound substrate, and resetting it with the correct sealant for the materials involved. Butyl tape behind a flange, a self leveling product on horizontal roof seams, and a non sag sealant on vertical surfaces each have their place. Running one product everywhere is how the original leak usually started.

## Injection repair versus opening the wall

Injection is a real technique with a narrow application. Adhesive is introduced through small holes into a delaminated void and the panel is clamped or pressed until it cures. It works where the core is sound and dry, the void is modest, and the skin has not deformed permanently. On those jobs it is faster, less invasive and produces a good result.

It does not work where the core is wet, where luan substrate has turned to pulp, or where the skin has taken a permanent shape from months of bulging. Injecting adhesive into wet pulp bonds nothing. Pressing a permanently deformed skin flat produces a panel that looks correct until the clamps come off. Shops that sell injection as a universal answer are selling a repair that will fail, and we will tell you when your panel is not a candidate.

Opening the wall is the durable answer for anything beyond that narrow case. The skin is cut back to sound bond, the core is removed and replaced with matching material, the framing behind it is inspected and repaired, and a new skin section is bonded with structural adhesive under clamping or vacuum. The joint is planned to fall where it can be hidden, then faired and refinished.

## Core, substrate and what goes back in

What replaces the failed core matters. Walls originally built with luan can be rebuilt with azdel or a comparable composite substrate, which does not absorb water and does not turn to pulp the next time something leaks. That is an upgrade over the original construction and it is usually worth the small difference in material cost given the labor already invested in opening the wall.

Foam core sections are replaced with matching density material so the panel keeps its designed stiffness. Using a softer foam because it is on hand produces a wall that feels different when you press it and that flexes more under load, which puts stress back into the bond line. The whole point of the repair is a panel that behaves like the rest of the wall.

Framing is inspected while it is exposed and this is often where the surprises are. Aluminum studs corrode where wet luan has been packed against them for years, and wood framing on older units rots outright. Both get repaired or replaced during this stage, since there is no reasonable way to reach them once the skin is back on.

## Slide faces, roofs and the places delamination hides

Slide out faces delaminate more often than sidewalls in proportion to their area, because they sit under a topper that concentrates water at the top edge and because they flex every time the room moves. A bowed slide face is also a sealing problem, since a face that is no longer flat will not seal against the wiper and bulb seals, which admits more water and accelerates the failure.

Fiberglass roofs are the second hidden location. Unlike EPDM and TPO membranes, a one piece fiberglass roof looks intact from below while the laminate under it has separated. The tell is a soft area underfoot, which owners often discover while cleaning the roof or servicing an air conditioner. That discovery deserves prompt attention because a soft roof will not support a person safely.

The third is the floor edge and the lower sidewall, where water that entered anywhere above eventually collects. A wall that is delaminated at the bottom two feet across a long span often means the intrusion was somewhere entirely different and gravity did the rest. This is why the leak search covers the whole vehicle rather than only the area around the visible damage.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can RV delamination be fixed by injecting adhesive?

Only in the narrow case where the core is sound and dry, the void is modest and the skin has not taken a permanent shape. Under those conditions injection with proper clamping works well. Where the core is wet, where luan has turned to pulp or where the skin has bulged for months, injection bonds adhesive to material that has no strength and the repair fails. We tap and moisture test the panel before recommending either approach.

### How do I know how far my delamination has spread?

By tapping the panel in a grid and listening for the change from a solid tone to a hollow one, then marking that boundary on the vehicle. A moisture meter run across and beyond the marked area shows whether water is still present outside it. The failed area is almost always considerably larger than the visible bubble, which is why the marked boundary gets photographed as part of the estimate.

### Will delamination keep getting worse if I leave it?

Yes, as long as the leak that caused it remains open. Water travels along the failed bond line, and every heat cycle drives vapor into the void and pushes the skin further from the core. A panel that is a hand sized soft spot one summer is commonly a several foot area two summers later. Correcting the leak stops the progression even if you are not ready to rebuild the panel yet.

### Should I replace luan with azdel when the wall is opened?

In most cases yes. Luan is thin plywood and it absorbs water, swells and turns to pulp the next time anything leaks. Azdel and comparable composite substrates do not. Since the overwhelming majority of the cost is the labor to open and rebond the wall, upgrading the substrate while it is open is a small addition that meaningfully improves how the panel handles a future leak.

### Is a soft spot in a fiberglass RV roof safe to walk on?

No. A soft area means the laminate has separated and the roof has lost the stiffness that lets it carry a person. Walking on it risks both further damage and a fall. Keep off that area, keep the roof covered or sealed against further intrusion, and get it evaluated. Roof delamination also tends to be more extensive than it appears from above, since the failure spreads under an intact looking surface.
