# Crack, Hole and Impact Repair in West Covina

Impact repair covers punctures, gouges, broken corners and cracked panels on campers, trailers and composite bodies. The damage is opened to sound material, backed and rebuilt with glass and resin, then faired and refinished. This is the repair for a specific point of contact rather than a general failure.

## Assessing point damage before touching it

Impact damage looks self explanatory and rarely is. The first question is whether the impact went all the way through, because a puncture and a deep gouge get repaired differently. The second is whether the panel behind the impact point is delaminated, since force applied to a laminated panel often breaks the bond over a larger area than the visible break.

The third question is what is behind the panel. A puncture near a stud is a different job from a puncture in a bay between studs, and a hole through a slide face may have damaged the interior finish, insulation or a wiring run on the other side. We look behind before quoting, which sometimes means removing an interior panel or opening a compartment.

The last consideration is water. A hole that has been open through a rainy stretch has been feeding water into the wall, and the repair scope may be larger than the hole because of what the water did. Moisture readings around the opening answer this quickly, and finding it during the estimate is far better than finding it after the panel has been closed.

## Rebuilding a puncture in a composite panel

A through hole gets prepared as a tapered scarf, the same as any structural laminate repair, then backed so there is something to laminate against. Where the reverse side is accessible, the backing is glass laid from behind, which is the strongest option and gives a clean face on both sides. Where it is not, a temporary backer is inserted through the opening and bonded in place, then removed or left as part of the repair depending on the material.

Layers of glass and resin build the laminate back to original thickness with each layer overlapping further onto the taper. On a thin sidewall skin the build is shallow and the taper is wide. On a molded body the build is thicker and the taper proportionally shorter. Either way the repair carries load through bonded area, not through the plug of material filling the hole.

Core replacement is part of the job on a sandwich panel. Crushed foam or wet substrate around the puncture is removed and replaced with matching material before the skin is closed, because a skin bonded over crushed core is a skin with nothing supporting it. Skipping that step produces a repair that is flat on the day it leaves and dished six months later.

## Broken corners, edges and radii

Corners fail more than flat areas because they concentrate stress and because they are what hits things. A broken corner on a molded cap usually shows fracture in two directions at once, plus a section that has separated entirely. Rebuilding it requires re establishing the shape, which means either mold work from the undamaged mirror side or building the contour by hand and refining it during fairing.

Where a matching corner exists on the other side of the vehicle, taking a mold from it is the accurate approach. A splash mold off the good corner produces a part with the right radius and character line, which hand shaping rarely matches on a complex corner. It takes longer up front and eliminates the fairing rework that a hand built corner usually needs.

Edges and flanges are the other repeat offender. Compartment door openings, the lower edge of a cap and slide opening flanges all get chipped and cracked, and all of them are structural because they carry seals and fasteners. Repairing an edge means rebuilding the full section including any flange, then re drilling fastener locations rather than reusing holes that have already failed.

## Star cracks and what they tell you

Cracking that radiates outward in a star from a single point is a pure impact signature. The panel took a concentrated load, the gelcoat and often the laminate failed in tension around the point, and the cracks stopped where the energy ran out. Star cracks are repairable, and the important part is grinding every leg of the crack out completely rather than only the ones that are easy to see.

Cracks that appear in a star but keep growing after the impact mean something else. Either the impact damaged the structure behind the panel, or the mounting point at that location is loose and the panel is flexing. Repairing the surface without addressing that will give you the same star pattern again. Ladder mounts, spare tire carriers and awning arm brackets are the usual sources.

One common trap is the crack that looks like a star and is actually a stress crack from an existing structural problem. Those tend to have one leg noticeably longer than the others, running toward the structural feature that is moving. Following that longer leg back usually finds the actual issue, which may be a loose body mount, a failed adhesive joint or a cracked framing member.

## Finishing point repairs so they do not stand out

A small repair on a large panel is the hardest finishing problem there is, because there is nothing nearby to hide the edge of the work. The finish has to be planned before the repair starts. On a panel with a graphics band, a body line or a seam within reasonable distance, the clear stops there. On a blank surface it has to run to the panel edge, and that is a longer refinish than owners expect from a small hole.

Gelcoat repairs on point damage can often be spot finished successfully, because gelcoat is sanded and buffed rather than sprayed. The repair is tinted, applied, cut flat and polished into the surrounding surface. Success depends on how oxidized the surrounding gelcoat is, since a fresh repair next to chalked gelcoat reads as a bright spot even when the color is correct.

Either way, we tell you what area will be refinished before work starts. The most common complaint about small repairs done elsewhere is not the repair itself. It is that the owner expected a spot and got a panel, or expected a panel and got a visible patch. Setting that expectation at the estimate avoids both.

### Can a hole in a travel trailer wall be repaired or does the panel need replacing?

Most holes can be repaired properly. The opening is tapered back to sound material, backed so there is something to laminate against, rebuilt in layers, and any crushed or wet core around it is replaced. Panel replacement takes over when the surrounding bond has failed over a wide area, when the hole is large relative to the panel, or when the wall was already delaminated before the impact.

### How do you fix a broken corner on a fiberglass RV cap?

By re establishing the shape as well as the strength. Where an undamaged mirror image corner exists on the other side of the vehicle, taking a mold from it produces a part with the correct radius and character line. Where it does not, the contour is built by hand and refined during fairing. Either way the laminate is rebuilt to full thickness with a tapered bond into sound material around the break.

### Why do the cracks around my ladder mount keep spreading?

Because the mount is concentrating load into a small area of panel that was not designed for it, and often because the mount has loosened. Repairing the cracking alone leaves the cause in place. The durable fix rebuilds the laminate and adds a backing plate or a laminate build up behind the mount so the load spreads across a wider area, then reinstalls the mount with fresh hardware and sealant.

### Will a small fiberglass repair need the whole panel repainted?

It depends on what is nearby. If there is a graphics band, a body line or a seam within reasonable distance, the finish can be stopped there and the repair area stays small. On a large blank sidewall with no break, the refinish has to run to the panel edge to avoid a visible halo. On gelcoat finishes, spot repair and buffing is often possible instead.
